We’ve seen boxes that transform into cabinets or beds or drinks coolers when opened. Now here’s another one that transforms into something cushier: a chair.

This chair-in-a-box is part of d-vision‘s new collection. You can basically use it as a side table when the foldable cushion is still inside the box.

When you want to sit on it, just open the top, fold the thin cushion out, and take a seat. It’s that easy.

The fold-out cushion looks a bit thin from the images, so don’t expect it to be the most comfortable chair in the world. But I really dig the fact that it’s multi-purpose and can be used as more than just a chair.

What do you think?

No place in the world is safe from earthquakes. They’re one of the most terrifying natural calamities because you can’t help but feel so small and insignificant when the ground begins to shake – and just doesn’t seem to stop.

What you need to do during earthquakes is simple: drop, take cover, and hold on. There’s a risk in the second step because you might find yourself crushed to death if the thing that you’re crouching under isn’t very strong or sturdy. That’s where this table designed by Arthur Brutter and Ido Bruno from Jerusalem’s Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design comes in.

The earthquake-ready desk will be featured in the 2012 Design Bonanza Bezalel exhibition in Milan from April 17 to April 22, and has been nominated for London Design Museum’s design of the year award. It’s more than just a concept design, though. The table is currently licensed by school furniture manufacturer A.D. Meraz Industries Ltd. for distribution in Israel.

The table has been engineered to withstand the impact of objects that weigh up to 1,000 kgs (or 1 ton) from a drop of eight to ten feet. Under ordinary tables, you would probably be crushed along with everything else on top of you. It’s about 2.5 times as expensive as current school desks, but there’s no amount of money in the world that can out-value a human life, don’t you think?

This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen a convertible piece of furniture (remember the Land Peel?) Anyway, designer Matali Crasset’s “Sweet Talk and Dream” is more straightforward and conventional, though.

It looks like an extra-thick folding bed, with two huge differences: it has two small foldable areas instead of the usual one that folding beds have, and it’s also got a round slot in the middle where the table is supposed to go in.

Fold the two ends up, and the whole thing transforms into something that resembles a booth at a restaurant. Fold them back down, and you’ve got a bed.

It’s fun to see furniture designs like these that give you a whole lot of options, even if the space that you’ve got is limited.

You never have enough drawers in your desk do you? Or enough surface area for that matter. Whatever desk you have, you are stuck with using it the way it is. The bamboo PixelTable by Studio Intussen is different. This table can be redesigned again and again to suit your needs.

Need an extra surface? Just pull some pixel beams out. Need to put a book in a drawer? Push a few beams in. Not in use? No problem. It all pushes back into the 18″ cube. It’s simple and clever design. Sure it’s basically a pile of sticks, but that’s what makes it so neat.

The only drawback I can see is that you need extra room on either side as you are pushing and pulling the beams, but if you have the room this would be an awesome piece of furniture to display.

VHS tapes might have gone the way of the dinosaur, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fond memories of the dominant video format before the rise DVD, Blu-ray and streaming. Kick back, relax, and remember the days when you had to rewind your movies and keep them away from magnets with this awesome handmade VHS tape coffee table.

While it’s not made out of actual VHS tapes, this stack of three giant wooden VHS tapes is way cooler than that. The limited-edition VHS tape coffee table from Amsterdam’s T76, and is handcrafted from teak wood in Indonesia.

The table features intricately carved details from VHS cassettes, including those windows that let you see through to the reels, and handwritten titles on the labels. Since each cassette seems to have multiple titles, and the write-protect tabs haven’t been punched out, I can only imagine these are bootlegged copies of these classic movies. Quick, call the MPAA!

The VHS coffee table measures appx. 49″ (W) x 25.5″(D) x 16″ (H), and weighs just under 80 pounds, shipped. It sells for $1980 (USD), plus shipping, and can be ordered from t76 by emailing them at order[at]t76design.com.

I don’t really get what pipe cleaners are for. I mean, I know that they’re for cleaning stuff from smoking pipes, but most people I know just use them to organize wires and bunch other stuff together. For some reason, I was instantly reminded of pipe cleaners when I first saw the Pressed Chair.

These chairs are made from pressed aluminum that initially ships flat. What you’re supposed to do is fold them out and bend the projections into various positions so you can end up with a chair. The Pressed Chair redefines ease of portability because, really, where’s the difficulty in transporting flat furniture?

The man behind the Pressed Chair design is Harry Thaler, who definitely pushed the boundaries of minimization and material with this unusual seat.

Attention, electronic musicians! Have I got a piece of furniture for you. What you’re looking at here is the MiniWoouf Sofa, designed to look just like the classic analog MiniMoog synth.

The MiniWoouf sofa was designed by Barcelona, Spain design shop Woouf!, and is a dead ringer for the original synthesizer, complete with all of its knobs for adjusting its sound waveforms. Of course, the sofa doesn’t actually play any notes when you sit on it – which I think is a good thing. I think that would get really annoying, really quickly.

I’m not sure how much the MiniWoouf sofa sells for, but if you head on over to the Woouf! website, you can get in touch with them and you’ll also find a variety of other cool music-themed furniture, including amp an boombox stools, and synthesizer benches and foam pillows.

As a classic video game buff, I always thought about buying myself some Tetris bookshelves for my office. But now that I’ve seen this, I might go with a Pac-Man theme instead.

Yep, what you’re witnessing before your very eyes is a Pac-Man ghost bookshelf, perfect for holding onto books, but even better for video game boxes, in my humble opinion. The shelf is made by Barcelona artist LightYourselfUp, and it’s just the right addition for a retro gamer’s home or office.

The shelf measures about 30″(H) x 28″(W) x 4″ (D), and can be customized in other colors, and even which direction the ghost’s eyeballs are looking. Me, I’d love to have a set of four, one each of Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde hanging on my wall. They sell for €250 (~$342 USD) each though, so it’s not exactly an inexpensive proposition to build a larger-than-life Pac-Man game on my wall.

Stardate 5928.5, we had a pool party for Spock’s birthday today, and what do you know, my chair floats. I don’t think we will ever hear Kirk or Picard utter that sentence in the Captain’s log. But if you’re a small adult or have a child that likes science fiction, ThinkGeek has something you’ll definitely want to buy.

For $24.99 (USD), you can get your own inflatable Star Trek captain’s chair. The chair is decorated to look just like the one Kirk used on the bridge as he boldly went around the universe in the original series. The chair measures 27.75″(H) x 29.25″(W) x 18″(D), and will hold a maximum weight of 120 pounds, so normal-sized adults can’t really sit on it – at least not more than once. I wonder if the chair would float upright if you used it as a pool toy.

This would be the perfect chair for your little Star Trek geek while you watch reruns together. Personally, I would rather see an inflatable recreation of Jean-Luc Picard’s chair, but that’s just me.

You start out with two different pieces: the metal screw head (which serves as the stand), and the solid cork stool (which serves as the seat.)

Put 2 and 2 together in your head and you probably already know what to do in order to form your very own SCRW stool. How high or how low the stool ends up is up to you, since it all depends on the number of times you turn the cork around.

It’s no secret that I have this insane and inane fear of insects. Cockroaches, grasshoppers, crickets, preying mantis, you name it, and I’ll scream when I see it. This is all to the annoyance of my dad, who just swats at it or sweeps it out of the way when he sees one. So you’d probably understand my sheer refusal to sit on one of these Mantis Chairs, if ever I come across one.

I probably wouldn’t care if I had been standing the whole day or if my legs were cramping; I’d rather remain standing than sit in the arms (or legs?) of a gigantic, albeit wooden, preying mantis. This unique pest of a chair was designed by the folks over at Wildetect, who took inspiration from the African wilderness.

The chair doesn’t look comfortable at all, although I do have to admit that it looks pretty fine – if you’re into bugs. I can only imagine the reaction of other insectophobes like me when they walk into a dimly lit room and see the shadow of a gigantic mantis right there in the middle. I assure you, it won’t be a pretty sight (or sound.)

I first heard of Manolo Blahnik and Manhattans from the hit show Sex and the City. In fact, one of the reasons why I’m so into shoes (but not so much into alcohol) is because of that show, which I love but which my bank account hates.

Manhattans were also one of the first cocktails I ever tasted, alongside Cosmopolitans and Martinis. I prefer non-alcoholic drinks these days for many reasons, but Manhattans will also have a special place in my heart. And now you can even cordon off a small area in your home for them, too, in the form of these clever Manhattan Stools.

These Manhattan Stools are great for use in both indoor and outdoor locations. The most obvious location to place them are near the bar, of course. These chairs feature a steel structure with a polyurethane seat, and were designed by Itamar Harari for Italy’s B-Line.

You might want to drop B-Line an email if you want pricing and purchase information for these stools.

This bookcase concept was designed by Roberto Corazza. It’s a sight to behold, isn’t it? It obviously draws inspiration from trees, showcasing their beauty amidst their imperfection. The shelves aren’t straight, so it’s not a very space-maximizing bookcase. The cubbies are also sized oddly, so some of your books might fit while others might not.

Based on the images, I’d say the Tree Bookcase would only be made possible if it were wall-mounted, because there’s no way that tiny base would make the entire thing stable enough to hold a number of books at the top.

Or maybe it could work, if Robert didn’t mean for it to be stocked up with books in its entirety.

I’m not a huge fan of sardines. Sure, I find myself craving some once in a while, but they’re not my most favorite fish in the world. But sardines seem like it’s the fish of choice for furniture designer Tristan Cochrane. This rocking chair is a one-off piece sculpted by Tristan. It is fully functional and made entirely from sardines cast in aluminium.

What Tristan did was create a wax mold from actual sardines, which he then used that to cast aluminum versions of the fishes. It was produced in Eindhoven, NL, at Beeldenstorm foundry in 2011.

The story behind Tristan’s career is pretty interesting: he worked for over ten years in the fishing industry before studying cabinet making and furniture design at Bucks University near London. His resume certainly explains how he ended up making such a chair.

Aside from being extremely unique, this sardine rocking chair is also expensive: its asking price is $19,500(USD). You can contact Saatchi Online, which represents Tristan, if you’re interested in sitting on some fish.

True story: I was hard at work studying for my exams when I decided to take a quick breather to stretch my arms and my legs. What happened next was far from what a breather is supposed to be: I made my chair lose its balance (there’s no other way to put it), my chair toppled over, and I ended up embarrassed (and slightly hurt) on the floor.

I got back on my chair and continued studying as my sister roared with laughter (after checking to make sure I was okay, of course.) Since then, I’ve always stood when I needed to stretch and have been a lot more mindful of my sitting position after that.

One chair that you can sit on and feel completely at ease, though, is the Osca Task Chair. It was especially designed for people who move around a lot, even when they’re seated.

The secret to the stability of the chair is in its flexible rocking base, which allows for a range of movement without fear of toppling over. The actual seat of the chair has also been designed ergonomically to make sitting in it comfortable while not skipping out on the aesthetics.

The chair would easily snap together using a wooden seat and flexible base, and even would allow you to change its upholstery simply by snapping new modules on – held in place by strong rare-earth magnets.

The Osca Task Chair is a concept design by Jessica Cassar that I’d really like to see get commercially made.

I tried lying down on the concrete road once for a school project, and let me just say that my back was sore for close to a week afterwards. Obviously concrete isn’t made for comfort; it’s made to be strong and hard and long-lasting so we don’t end up with horribly cracked roads and structures.

With the exception of these Concrete Cushions by Torafu Architects, that is. These cushions are part of the design studio’s “Soft Block” series that offers a solution for modular, re-arrangable furniture.

Each of the faux concrete blocks feature varying and diverse designs that come together wonderfully when they’re stacked or placed side-by-side. Make a chair, put together a sofa, or lay everything down flat on the floor to come up with a mattress.

The cushions are extra cushy and comfortable since they use cushy, but supportive Fine Revo foam material by Asleep.

Now I’d lie down any day on this kind of concrete.

I’m sure you’ve sat on your fair share of park benches and wished that they were made to be whole lot kinder on your behind than they currently are.

Probably picking up on this cue, Tembolat Gugkaev designed the Softa Outdoor Bench that’s not exactly a bench and not exactly a sofa. You can see that it basically looks like a sofa but it won’t feel like one. That’s because it’s made from fiberglass and carbon(fiber?) so it’s water, heat, cold, and bump resistant.

On Softa, Gugkaev says that he knows “the world will be ruled by beauty and harmony” someday, so why not add an artistic element to our street benches?

I doubt it’s a very practical design given how much space it takes up and how much material is needed to make it, but it’s a fun and comfy looking design nonetheless. What do you think?

I was staring outside my window, being bored and all kinds of lazy, when I noticed a soon-to-be-mama bird in the middle of building her nest. There was just something about how carefully she aligned the bits of leaves and twigs that got me thinking about what it might feel like to sleep in one. (Weird thoughts, I know, but yes, I was that bored.)

Apparently, I don’t have to wonder too much anymore because someone out there just made a giant-sized nest bed that’s lined with all sorts of comfortable and cushy materials. This obviously doesn’t feel like a real bird’s nest would, but I’d pick this version any day.

These giant bird’s nest beds were made by the O*GE Creative Group as a prototype for a new and inspiring socializing space. I think they succeeded in doing just that with this project. You might take a nap instead of socializing from the way these look, though.

You’re in luck if you want to get one for yourself, because O*GE is producing them on demand in three different sizes. You can check out their site for more details and contact information.
