I don’t cook a lot. And when I do, it usually ends up in disaster: either it ends up getting undercooked (because I have no patience and think it’s done when it’s really not) or overcooked (because I forgot all about it and left the stove on without switching the timer on.)

This means a lot of wasted food, a lot of frustration, and many more minutes where me (and my family) go hungry while I fix up some instant noodles or call for delivery.

If sometimes, you get a little bit absent minded in the kitchen like me, then you’ll definitely find the Scale Gas Range concept useful. It’s also a lifesaver, both figuratively and literally.

The Scale Gas Range is a cooking range with an integrated weighing scale, designed by Naeun Kang of SADI. The concept works on the assumption that as food is cooked, water is gradually evaporated. When the weight of whatever it is you’re cooking decreased by 30%, the gas valve is shut off automatically.

Of course, not all food would cook properly on the basis of this assumption, but it should at least prevent you from overcooking.

Have you ever tried leaving your house or apartment, only to go back after walking a few blocks because you’ve got that nagging feeling that you might have forgotten to turn something off?

I’m not talking about leaving the computer or television on (although both cases still aren’t ideal.) I’m talking about leaving the power and gas on in your home – which could lead to dangerous and life-threatening circumstances if you plan on being away for an extended amount of time.

So to prevent all that, Eun Ah Kim, Jinhyuk Rho and Maria Rho came up with Off, the door handle that’s connected to your mains like gas supply and electricity. I mean, how can you forget to switch it off when the switches are just on your door handle, which is most probably the last thing inside your house that you’ll touch?

There are three functions on the Off handle. You can choose to turn off just your lights, just the gas, or turn everything off. Just rotate the dial to the function, push the button, and leave your home. Quick, easy, simple, and safe.

Of course, this won’t work if you need to keep your heat and water heater running in the winter time, and there’s no mention of how it would start all your pilot lights back up when gas is reactivated.

I’m sure many of you have are familiar with the Rubens’ Tube, which is a device which works sort of like a VU meter, but with flames. But I have to say that this thing is even cooler. It’s like a Rubens’ Tube which operates on two axes.

The Pyro Board was constructed for Fysickshow Aarhus in Denmark, and can create patterns from sound using flammable gas, pushed through a grid of pinhole jets. The rig sits on top of a loudspeaker inside of a flameproof metal box. When the sounds or music are played, they create low and high pressure zones between the metal box and the grid. These result in cool patterns of flame which move along to the beat of the music. Here, check it out for yourself:

It’s sort of like one of those sound-synchronized light shows, but using flames instead of LEDs or bulbs. While the patterns are definitely not as predictable as a Rubens’ tube, I think the effect is still pretty cool. Now I want a nightclub to install one of these and hand out marshmallows to roast on top of it.

This has to be one of the most unusual household appliances I’ve ever seen. What you’re looking at here is an old Johnson outboard motorboat engine, converted into a blender. Why? Because nobody had done it before, I guess.

According to the description of this thing, this 1958 Johnson Sea Horse 18 outboard motor has had its guts replaced with a small Homelite 2-cycle motor, which powers the blender that’s been built into the top. All in all, it took the guy who made it 6 months to engineer and build this gas-powered blending beast.

Don’t believe that this thing actually works? Watch as its creator fixes an icy-cold cocktail with one pull of the starter handle.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Well, that answers that. If you want it, head on over to Etsy where you can get your hands on this thing for $2,800(USD), which also happens to make it the world’s most expensive blender. My only concern is the mixture of gasoline vapors, exhaust and tequila mix might make for one mean hangover.

This is one cool-looking suitcase. It comes from Ivorilla, a Frankfurt-based company, and it’s called the GasCase. If you’re looking to disguise your luggage as a can of gasoline, or just to have stand-out bags, definitely check these out.

I don’t know if carrying around a case that looks like it could be filled with flammable fuel is a good thing when you have to go through airport security, but hey, these look awesome. The bags are available in either Zippo-lighter style flip-top or traditional suitcase cabinet-door variants. And if you thought that these were made out of plastic, you’d be dead wrong! They’re made out of steel and mounted on heavy-duty trolley wheels.

This is kind of cool, but absurd at the same time. Steel luggage will weigh a ton compared to plastic or nylon luggage. You lose a lot of packing capacity to the actual weight of the bag. If you’re exploring and you need a heavy duty case, this might be the perfect one. For now, these cases are only available in Europe and prices start at around €100 (appx. $137 (USD).

The Fill ‘Er Up savings bank looks just like the gas gauge on a car, but instead of keeping track of fuel, it keeps track of coins. And just like when your gas tank is on “E”, you’ll need to feed this with more money to keep it running. As simple and fun as the idea is, I think all piggy banks should have this feature. It’s part of Fred’s latest collection, so I don’t know how much it will cost or when it will hit stores, but for now, keep an eye on Perpetual Kid, since they’ve been known to stock lots of goodies from Fred & Friends.
