Earlier this year we featured modder Jonathan Berg aka Dremel Junkie’s Wall-E casemod. Now he’s back with a 20-inch iMac G4 with touchscreen capabilities and *gasp* a bag of hurt a Blu-Ray drive.

Berg encountered a couple of problems while modding the G4, the first being the proprietary connector that the iMac monitor uses to connect to its controller. He remedied it by installing a shelf on the back for the new connectors. He then installed a surface acoustic wave touchscreen, saying, “its high resolution does not distort the image at all.”

The second problem was the lack of real estate in the base of the iMac: “I initially wanted to make it a Core 2 Duo all in one. Unfortunately, there is a lot less space in there than you think. Its very impressive how Apple constructed it. because it was convection cooled, the parts literally stacked on top of each other. They fit together like a puzzle. The disk drive alone probably takes up 70% of the volume in the base.” He states the solution to this problem more vaguely though: “I decided to keep the computer separate.” But if it’s proof you need, don’t worry, Berg’s got it all on camera:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Although we all know that a conventionally oriented desktop touchscreen monitor would be a pain to use for more than a few minutes, I think Berg still deserves a round of applause. And major plus points for the Blu-ray drive. But wait!

He had some leftover parts and decided to use them to build a “big touch screen remote equipped with Windows 7 Media Center and a convenient blu-ray player hooked up to my HD TV.” This time he used a 17-inch HP monitor and painted the whole thing black. The touch screen is resistive, which according to him is less sensitive and operates at a lower resolution, but that’s okay Mr. Berg. You turned a white iMac G4 into a black touchscreen Windows Media Center remote control. If that’s not modding then I don’t know what is.

Now in all my research of the old Apple PowerMac G4, I can’t find anything in the spec sheets that mention a 49cc, 2-stroke petrol engine. I must have missed that part somewhere. As a matter of fact, this is the first Mac I’ve ever seen that measures its speed in MPH, not MHz.

This ridiculous mod combines an old G4 with the guts of a tiny motorbike. The MOTO G4 “BURAN” can hit a top speed around 30+ miles per hour. It’s got front and rear disk brakes, and a windscreen made from a hacked up original Apple Pro keyboard.

Apparently the Buran is just the first vehicle created for the new MOTO G4 “extreme sport”, which involves turning old G3 and G4 cases into high-speed deathmobiles.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t figure out a way to keep the computer functional. I think it would have been cool if they figured out a way to do that, and mounted an LCD monitor into the handlebars. Maybe they can do that for the MOTO G4 2.0.

God, that seat looks uncomfortable.

Even though we already have e-mail, I think it will still take some time before we abandon snail mails. In the mean time, why don’t we give our plain old mailboxes a (fake) hardware upgrade? Here are a couple of ideas to get you started. I know we can do a lot better, because these are some ugly-ass prototypes.

This is the appropriately named Computer Mailbox , from Morgan Home Accents:

This 13″ x 12″ x 28″ case is not really the mailbox itself; the metal mailbox is accessible via the door on the monitor screen. Made of “heavy duty pine”, the computer mailbox is has lots of room for printing or sticking stuff on it, so you can put your business logo or your dog’s face or your family crest on it. You can order your very own Computer Mailbox at Morgan Home Accent’s online store for $230 plus shipping. These fake PCs are expensive.

But what of Apple loyalists? They need ugly mailboxes too. I don’t know if anyone’s selling iMailboxes, but someone with initiative and an old G4 case went and made one for herself/himself:

As of now computer mailboxes come form an opposite universe, where Apple-branded ones are infinitely cheaper than other computer mailboxes. Sure, they’re both ugly, but at least the other person didn’t pay for his ugly G4 mailbox.

So get your creative juices flowing and build your own computer mailbox. You never know, maybe you’ll be the next Etsy superstar. If there is such a title.

Got an old Macintosh or Mac Plus lying around? There’s got to be something better to do with it than turn it into an aquarium, right? That’s what this enterprising modder did when he managed to cram the guts of a Mac G4 Cube into his trusty old Mac Plus, replacing the old B&W CRT with a modern color LCD monitor, as well as the ability to run Mac OS X.

Mac modder Charles Mangin really did an amazing job seamlessly integrating Macs from both the 20th and 21st centuries. At first glance, the machine looks like a stock Mac Plus, but look closer and you’ll see all the detail work that Charles did, like adding a hidden Superdrive (from an iMac G5), a pair of USB ports underneath, as well as a third one tucked away behind a sliding door inside the floppy drive slot.

Thanks to improvements in miniaturization, all of the newer technology fit neatly inside the old case, leaving plenty of room to spare.

He even went so far as to swap out the innards of an old Mac ADB mouse with a modern optical USB one.

The Frankenstein’s monster of a machine is nicknamed “Marvin” after the paranoid robot Marvin from The Hitchikers’ Guide to the Galaxy. If you want to see more of how Marvin came to be, check out photos of entire build over on Charles’ Flickr album. (The mouse mod is documented separately here).

Now all we need is to figure out a way to cram this whole thing inside a Commodore PET, and we’ll be all set.
