futurama fans get invaders! possibly from space!

Remember the classic episode of Futurama where Fry has to save the planet from “Invaders! Possibly from Space?” Pretty soon, you’ll be able to take down those aliens while listening to your own all-Rush mix tape while chugging a 2-liter bottle of Shasta too.

Retro game maker/Futurama fan Shinobi is putting the finishing touches on a playable homage to the hysterical scene that features aliens from the planet Nintendoo 64, ready to bear down on Earth with all three of their different kinds of ships. The game is still a work-in-progress, but Shinobi has been kind enough to post a brief video clip of the game play.

There’s no word yet on when you’ll be able to download the game, but it’ll be available over on Shinobi’s Place in the not too distant future (hopfully, we won’t be waiting until the 31st century). In the mean time, sit back and enjoy the original clip from Futurama, courtesy of Comedy Central.

lego reindeer-bot brings creepy to christmas

While no one can fault the crafstmanship or creativity of this Lego Reinbot, there’s just something about him that’s a little lacking in joviality. He’s got sinister style in spades, though, and while I like him, I’m pretty sure he thinks I’ve been naughty.

Maybe it’s the giant red nose, or the lack of soft, welcoming lines, but this particular reindeer looks like he hauls Futurama’s terrifying Robot Santa around. That’s no fun at all.

But maybe it’s just that they’re both Christmas-y robots. Regardless of my personal fear of holiday robots, Lego master Sir Nadroj–who has many other custom Lego minifigs on display at his Flickr site–put together a fantastic metallic(ish) critter for the holidays, and even though Christmas has passed, we’ve got enough leftover spirit lying around to appreciate the effort.

Call me a dork, but Futurama has always been one of my favorite programs on the old idiot box – at least when it comes to animated programs. Now, just in time for the holidays, I’ve found the perfect decoration for my office.

Inspired by the classic Futurama Christmas episode, A Tale of Two Santas, the set includes 6-inch tall bendy desktop versions of Santa Bender and (the bloodthirsty) Robot Santa for you to pose into a variety of compromising positions.

Robot Santa and Santa Bender were actually released by Toynami as a limited edition release of just 2000 at the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con, but you can still find them over on Amazon for $54.99 for the set.

My only question is, where is Robot Santa’s tommy gun?

For those of you who are fans of Matt Groening’s classic animated show, Futurama, here’s a computer casemod was just dying to be done.

Modeled after everyone’s favorite acerbic, beer-swilling, foul-mouthed robot, Bender, this is one fine piece of casemodding work. From his slot-loading DVD/CD mouth, to his light up eyeballs, to his computer-gut innards, to his functional WiFi antenna, this mod truly a work of art. The system is a fully (dys)functional miniITX based PC. It took the team over 4 months to build it, but under 2400 Norwegian Kronor (under $370 USD) in materials to build. And no, they don’t plan on mass producing them.

It turns out that the gruff, gun-toting protagonist of hit Xbox 360 game, Gears of War is actually voiced by the same guy responsible for the voice of Bender from TV’s Futurama.

Actor John Di Maggio, is responsible for voicing the two incredibly different fictitious characters. About the only thing in common between the two are the propensity for four-letter words and their metal costumes.

I haven’t been this shocked by an actor’s range since I realized a single actor played the roles of Cameron Diaz’s mentally challenged brother in There’s Something About Mary, brutal killler Dan Dority on HBO’s Deadwood and famous rock singer, Meat Loaf. I guess that’s why they call it acting.
