If you’re a fan of classic Nintendo video game systems, then you’ll definitely want to check out these comfy looking plush cushions done up to look like these bits of gaming nostalgia.

Artist Lucy Sparrow of Felt Sew Good makes several cushions based on old Nintendo systems. For starters, theres a shiny Famicom controller, which looks like it would make a nice pillow behind your neck during long gaming sessions.

There’s also a Game Boy cushion as well as a Super Nintendo console along with a matching controller. What I love about these is that they’re not just tiny pillows – each one is quite substantial.

While those are all awesome, my favorite has to be the one based on the all-time classic controller from the original Nintendo Entertainment System.

Each cushion sells for £37 (~$59 USD) plus £7.50 (~$12 USD) for shipping to the U.S., and can be ordered over at Felt Sew Good’s online shop, where you can also find Lucy’s cool ZX Spectrum and Speak and Spell cushions. Cat ears not included.

Today’s handheld videogame systems all have built-in clocks, but if you want to see the time on a Game Boy the closest you can get is the Watch Boy, an official Nintendo merchandise released back in the 90s. The design of the watch is unabashedly childish, which is why it’s awesome.

Despite the fact that it’s a wristwatch, I think the time-telling function of the Watch Boy is just a bonus. You’ll look at it not to figure out the present but to remember the past.

The Watch Boy is no longer in production, adding to its appeal to collectors and gamers alike. It’s not surprising then that a seller on eBay is asking for at least $100 (USD) for his Watch Boy, and the price will keep going up until the auction ends on May 19th. That’s a ridiculous price for a plastic and rubber wristwatch, but I say it’s worth it.

Texas Instruments calls it the TI-Nspire cx CAS, but we might as well call it a Game Boy Color, because the calculator can be hacked to run an emulator for Nintendo’s console. Do a quick Google search and you’ll see that other TI-Nspire models can be installed with Game Boy and NES emulators as well. Just to rub it in your old Casio’s monochromatic face, here’s how you spell “boobs” on this calculator:

I can’t remember the last time I played a portable gaming console, probably a Game Boy Advance SP, but the LEGO Game Boy Transformer sure makes me want to play Tetris again on the go.

This LEGO Game Boy build has all of the right influences, from LEGO bricks, to Transformers when they were still in cartoon format, and naturally that good old green-screened Game Boy that I played until the screen broke.

The Domaster, short for Dot Matrix with Stereo Sound, was created by LEGO maniac Julius von Brunk. It’s mostly made out of LEGO bricks with some custom decals and a Tetris cartridge that transforms into a bird (dubbed the Tetrawing).

It only takes 2 AA batteries contrary to the Game Boy’s 4, but it still looks pretty amazing.

Thanks to Kickstarter, we’ve become accustomed to constantly seeing fundraisers for new technology and promising gadgets. But a fundraiser at gaming forum Assembler is for an old, unfinished and possibly horrible piece of software: two copies of the Game Boy Color version of Resident Evil. The original hasn’t aged well and that was released on the PlayStation, so… brace yourself.

That’s a good question Barry. The Resident Evil Wiki says that Capcom decided not to release this port because of poor quality. Then late last year an Assembler forum member named kiff claimed to be in contact with someone who has two cartridges containing unfinished builds of the canned game. That someone will be kind enough to upload the contents of said carts online for public <del></del> consumption, but not kind enough to do it for free. The person is asking for $2,000 (USD), hence the fundraiser. Here’s some gameplay footage of the port, uploaded back in 2007 by YouTuber Dot50Cal.

Jill looks like a monster herself. If that wasn’t horrifying enough, remember that these are unfinished copies we’re talking about. They have significant glitches and missing content, such as non-functioning enemies and weapons. Kiff also said of one of the builds, “I am not 100% if any of the endings work.” And yet as of this writing kiff has raised nearly $1,500 with almost a month to go, so there’s a good chance that these builds will be released.

Then again the donors to the fundraiser are probably less excited about playing the game than the thought of virtually digging up a relic from a bygone generation. Head to Assembler if you’d like to donate as well. I wonder what the original developers think about this.

A while back, I told you guys about a pretty cool iPad 2 case which was made out of good old duct tape. At the time, the case was only a one-off, but you can now get in on the duct tape action yourself. The case’s creator, Coregeek has recently launched a Kickstarter project to get these fun and functional cases into the market for you to enjoy.

Each Duct Tape Magnetic Jacket incorporates a durable, lightweight plywood core, wrapped in ample layers of duct tape. The inside of each case is lined in felt to protect your precious tablet, and the case even self-aligns like the Smart Cover, thanks to its built-in magnets, and even auto-wakes and sleeps. It also can be propped up for easy typing or movie watching.

Unlike the original grey design, the updated iPad 2 duct tape case comes in a variety of cool designs, including such favorites as the Nintendo Game Boy, Doctor Who’s TARDIS, and my personal favorite, delicious smoky bacon (bacon scent not included.)

A pledge of $40(USD) or more will get you one of these Duct Tape Magnetic Jackets in one of serveral basic colors, while $45 buys you patterns like leopard, zebra, or digital camo. But if you really want to travel in style, drop 60 bucks and go for the Game Boy, TARDIS or bacon versions. If you’re feeling like really splurging, Coregeek says he’ll make you a custom design (within reason) for $80.

There is something about a girl that embraces her inner geek and revels in it. It’s all the better when that geeky gal also happens to be cute. Check out this fun project that comes from a girl named MaDonna, who satisfies all of the above criteria.

These are fingerless gloves, or what I would call gauntlets. They are crocheted out of yarn and look like a couple of Nintendo Game Boys. I bet that these would keep your geeky mitts nice and toasty with the winter coming up. I think they are pretty cool, not that I would wear them. I don’t embrace my inner geek quite that much.

If you want to knit a pair for yourself, you will have to use your imagination though, MaDonna doesn’t offer up a pattern for the gloves. If you can pull these off with no pattern let us know. All we know is that to make them, she used Paton’s Classic Wool in Natural Marl, Lion’s Brand Jiffy in Citron, and Red Heart Super Saver in Black, Red, and soft white.

As we already know, Minecraft is an amazing tool for building intricate worlds and other fun digital playthings. The latest creation… Minecraft Tetris. But not just any old Tetris, this is the classic greyscale Nintendo Game Boy version many of us grew up with.

The guys at MinecraftA2Z built this Tetris level using the Minecraft engine, but they did cheat a little bit. That’s because the video below was put together using stop-motion animation, and it’s not actually a playable level.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Still, it’s pretty impressive and worth checking out if you have a minute. Plus, I can never get enough of that original Tetris theme… Especially this version…

After their C-3PO and R2-D2 swimsuits, Black Milk has is showing off this Nintendo Game Boy swimsuit, for all you retro gaming fans. It also joins the ranks of the Pac-Man swimsuit that we saw last month.

I have to say that the Artoo swimsuit was one of my favorites. The Game Boy swimsuit is also cool, especially if you loved playing your original Game Boy for hours and hours. Thanks to the design of the original Game Boy, the swimsuit has strategically placed Start and Select buttons which should make juvenile guys laugh the way Beavis and Butthead would.

Sadly though, due to copyright issues, none of these swimsuits is available anymore at the Black Milk Clothing shop. They have other fanciful designs, but you’ll have to find these ones somewhere else.

If you’re one of the millions of gamers who have fond memories with the Game Boy, then you’ll love Sergio Ingravalle’s book, Pixel Galaxy. It’s a tribute to Nintendo’s Hall of Famer handheld and to pixel graphics in general.

Despite its chunky form and monochrome display, up until today the Game Boy remains the third best selling video game system of all time, topped only by the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation 2. Part of it’s success was because the competition sucked, but more than anything the Game Boy was successful because it had a legendary line up of games, from Tetris to Pokémon. Judging from the shots of the book’s contents, Sergio seems to be well aware of that.

Pixel Galaxy singles out and takes a closer look at some of the Gameboy’s most popular games like Link’s Awakening, Castlevania and Street Fighter II. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he focused on the different kinds of art styles used in the games rather than their gameplay. Not that that would be disappointing. For gamers like me who grew up in the mid-80′s until the early 90′s, 8-bit graphics will always have a special place in our hearts.

Hopefully he’ll thank us by coming up with an English – and Japanese! – translation of the book.

Each one is sewn from a jersey knit fabric, in colors everyone will identify with the Nintendo Game Boy. They come with some felt A/B buttons, as well as some ones for Start and Select, all placed in potentially inappropriate locations for pushing, unless you’re very intimate with its wearer.

While this particular Nintendo dress just sold yesterday, you can be sure that Etsy shop HereandThereVintage will continue to offer some pretty cool clothing for all geekettes. She’s got other versions of the same dress, which look just as cool.

I wasn’t aware that there are enthusiasts that love making miniature arcade cabinets. And they don’t just make beautiful cases, like the ones we’ve featured before, their machines are actually functional. One of the newer ones is this Space Invaders cabinet made by YouTuber vcoleiro1.

The cabinet is a mere 7″ tall, 3.5″ wide and 4.5″ deep. Inside it are the guts of a GBA SP. Vcoleiro1 used resources from Arcade Art Library and Vectorlib to create the cute cabinet art. Surprisingly enough – at least for me – the joystick and the buttons actually pre-made; vcoleiro1 bought them from Digikey and eBay respectively.

Does that classify as a portable handheld? Feel free to email Vcoleiro1 at vcoleiro1[at]gmail.com if you want the full instructions or if you want him to make you one. Hopefully his asking price will be as small as the cabinet.

There are a lot of cases floating around town for your much-coveted tablet from Apple. There are iPad 2 cases that look like visions of art like the Wasabi Wooden cases, while there are those that look more typical but have a bit more functionality like the PaletteCase.

The iPWN! iPad 2 case definitely belongs in the former classification.

Take one look at the case and you’ll be able to see right away what makes this one so special. The first ever video game console that my mom got for me and my sister (yes, we had to share) was the Game Boy with the transparent case. So the iPWN! case doesn’t really look like the console that I had over a decade ago, but seeing the original version of it still brings back fond memories (and some not-so-fond ones, like when my sister and I would fight over who had possession of it for the night.)

iPWN! has made similar Game Boy-themed cases for the iPhone 3G/3GS ($14.99) and the iPhone 4 ($16.99). The iPad 2 case will be open for pre-order soon, so as expected, the pricing and exact release date haven’t been announced yet.

The pack contains a total of 30 highly detailed icons. deleket made them a couple of years ago though, so there are no icons of more recent tech like the DS or the Move.

You can preview all of the icons here. If you like what you see, go ahead and download the icons on deleket’s deviantART page.
To make the cases more convincing, they still have all their buttons and have fake title screens and cut-off cartridges. What’s funny though is that one of the cases was made out of one of those transparent Game Boys, rendering the ruse useless.

Even though it was obviously not it’s primary function, the oscilloscope is considered to be one of the first video game systems. Flashing LEDs pays tribute to that appropriately geeky root of gaming with this clever hack. By using a microcontroller to… you know what, honestly I don’t know what the hell he did, but here’s the end result:

I wanted to say that this is like the circle of video games clicking close, one end meeting the other, but then I realized the Game Boy isn’t exactly the latest video game system. Still, to go from a bouncing dot to this is sufficient enough to serve as both a functional metaphor of how far our beloved pastime has come and as a tribute to its humble beginnings. Although I’m sure one of the billion modders out there has already figured out a way to control an oscilloscope using Kinect.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I’m not even a Zelda fan – happy 25th anniversary btw! – but that soundtrack is such a familiar sound of my childhood that I get goosebumps whenever I hear that. I hope you can hear me clapping from my side of the globe, Flashing LEDs. Check out his website for details on how he pulled off this wizardry.

Retro gamers, here’s a fun way to wrap up an iPhone 4. It’s an iPhone case that looks like an old Game Boy.

The guys at iLounge spotted this awesome Game Boy case over at the Incipio booth during CES last week. I’ve seen Game Boy vinyl decals and slip cases for the iPhone before, but I really like how this case has been embossed actual raised buttons and speaker details from the original handheld gaming system. As you can see from the pictures below, it certainly does nothing to protect the front of your iPhone from finger smudges. Yeesh, you might with to wipe your phone down before your photograph it, guys.

So the bad news is that Incipio doesn’t plan on producing these. They only made this one to show off their production prowess, and are worried about the lawyers from Nintendo shooting them down. Frankly, I think they should cut the Big-N in on the profits, and maybe they’d let ‘em make these. I have a feeling they’d sell at least a few of them. For now, you’ll just have to admire the Game Boy iPhone from afar.

Maybe this video clip will help set us straight on what the purpose of this thing is:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Nope, now I’m even more confused. Wait, it’s not even an actual iPhone? It’s a case from a cheap iPhone knock-off that’s had its innards replaced with some LEDs. Huh, wha?

The whole thing sorta reminds me of the time the Flight of the Conchords made a camera phone by duct-taping an old camera to a cellphone. Anyone want to take a stab as to what the deal is with this mutant?

I don’t know about you guys, but I think Goteking’s Dreamcast/iPod Nano mashup was much more sane.

Since this is a decal, you won’t be bulking up your iPhone. And if you happen to have jailbroken your iPhone, there’s a Game Boy emulator out there, so you’ll be able to play classic games while making your iPhone looks nice and retro at the same time.

Best of all, this decal isn’t expensive. It will set you back just $6 (USD) at the Short Sleeve Alliance. There are currently 10 in stock, so act fast or they’ll be gone!

In fact, it still plays – as you can see from the game of Tetris on screen. Hopefully, the troop who owned the miraculous handheld made it out without any harm. This unique bit of Nintendo history is on display over at New York’s Nintendo World if you ever want to see it up close and personal.
