I’ve been in a couple of biking accidents over the years, and lucky for me, I always wear a helmet, no matter what the temperature. However, I can see that having a bulky helmet around can get annoying, especially if you use your bike to go everywhere. The Overade folding bicycle helmet is designed take up a lot less space, so you won’t have any excuse to leave your helmet behind.

This folding helmet was created by Patrick Jouffret of the French design studio Agency 360. The helmet is supposed to offer the same amount of protection as a normal helmet, but it can fold up so it’s easily transportable when it’s not on your head. The folded size is small enough to fit in a backpack, purse or bag, which is cool.

Overade was first prototyped in 2010, but it’s supposed to finally go into production in 2012.

These folding shoes are pretty clever. Perfect for those who like to go barefoot, but not all of the time. Or for anyone who carries spare shoes with them. And think of the space that you’ll save in your suitcase or backpack when you travel with these.

Normally an extra pair of shoes will take up a lot of room, but since these babies fold and zip up, it’s no big deal. This is the future of shoes people.

Just fold the two halves of the Radler Trail Camp shoe together, and pull the zipper. That’s it. Now you have a compact pair of shoes that store easily. They come in your choice of red or black for $65(USD) from Timberland (the orange ones are on sale for $50 now.)

As long as they are comfortable, these are a great design and well worth the price.

For mobile music, I usually use earbuds. However, it took a while before I found a pair that would stay in my ears properly. It’s become easier with changeable buds, allowing any earbud to adapt to the shape of your ear. Of course, you won’t have to worry about these headphones falling out of your ears. The Urbanista Copenhagen folding headphones are a mid-size, over-the-ear with an unusual square shape.

The Copenhagen headphones come in a variety of different colors and are produced by Stockholm-based design shop Urbanista. There is also an integrated microphone along the cord, and two joints allow them to easily fold up for transport. You’ll have to judge if they are worth the added weight and volume, as they are quite a bit larger than earbuds. If you’d rather stick with earbuds, Urbanista also makes some squared off ones of those too, called London.

Each pair of Copenhagens is made from steel components, and offers frequency response from 20-20,000Hz, and a better than average sensitivity rating of 118 dB±3 dB SPL @ 1 KHz.

The Copenhagen headphones come in a variety of different colors and sell for $99(USD) at Urbanista’s online store.

Finding the normal PS3 controller a little too rigid for your liking? Maybe you want something that has a bit of a bend to it. Something that combines the bending properties of binoculars with Sony’s controller.

Well, instead of modding that favorite pair of binoculars and slapping on two halves of a DualShock, just buy this cheap looking controller. It even gives you some extra buttons in the center, though what they are for we have no clue. After playing Call Of Duty with this thing for about a week you’ll be ready for the wonderful world of hand cramping and arthritis that is sure to follow.

I looked around and I’m not sure where you would buy it (at your own risk), however you can get it wholesale here for $21.00 (USD) if you buy 1-5 controllers, or here for about $13, or lower in quantity.

While it may not be the first time I’ve seen a computer made from LEGO bricks, if you are going to make one, it would be nice to know that it was being put to good use.

This LEGO computer not only looks cool and runs fast, it’s being used as a folding farm to help with medical research.

Mike Schropp built this awesome beast of a machine using about 2000 individual LEGO bricks, but it’s what’s on the inside that’s equally as impressive. Under the hood of this machine are a trio of overclocked quad-core Sandy Bridge 2600k CPUs, mounted into ASUS P8P67 Micro ATX mobos, and chilled by Thermaltake Frio CPU coolers.

So basically, what you’re looking at here are three complete computers in a single box. In addition to the CPU coolers, it’s got 8 Aerocool fans to keep the temp under control. Amazingly, the whole 12 core system runs on a single Antec 1200 high current power supply. It’s really an impressive rig, even if it weren’t made from LEGO bricks.

While it’s primarily used for the medical research, Mike admits that he also uses the computers inside for use in his own home as well.

To read more about the build and to see more pictures showing how Mike’s LEGO folding farm PC came together, head over to Total Geekdom.

A team of scientists at MIT Cambridge have developed a prototype of a “programmable matter” which can automatically change its shape when electrical impulses are applied to it.

A demonstration of the technology was put together using a sheet of the material, which automatically folds itself into various shapes. This “self-folding origami” is made from a custom fabricated material with triangular sections moved thin-foil actuators and magnets embedded into the flexible surface. The prototype sheet has 32 tiles, and can fold itself into the shape of a boat and a paper airplane as you can see in this video clip:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The programmable matter could someday lead to materials that could take on multiple forms, such as a plate that could turn into a bowl or a cup. One more ambitious use could be to create robots that automatically change form to adapt to their environment. They’ve got a long way to go before they’ve got a T-1000 on their hands, but it’s still pretty cool stuff, even if they just get it to make some origami unicorns for now.

I have an iPad and an iPhone, and I really have no issues using the onscreen keyboard for most tasks. However, if I am doing something like an email or surfing the web where I will be typing a lot, a keyboard would be appreciated. Now, a company called Cervantes Mobile has announced a new portable keyboard that will work with both Apple and Android devices called the Jorno.

The Jorno is a small portable keyboard that folds and connects to devices using Bluetooth. It ships with a small dock that will hold your device in portrait or landscape mode while you work. This might be the perfect thing for iPad users who work on documents frequently. Keep in mind that the keys on the keyboard are 15% smaller than normal keys.

That means they are almost full size and should be on par with netbook keyboards, so you still won’t be able to type as fast as you do on a full-size keyboard. When folded the thing is about the size of a deck of cards.

The keyboard isn’t set to launch until early 2011, but you can pre-order one now for $79 (USD) – and you should, since once it launches the price will go up to $99.

iPhone haters really like to rag on the fact that the phone has no actually keys, only virtual ones. This somewhat impractical, but clever add-on aims to fix that shortcoming.

By taking a small wireless Bluetooth keyboard, and crafting a hinged mount for it, modder Pachimon managed to do what we once thought was impossible – give the iPhone actual keys!

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

To pull this off, he used a TE-382 BT Bluetooth keyboard and crafted hinges from simple transparent Scotch tape.

If you want to put one together for yourself, you might have a hard time finding that keyboard outside of China or Japan. But according to my calculations, Brando’s Mini “Plam-Size” Bluetooth Keyboard is virtually the same height as an iPhone 4 (114mm vs. 115mm), so you should be able to do the same with one of those.

Sure, it’s completely unreasonable to expect that you’d cram that fat iPhone into your pocket – and hinges made out of cheap tape on a fragile glass gadget scare the bejeezus out of us, but it still achieves its primary purpose, no?

Customizing arcade-style gear has become quite the popular hobby lately, with arcade tables and personalized fighting sticks springing up all over. But sometimes these projects go a step beyond the normal, as with this folding table with an inset arcade controller.

Want to sit down while you play? No problem. Don’t want to hold your stick? Check. Need something stable that can also fit into a very small space? All that and more, all for the price of cutting and fitting everything together in your home workshop. Unfortunately, my home workshop only exists in my imagination, so I am left ogling other people’s creations.

At least that means I don’t have to deal with the sawdust. But clean-up is probably easier when you know a sweet gaming experience is waiting for you. Sawdust is temporary; fighting sticks are forever.

Here’s a unique keyboard for the musician who’s got to take their instrument everywhere they go. The Infinite Response Vax 77 is designed to fold in half so it can fit in the overhead compartment on airplanes.

Once folded in two, the keyboard measures in at just 23.3″ (w) x 14.5″ (l), which should fall below the FAA regulation carry-on size, assuming it’s less than about 7-inches thick when it’s in its carrying bag. The Vax 77 weighs in at about 25 pounds, which should make it a bit easier to haul around than other keyboards, which usually weigh around twice as much.

The keyboard features 76 weighted keys and can control any MIDI or USB connected synthesizer module. The keyboard can pass all kinds of detailed data about key presses to a sound module including pressure, attack and release velocity. It even offers what’s considered a holy grail in electronic keyboards, polyphonic aftertouch.

Once released, each Vax 77 will be custom made to order, and buyers can choose from several colors as well as the weighting of your keys. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but the makers of the keyboard hope to keep the price in reach for working musicians, whatever that means.

If they figure out how to fold up a baby grand piano, I’ll buy one.
