I’m a sucker for offbeat console games with a cool artistic style. From Katamari Damacy to Journey to Braid, these games with unique gameplay mechanics and unusual graphical flourishes are some of my all time favorites. While it’s too soon to tell if The Unfinished Swan will be joining the ranks of these classics, I’m liking what I’m seeing so far.

Coming from Sony’s legendary Santa Monica Studios and developed by Giant Sparrow, the game centers on a runaway swan who leads you through a kingdom filled with weird and wild creatures. As you move through the world, you discover your surroundings by splashing paint onto white surfaces – definitely an offbeat gameplay mechanism in my book. The game is expected to be loaded with puzzles and challenges as you make your way to the King who built the unusual world. Here’s a look at an early teaser for the game to whet your appetite.

Sony hasn’t announced a release date for The Unfinished Swan as of yet, but it definitely looks like the sort of thing that’ll show up on PlayStation Network versus being a high-priced disc title. You’ll definitely want to keep an eye out for this title as it gets closer to a release.

Whether it’s MegaMan, or Rayman, there’s just something so special about discovering what’s next as you continue on your left-to-right quest through a game’s universe. So when I saw the tribute to side-scrollers called Go Right, it brought back a ton of memories.

There are a lot of cheap and easy ways to organize CDs and DVDs. You can put them in disc racks, binders, cylinders or just place them on a shelf. All of those are great for storing a large number of discs, but if you want to have easy access to your favorite game, music or video, you might want to get some Disc Mounts.

Disc Mounts work just like the buttons that hold discs inside a typical case, except they’re magnetized. This way you can both display the artwork on the disc and have easy access to the disc itself.

It’s easy to see the downsides of this tool though. For one, you need to have a magnetic surface. Also, if you clean your room as often as I do – which is approximately zero times per lifetime – the discs are bound to gather dust because they’re exposed on the backside.

If you keep your place metal object-filled and dust-free, you can order Disc Mounts from Laboratory 424. $7.95(USD) gets you a dozen buttons.

Miniature wargames are one of the more niche tabletop games, not only because they tend to be very technical, but because they can be very costly because of the figurines, terrain and other props needed to play. But a miniature wargame called Mechaton can be played without splurging for miniatures, because it’s meant to be played with LEGOs.

Mechaton was invented by game designer and publisher Vincent Baker. For its tenth anniversary, Baker and his colleagues launched a new edition of the game called Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack, along with a Kickstarter fundraiser. I have not read the game’s rules but from what I can understand it allows for a lot of flexibility with regards to creating units, or Mobile Frames as they’re called in the game. This means that you can have a truly unique unit and most importantly you can make one from LEGO pieces, which should be cheaper than buying figurines. Check out the gallery below for a few examples of Mobile Frames:

Here’s the Kickstarter video for Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack:

I wish Baker and company would upload a more newbie-friendly video. Not that they need to – they’ve already reached their Kickstarter goal, but the fundraiser is still ongoing. If you already have a bunch of LEGOs, a $10(USD) pledge already gets you a PDF copy of the rulebook, including guidelines for building LEGO mechs. Compare that with the $99 Warhammer starter set. But the game does have high-end goodies for those who are willing to spend: Kickstarter backers who pledged at least $200 will receive unique Mobile Frames designed by Baker’s partners.

Learn more about Mechaton on Vincent Baker’s website and be sure to check out the Mobile Frame Zero Flickr pool for more awesome LEGO mechs.

I’m not a big watcher of Formula One racing, even though I can appreciate the skill that the drivers have and the speed that the cars are able to achieve as they go blazing around the racetrack. I’d like to race my own car on a road course, but I get really bored watching it on TV. I might check out the F1 season opener in Australia though if for no other reason than to see Heikki Kovalainen and his awesome Angry Birds helmet.

Angry Birds developer Rovio has teamed up with the Formula One team to advertise the game and some of the merchandise will be coming. The helmet the racer will wear at the season opener is painted up to look like the red Angry Bird complete with Heikki’s name written on the side in proper Angry Birds script. I’m not familiar with Heikki at all, but I will say that red helmet doesn’t go particularly well with his green driving suit.

I would like to see Rovio sign up whoever Heikki’s archrival is to wear a green pig helmet. I’d love to see some bird vs. pig action at 200 miles an hour on a racetrack. The marketing tie-in will also include some other items that will be released this spring and Angry Birds levels with a racing team will be coming later as well.

Last month Capcom announced Resident Evil 6 and that it will hit the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on November 20, 2012. That’s a long way off, but at least we are getting some news about the game in the meantime.

The latest RE game is set 10 years after the Raccoon City incident, and Leon and Chris will team up in this game. It will take place in a town called Lanshiang in China, in the year 2013. Other characters include Helena Harper: a secret service agent and the president’s bodyguard, Ingrid Hunnigan: Field Operations Support for Leon, and the US president Adam Benford. There’s also a mercenary character who has been told that “he is the man to save the world.” That’s all we know about him.

The game will also feature a revamped control scheme, including the ability to shoot while moving, and slide and roll tactics to get to cover. The zombies will also have some new tricks up their sleeves, the ability to run, jump and wield weapons. Seems like this could make it a whole new game. No more slow zombies lumbering towards you. This should be interesting. In my opinion, the franchise has been getting stale and this should definitely spice things up.

While it’s never been recommended to chuck around your precious smartphone, it looks like the new TheO Foam ball will allow you to do so, at least in a reasonable manner. While you probably won’t want to play dodgeball with your iPhone inside of it, there are specially-designed games that you can play with it.

The TheO Foam ball is a thick, protective foam ball with a cutout allowing you to cradle your iPhone or Android phone inside of it. It’s designed so that you play some games with the people you know IRL, not just online. The three games that are currently available are Hot Potato, Interrogo, and Bowling. The apps all use the phone’s accelerometer to function, though it’s unclear how they provide feedback while the ball is rolling along the ground or being passed around the room.

Price and availability haven’t yet been announced, but it sounds kind of interesting. The project was initially slated for funding on Kickstarter, but was unsuccessful. From the Kickstarter page, you can deduce that it will cost at least $25 with the three apps once it’s released.

Being a tech geek, you’ll more often find me playing video games than board games, but that doesn’t mean I don’t still enjoy a good old game of Scrabble. Sure, you won’t be playing with someone across the globe, like with Words with Friends, but at least you get to play with some actual wooden tiles. If you’re really into Scrabble, and also happen to have deep pockets, here’s something you’ll want to consider.

What you’re staring at here is a giant Scrabble board, which measures in at nearly 49 square feet. It’s made by artist John Kahn, using Russian birch plywood, covered with galvanized steel and vinyl game graphics. Each one of the game’s 100 tiles is made from wood with a strong magnet inside, and measures a whopping 4-3/8″ square. The board also comes with two wall-mounted tile holders, and a pair of tile racks for game play – though it would have been nice for them to include two more – in case you want to play a four-player game.

Only nine of this gigantic Scrabble set are being made, and with a price tag of $12,000(USD), I can’t imagine they’ll all be snapped up quickly. But if you have enough enough capital to afford one, you can check it out over at Hammacher Schlemmer now.

Nintendo may be against porting their games onto mobile devices, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t considering an app store of their own for their Wii U console. It would of course be similar to iTunes or the Android Market, but packed with stuff just for your console.
Rumors would seem to indicate that non-game apps like MLB.tv will run on the regular TV interface, along with more tablet-like apps that will be optimized for the Wii U’s touchscreen display. You can also expect a “wider variety” of apps than what DSiWare and WiiWare offer now.

By the time the console arrives sometime in 2012, hopefully this app store will be up and running. So far, Nintendo has no comment, but if they are going to compete, I think they need to just do it and run with the idea.

You get together with the boys on Wednesday nights and play a couple of hands of poker and lose all of your money. All in all, not that great of a time. (Except for the time when there were four Princess Leia cosplayers who were invited. That – that was fun.) With the Star Wars Poker Set, you’re guaranteed a good time, since anything that involves Star Wars memorabilia is automatically exciting.

This limited-edition set normally costs £70, or (~$109 USD), but is on sale at Firebox for just £35, (~$55 USD). For this awesome holiday price, you get 200 Star Wars chips that feature greats such as Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, the saggy version of Obi-Wan, and Yoda. There’s also a metal Death Star dealer chip included.

The Star Wars Poker Set also comes with a carrying case etched with the Star Wars logo on front, and equipped with 72 LEDs inside. Why are there 72 LEDs? To make your poker chips look like lightsabers, of course! The chips are transparent, so the light shines through and gives a cool effect.

The set also includes two decks of geeky Star Wars cards and two standard decks, so you’re getting a whole lot of bang for your buck. Though not as much as if you were to buy the Exploding Minecraft Creeper Plushie – then you would get your revenge plus an explosion. You know what they say – EXPLOSIONS ARE AMAZING. “Do they really say that?” No, but I do – FIRE IN THE HOLE! *Blows up a watermelon*

If you’re looking for more Star Wars stuff, check out the Needle-Felted Star Wars Ornaments or the Darth Vader Rorschach Thing.

How do you get more customers into your bar? Create some new fancy drinks? Maybe have a game night? Well, The Exhibit Bar in London went the video game route, by installing some new gaming urinals in the men’s bathroom.

These video game urinals were created by Captive Media, which is a good name. As long as you are slinging wiz, you’re not going anywhere, therefore you’re captive to their entertainment. The games have names like you would expect: Clever Dick, On The Piste and so on, and they are entire controlled by peeing.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Just aim your stream in the proper direction, and you control the game. If you are proud of your score, you can also post it on the online leader board and Twitter.

Once they market the hell out of this and add advertising, the novelty will wear off and then guess what? Prepare for pooping games. Although I suppose those high scores will be more geared to the largest of humans. I can’t wait. That’s sarcasm. I can wait. Please never make this happen.

From our simple beginnings back on June 11, 2006, until now, our humble little site has brought you all manner of cool and unusual gadgets and gizmos, wacky video games, crazy robots, and unique geekery from around the world.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you, our readers and fans for all of your support over the years. Without you, we wouldn’t be here. I started Technabob out as a side project while I had a full-time “real job” and literally no budget – working all hours of the night and the wee hours of the morning scrounging for cool stuff to write about. Over the years, we’ve managed to grow the site enough that I was able to quit my full time job, focus 100% on blogging, and actually make a decent living at it. It’s thanks to your readership and loyalty that I can feed and clothe myself, pay for health insurance, and our small, but dedicated team of writers. I know many of you dream of working for yourself some day, and this little blog here is proof-positive that if you put your mind to something, you can really achieve your dream.

As a result of our success, I even have been able to expand our tiny blogging empire, with the launch of The Awesomer (shameless plug time) – which features all tons of cool stuff, like smokin’ fast cars, slick industrial design and art, funny videos, action-packed games, movies, and even a smattering of gadgets and tech. It’s a true showcase for creativity and generally awesome things. If you haven’t checked it out, you should. It’s pretty addictive if I must say so myself.

You’d think that with 10,000 posts under Technabob’s collective belts, there wouldn’t be much else to say, but we’ve only just nicked the surface on the world of cool gadgets, gizmos, games and weird science. Thankfully, there’s no end to the creativity and ingenuity of mankind.

Thanks again. Geeks reign supreme!

If you are one of the masses that purchased Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on launch day, you helped contribute to a record breaking 24 hours. MW3 set an all time video game sales record with a gigantic launch day. In North America and the UK alone, the game racked up over $400 million in sales.

The game moved about 6.5 million copies in those two areas alone. The game that MW3 beat out to take the record was Activision title from last year, Black Ops. That game made $360 million in the first 24 hours. The game proved so popular that Xbox Live set a record as well. There was so much launch demand for the game, prior to its release thieves hit a truck with 6,000 copies of the game inside worth more than a half million dollars.

After two days of the game being available, a record was set for simultaneous players on Xbox Live for a new peak concurrency record. “We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc. “Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.”

Last we heard, the Wii U was only going to have support for one lone tablet controller, which really didn’t make a lot of sense. I mean who wants to pass the controller around when playing two player games? Well, now it looks like it may support a pair of tablet controllers.

According to one anonymous developer, there is evidence that Nintendo is prepping the console to support two of its touchscreen tablet controllers. The unnamed source says there are “numerous indications” in the Wii U code base that suggest this.

We know that the touchscreen controllers will combine tablet functions with the original Wii‘s set of motion controls. The developer says that Nintendo almost has the kinks worked out to get two tablet controllers to work with the console. If you were hoping for more, for four player games, you can forget it. Some horsepower may need to be sacrificed just to get two to work.

Some games like Ridge Racer will sell for as low as 3,980 Yen.
If that seems high, you can get download versions of the same games for 1,000 Yen (~$7 USD) less if you want to save a little money. But U.S. gamers need not worry, it seems extra high because of the exchange rate. Here in the U.S., where brand new games should cost about $59 (USD), and it’s possible download versions will sell for less – only time will tell. Regardless, those who are importing the console and games will be paying a lot more.

In Japan, you can expect the PS Vita to cost the equivalent of $390(USD) for the 3G version or $325(USD) for Wi-Fi, while the U.S. retail prices will be $299(USD) and $249(USD).

I think that one of the coolest games you can get for Android smartphones is Cut the Rope. It’s right up there with Angry Birds for my kids and me. Om Nom is the main character in the game and not too long ago he went plush with toys to go with the game. The developer has announced that the game has been updated with a bunch of new levels to enjoy.

The new update landed this week, brings the game up to version 1.1.1, and adds in a new Toy Box that has 25 new levels with new game mechanics. It’s really cool to see the developer add in that many new levels at no charge.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The update also fixes some bugs and optimizes the play. The game requires Android 1.6 or higher. ZeptoLab, the creators of the game claim that over 55 million people have played Cut the Rope to date. It continues to be highly rated with 4.5 stars on Android and the iOS version has an average 4.81 rating.

PinkAxolotl (Elisabeth Redel) created this amazing mashup for her boyfriend. (What has your girlfriend done for you this week? Anything this cool?) Of course all of the streets are now named after streets from the game. GO is now G.O.A.T. which is very clever and “free parking” is the “please stand by” screen, also very appropriate.

What about the cards? Each one has a perk from Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas with a retro playing card image in back. It is truly a work of geek art. I wish Elizabeth were my girlfriend.

And judging by the trailer below, it has everything that you want in a classic Alien story. If you look close you’ll even notice a mech-suit like the one Ripley wore when she battled the Alien Queen.

No one may hear you scream in space, but you can feel free to scream at the top of your lungs when you play this one in your own home. It looks like they took a lot of cues from the Dead Space games and merged them with the Alien movies. The result is a good looking game that seems to have great atmosphere.

You can expect the game to arrive in 2012. Right now it is still in development by Gearbox Software. It will arrive next year on the Wii U, PC, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
