Infectious is like Threadless for your gadgets – the designs are submitted by users, so you’re bound to find something that suits your tastes. Here are a bunch of retro laptop, iPod and iPhone skins currently available at Infectious:

The awesome cassette tape player skin is called Retro Stuff is Better, designed by Tony Aguero. Michael Sison calls his Gameboy skin Monochrome. Both have iPod Classic and iPod Touch versions. The iPod Classic version of the Monochrome covers the scroll wheel with a large d-pad. Sweet.

And that’s the appropriately named VHS Heroes skin by Hollis Brown Thornton. I think it looks way better as a laptop skin, but it’s also available as an iPod Touch, Nano and Classic skin. All iPod and iPhone skins sell for $15 (USD), while laptop skins sell for $30. Head on over to Infectious for more designs. The shop also has instructions on applying the skins, but you can also check out Testfreaks’ review of Infectious iPhone skins for a tutorial, complete with photos.

Written by Brendan Fletcher (aka “calc84maniac”), TI-Boy SE is a Game Boy emulator that runs on TI’s Z-80 based graphing calculators thanks to similarities between the CPUs of the two systems. The emulator includes three zoom modes, two sprite tracking modes, grayscale or black-and-white palettes, two-channel sound and even can save and load games. Right now it only supports a handful of games, including Tetris, Zelda – Link’s Awakening and Kirby along with homebrew games. Emulation speed is a bit choppy, but what do you expect for an Alpha 0.0.2 version number. I’m sure that TI-Boy will only get better and faster with time.

Here’s a video of an early build of TI-Boy SE running Link’s Awakening in all its greyscale glory…

If you’ve got a TI-8x calculator, head on over to GameboyDev and grab the installer. There’s plenty of good discussion going on over on the Omnimaga forums too.

This jack of all trades media player not only cranks out the requisite music, videos and pictures, it’ll also play your favorite retro video games.

In addition to playing a wide variety of audio and video formats on its 320×240 LCD screen, the GAME-800 PMP has a software emulator on board that lets it play NES, Famicom, GameBoy, GameBoy Color and Sega Mega Drive games. And when you’re not playing games, there’s a text-to-speech eBook reader that can read any TXT file out loud in either Chinese or English. There’s also a handy digital camera built in, although the specs don’t say anything about the resolution – so I wouldn’t expect much in terms of photo quality.

The GAME-800 comes with 4GB of onboard storage, and can be expanded up to 8GB total using an optional SD memory card. Now I’m not sure that I’m in love with the design of this thing – it sorta looks like what might have happened if your iPhone was made out of plastic, then got squashed in a table vise, and coated in day glo paint. It’s also lacking a real gamepad, so control is limited to using four ergonomically-unfriendly buttons to control directional movements.

Still, if you’re looking for a cheap media player with a full color screen, and want to play your retro games (and know what rocks to dig under to find game ROMs), it’s not a bad deal for just $80 smackeroonies over at ChinaGrabber.

The cardboard Game Boy shell is a little janky, but the wearer deserves mad props for the fully-functional Game Boy emulator, running Tetris on a laptop screen. You can see it in action in the video clip below:

I do find it a little creepy that you have to press the buttons on the guys’ waistline in order to move the blocks around. It looks like he’s having just a little too much fun with people manipulating his joypad and pressing his buttons.

Sure, you can pick up a used Gameboy for about $20 bucks over on eBay these days, but why buy one when you could build one for yourself?

Matt over at Liquidware decided to build an “open source Gameboy” (known as the Gamepack) using off-the-shelf parts, including the modder-friendly Arduino microprocessor. While the Arduino may provide the brains of the operation, the 128×128 TouchShield Stealth color OLED touchscreen is most definitely the soul. Rounding out the build is an Inputshield board, which provides a tiny joystick (complete with rumble) and control buttons as well as a flat Lithium battery pack.

The Gamepack system is now available in kit form so you can build one for yourself. At this point, the Gamepack only runs some rudimentary homebrew demo code, but the hope is that others who grab the kit will contribute more advanced games, or maybe even a Nintendo emulator.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

At $249 for the Gamepack kit, you could buy more than 10 used Gameboys. But none of them would be nearly as cool as the one you built yourself.

Not only can this portable media player crank out movies and music, but it can play games from classic consoles from Nintendo and SEGA too. It can even charge itself or other devices with its built-in solar panels.

In addition to playing your MP3s and MP4s, the Media Street eMotion EM-SOL2GIG media player offers compatibility with NES/Famicom, GameBoy, GameBoy Color and SEGA Mega Drive (aka the Genesis stateside). Of course, that assumes you’ve got an idea of where to find some ROM files (hmm, ever heard of Google?) And when you’re done playing games, you can get some culture thanks to a text-to-speech E-book reader capability that can read any TXT file in either Chinese or English. It offers 2GB of on-board storage, plus an SD slot for memory expansion.

The portable console offers a 320×240 color display, and measures in at 5.5″ wide x 3″ high x 1″ thick – with most of the heft coming from the fold-out solar panels. The large solar panel not only charges the player’s internal battery, it can provide emergency juice to other portable gadgets such as mobile phones and digital cameras.

You can find the EM-SOL2GIG over on Amazon for $169.99 USD.

(BTW, this player looks awfully similar to this other solar game system, but that one makes no claims of SEGA emulation).

I was buzzing about over on the wonderful world of Etsy today, when I came across these absolutely awesome plush versions of popular portable electronic gadgets. French textile artist Kmila Rodz handcrafts these super special soft systems using felt, needle and thread, with a just a dash of love thrown in.

From the wonderfully whimsical folding Nintendo DS Lite (complete with stuffed stylus and a game of New Super Mario Bros. on the dual screens), to her squishy iPhone clone, I can’t decide which one I like the best. (I’m not sure what that plush Sushi roll is doing there, but it looks tasty alongside the iPhone).

Feeling retro? Kmila has also created this beautiful Nintendo Gameboy, playing a game of Tetris on its faux “LCD” screen. (There’s even a little Tetris “cartridge” sticking out of the back when you flip it over).

Want to get your grubby little hands on these wondrous plush playthings? You’d better head on over to Kmila’s Etsy shop before they’re all gone.

These ostentatious shoes and boots are embedded with working Gameboys. The best part? You can pop out the Gameboys and play with them!

Like almost every other cutting-edge, kooky techno-fashion mashup, these have been spotted on teenage girls in Japan. They don’t look easy to walk in, but that’s a small price to pay while looking hot and having not one but TWO Gameboys available on your person for use at any moment.

I like this yellow pair that not only showcases your Gameboys, but also your Pikachu figurines. Seriously, guys, it wasn’t enough to have the Gameboys? You needed Pokemon characters AND Gameboys? What’s next, you throw in a joystick and a couple of Furbys?

I’m not sure how one can find a pair of these to purchase, as I haven’t been able to figure it out. I’m afraid the only way to get your hands on a pair is to hie thee to Harajuku. In the meantime, you can see more pictures at syberpunk.

This portable gaming beast not only plays games from three classic Nintendo systems, it runs on the power of the sun. Out of the box, the player can handle NES/Famicom, Gameboy and Gameboy Color titles, as long as you can get the ROMs transfered to an SD card. Of course, I won’t tell you how to do that, but that’s what search engines are for, right?

In addition to taking on retro gaming sans batteries, the Mobile Power Station plays popular audio and video files, including MP3, WMA and MP4 (converted to AVI) formats. Electronic musician Joey Mariano (aka “Animal Style“) took an old GameBoy Color system and built a custom controller for it that uses 8 individual foot pedal controllers to jam out on the device.

Using a series of GameBoy audio sequencing hacks, the foot pedals allow for live improvisation with all sorts of electronic beeps and blips.

Animal Style has recorded a number of digital chiptune tracks using old video game systems as his primary sound source. Be sure to check out his discography and sample tracks here.

This supremely modified Nintendo Gameboy has become host to an entire Windows XP computer. The system uses that new EPIA Pico-ITX mobo I was telling you about a few days back to get things down to size. Connectivity to the outside world is achieved via a VGA, USB and Ethernet ports. The game cartridge slot has been replaced with a Compact Flash slot for storage and the A/B buttons have been transformed into power and drive activity lights.

Now the questions is, how long before the whole thing melts under its own heat?

The Plezo PMG-250 media player features technology that lets it play classic (and not so classic) games from Sega MegaDrive, Nintendo NES and GameBoy Color consoles. The PMG-250 has a 2.5″ LCD color screen, with stereo speakers and a joypad for controlling games. In addition to its game playing prowess, it can play audio and video clips in a variety of formats, and has an SD slot for expandable storage.

The manufacturer doesn’t indicate if they’ll be selling games for download onto the system, or if they’ll just rely on the savvy of owners to find their own (under various rocks.)

Retail price for the PMG-250 player is KRW 169,000 (appx. $180 USD.)

If you’ve ever tried to crack open your video game console for curiosity’s sake (or other, more devious purposes), you know how challenging it can be to find all of the right tools to get the job done without damaging your console. Now, a company called ZooZen, has put together this kit which includes all of the tools necessary to open just about every modern gaming console.

The $12.95 Access Pro Tool Kit V2 claims to have everything you need to open up the Wii, Gamecube, DS, Game Boy, GBA, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, PS3 and PSP. Tools include a variety of Torx, hex, Philips and flat bits, as well as some hard to find items such as an Xbox 360 case separator, and special nut setters and oddly shaped tri-wing bits specifically for Nintendo products. It all comes in a convenient carrying case with custom cutouts so you don’t lose any parts.
