It was just yesterday that we featured a cool portable Gamecube mod which we thought was pretty nifty. But I just stumbled onto another Gamecube handheld which is even cooler. And while making portable Gamecubes is actually quite common in modding circles, the Gamecube Envision is the best portable version of the console I’ve seen yet.

What’s really cool about the Envision is how truly portable it is. Unlike most Gamecube “handheld” mods, this one skips the bulky optical drive, and requires that games be copied off to an SD card, but that’s what really helps it slim down. It’s capable of running every Gamecube game out there, except for Luigi’s Mansion, which apparently still needs some hacking to make that happen. It can also play all SNES and NES titles, as well as some N64 titles, so it’s a real dream system for Nintendo fans.

The Envision was created by Jonathan Shine (aka “Tchay777″,) and is compact enough to carry around without any problem. Dimensions are just 6.5″(w) x 4.1255″ (h) x 1.375″ (d), and it weights about a pound. It’s so impressive that it actually looks like something Nintendo themselves would have released.

It runs completely on battery power, running for about 2 hours on a full charge. It lives in a custom molded case, and has built-in controllers and speakers too. Check it out in action in the video clip below:

It took about 7 months from start to finish for Tchay to complete this excellent build, and you can check out more details and pics over on the ModRetro Forums.

The Nintendo Gamecube is probably my least favorite console ever, but this portable mod improves upon it so much that I actually want to play. With the Sly Cube, you can take your Gamecube action to go since it is now more portable.

The design is really nice on this mod and it comes to us from a modder named Slipstream. Measuring in at about 11″ (w) x 5.75″ (d) x 1.75″ (h), it’s more like a netbook than a handheld though. The Sly Cube features a nice big 7″ LCD flip screen, a built-in 7.2v 6000mAh lithium-ion battery that’s good for 3-4 hours of game time, a built-in controller and ports for still extra controllers. Oh and it has built-in rumble, memory card slots, and a charge jack.

Nintendo needs to take heed of this awesome mod. If they released something like this themselves they could have mega-sales – especially if they updated it with modern hardware. I know I would buy one.

Attention parents who always buy the wrong thing: Nintendo will release a Holiday Wii bundle this October 23. I suggest that you don’t buy it. Even if the console and its controllers are in sleek black. Even it if it includes the New Super Mario Bros. game and a CD of the Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack. Because Nintendo is pulling a Sony here, removing backwards compatibility for Gamecube games.

This new, but worse Wii is also horizontal-only, while the older consoles can be positioned upright. That’s not a big drawback by any means, but it’s salt in the wounds of gamers who have been loyal to Nintendo. I’m still really disappointed that I can’t play PS2 games on my PS3 knowing that earlier the models had that capability. I wouldn’t want people who own both Wii and Gamecube games to feel that sting of disappointment either.

Fortunately you can still have a happy holiday and order the bundles that have the older version of the Wii – in both white or black –that supports Gamecube games. Those bundles – which come with a copy of Mario Kart Wii and the steering wheel accessory – are sold for $160 (USD), just $10 more than the stripped-down Holiday Bundle, but if you have several Gamecube games then I’m pretty sure this is still a no-brainer.

YouTuber Ashen123451′s portable console mod is a mish-mash of brands and generations. As you can see in the picture below, it’s a Gamecube in a PSP case. Or at least the front of a PSP case. Because this thing is portable in the same way two bricks taped together are portable.

But I’m being too harsh; it’s simply too much to expect anyone to fit the Gamecube’s guts into the PSP Slim’s original case. The truth is that the Fusion Micro is an awesome mod. It has two analog sticks, a Z button (it’s that small black button behind the R bumper), a toggle to switch the X and O buttons into A-B or B-A configuration and a battery, although it can only power the console for 2 hours. Here’s a closer look at the mod. It’s thickness will shock you. Or not. I just spoiled it. Dammit.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

And here it is doing what it does best:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Awesome mod. I wonder if legal and publishing concerns really make it impossible for Nintendo and Sony to make their portable offerings play games from their older systems, because I’d rather have this than some 3D gimmick.

The Wii has remained unaltered for five years, (well, the dust collecting on mine gets thicker everyday) but now Nintendo is getting ready to launch a new version of the console.

This new version looks pretty much the same, but it has a slightly larger disc drive and the onboard buttons have some new labels. The major change however, is something that fans of backwards compatibility will not like one bit. It won’t play Gamecube titles.

With no GC titles being played, you won’t need those Gamecube memory card slots either, so they are gone too. No worries though, Gamecube controller ports are still there for Wii games like Super Smash Bros Brawl.

For now, this new console has been confirmed for the UK market only, but I’m sure it will make it’s way to the U.S. eventually. The question is, how much will it cost? The Wii is already the cheapest you can buy, so how much cheaper does it get when you drop Gamecube compatibility?

If you’re like me, your old Nintendo GameCube is either gathering dust in a closet somewhere, or you’ve eBayed it by now. But there is one other thing you could do with your GameCube – turn it into a desktop organizer.

Actually, turning your GameCube into a desktop caddy is a task best left to the pros, like Etsy seller GreenCüb, whose tagline is simply “Office Supplies Made from Recycled Video Game Systems”. At this point the only said office supply is their GameCube caddy, which offers ample storage for your paperclips, pushpins, pens and other desktop doo-dads.

Each organizer is made from an actual (broken) GameCube, and features a handy metal tray in place of the disc drive, a pull-out drawer where the controllers once plugged in, a magnetic paperclip caddy on the vent holes, and pen/pencil holes in place of the Power and Reset buttons. There’s even a little shelf on back for storing your iPhone or other compact gadget too.

Sure, I suppose you could try and do this yourself, but I’d suggest that you head on over to GreenCüb’s Etsy shop and just buy one ready-made. Prices range from $39 to $49 (USD), depending on the particular GameCube model you want.

The Gamecube u features a fully-functional Gamecube console, along with a bright 5″ color LCD screen, and a built-in controller and memory card for storage. techknott crafted the case using CNC cut acrylic and MDF plywood, and there are dual controller ports built into the front of the portable if you want to use an. The only thing I don’t like about the handheld is the exposed game disc drive, but I don’t know where else you could really put the drive but on the back.

More pics in the gallery below:

Now, a company called ZooZen, has put together this kit which includes all of the tools necessary to open just about every modern gaming console.

The $12.95 Access Pro Tool Kit V2 claims to have everything you need to open up the Wii, Gamecube, DS, Game Boy, GBA, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, PS3 and PSP. Tools include a variety of Torx, hex, Philips and flat bits, as well as some hard to find items such as an Xbox 360 case separator, and special nut setters and oddly shaped tri-wing bits specifically for Nintendo products. It all comes in a convenient carrying case with custom cutouts so you don’t lose any parts.
