One reason why handheld video game consoles were (and are) so popular is because they’re extremely portable. Most of them can be folded up or kept in cases and then stowed away in a purse or backpack, ready to be taken out for another round of gaming when the opportunity arises.

But if you happen to have really fat fingers and are a pretty huge person overall, then you might appreciate having a larger of the gaming console. Pictured above is the wall-mounted gaming portable(?), although its case , which looks and plays just one of those old Game & Watch handheld video games.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I mean, if we’ve got giant iPhones (although limited in functionality) and giant bathing ladies, then why not a giant Game & Watch?

The giant Nintendo Game & Watch was made by Tobie Nortje for the reception area of 21tanks. It was built using a computer monitor embedded in the oversize case, while the buttons are connected to an Arduino control board. Signals are sent back and forth from the controls to a PC, allowing users to play games from the classic platform, in this case, powered by PicaPic.

Depending on how old you are, Pica Pic is either a virtual museum or a time machine. Made by Hipopotam Studios, Pica Pic lets you play with a growing number of handheld games that were popular back in the 80s to early 90s. The thing that makes Pica Pic special is that the images as well as the LCD screen look exactly like the real deal.

Selecting a device to play will make it zoom in and take up almost the whole page. The first time I clicked on one of the games and it zoomed in was a magical moment for me.

Even if I didn’t get to play most of them when I was a kid – I didn’t even know most of these games existed before I saw them – everything from the design of their cases to the simple gameplay and graphics is just so familiar. If you grew up playing Game & Watch games or any of these handheld games, you owe it to yourself to visit Pica Pic.

You can play any of the games for free, and there’s even a list of people who got the highest scores for each game, but for some people just looking at these games is entertaining enough. I sincerely hope this site doesn’t get taken down by the companies who own the games.

Remember those old Nintendo Game & Watch LCD games from back in the 1980s? Well if you’re a fan of these classic precursors to modern handheld games, you’ll be happy to hear they’re back! Only this time, they’re much, much smaller.

Thanks to a partnership between TakaraTomy A.R.T.S. and Nintendo, we’re now getting these Game & Watch minis. Each game is a faithful miniature reproduction of its original version. Unfortunately, they’re not actually playable (boo!), but they do offer the authentic LCD animations from the originals. As an added bonus, the mini Game & Watch titles have a built in solar panel, so you never have to worry about batteries.

At this point, the titles available are Parachute, Octopus and Chef, so if you’re looking for Donkey Kong of Mario Bros. you’re outta luck for now. And despite the fact that they’re not actually playable, they’ll still look pretty cool hanging from your keychain. Here’s a little video showing them off in action:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

They ship this April, and you can pre-order them all now over at Strapya World for just $11 (USD) each. What do you think the valet will think when I hand over my car keys with one of these hanging from them?

If you grew up in the 1980s, you probably remember Nintendo’s Game & Watch LCD games. These primitive portable games were the great-grandparents of the Game Boy, GBA, and DS, and now they’re back for you to enjoy once again.

These Nintendo mini classic games have gotten a modern makeover, with all of the electronics fitting neatly into a keychain-sized gadget.

Each one hearkens back to a classic Game & Watch title. There’s Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., and Mario’s Cement Factory, among others. All of them feature the same rudimentary LCD animations found on their ancestors, along with simplistic color overlays.

Each of the Nintendo Mini Classics is available over at Firebox for £9.99 (appx. $16 USD). But if you’re willing to dig around a bit over on Amazon, you can find some of these for as little as $2.99!

Remember the old Nintendo Game & Watch LCD games from back in the 1980s? These early handheld video games have always had a bit of a cult following, despite their primitive, repetitive graphics, and drab monochromatic screens with cheesy color overlays. And while there are certainly some rare ones out there that are worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars, here’s an idea of what to do if you’ve got one of the less popular ones lying around your basement somewhere.

Modder Goteking recently turned an old Donkey Kong Jr. Game & Watch into a tiny color TV. And while the buttons no longer work properly, it’s a whole lot more fun to watch weird Japanese game shows than to watch choppy grey LCD version of an arcade game, IMHO.

To get this hack working, Goteking gutted the old G&W, and glued a cheap $40 LCD TV to the back. Not a particularly complex operation from the looks of things.

There wasn’t any room to keep the TV’s front-mounted speakers in place, so sound is provided by a gigantic external speaker that’s about 3 times the size of the Game & Watch & TV itself. It’s all very MacGyver of him. I guess the good thing about that is that this is one of those rare mods that even I could probably replicate.

The ancestor of portable gaming systems is Nintendo’s Game & Watch series. And if we’re going to believe its Wikipedia entry, the “spiritual” ancestor of Game & Watch games is an LCD calculator. Portable gaming sure has come a long way since the ancient 1980s, but there are some things from its past that have yet to make their way to the present. Take for example the Micro Vs. series of Game & Watch games. It’s a portable game that allows for 2-player head-to-head on the same system via two tiny controllers. Interested? Then checkout eBay seller chickeneater‘s Donkey Kong Hockey Micro Vs. Game & Watch.

Look at that bizarre, two-tentacled electronic creature. What’s weirder is that chickeneater’s copy of the game is brand new, and has only been opened once to have its picture taken. Clearly, chickeneater’s house has a door to the 1980s, because if you check out his store you’ll find all sorts of relics and (non)living video game fossils from the 80s, all of them in mint condition. Wanna know something even weirder? As it turns out, you can play a hockey game using only one button! Screw you EA and your complex control mechanisms!

The Donkey Kong Hockey Micro Vs. Game & Watch sells for $85 USD (plus shipping) on eBay. It includes packing foam, original plastic bag, caution notice, instructional book and one of Robert Smith’s lipsticks. I was kidding with the last one. Robert Smith has used the same lipstick since 1975.
