I think this sort of art that I’m talking about is best exemplified by what Internationally-renowned graffiti artist Tilt did with this Au Vieux Panier hotel room in Marseille, France.

The hotel commissioned the artist to reconceptualize this room for their hotel, which he eventually dubbed as the “Panic Room.”

There seems to be an invisible line dividing the room, from pristine white to shockingly colorful and graffiti-filled. Tilt’s room is just one of five that have been re-done in more than just the aesthetic sense in the Au Vieux Panier.

If I ever get a chance to stay at the hotel, I know what room I’d be picking. Although I pretty much have a feeling a night in the Panic Room would burn a pretty big hole in my pocket.

While one might think that painting rainbows would be a simple task, it isn’t if you’re going for perfection. This particular method involves a custom frame, some bike wheels, a few gears, a cordless drill, some circuitry and the necessary paint. If you think there’s not enough joy out in your town, there are always ways to spread rainbows around. Whether you take that literally or not is up to you entirely. If you’re wanting one for yourself, you’ll have figure out how to create it on your own.

While some of the graffiti paintings are cool, others are a bit less than so, especially the one with Jar-Jar. Naturally, my faves are the ones with Darth Vader. There are lots of good ones with stormtroopers and R2-D2 as well.

The AT-AT as a dog is pretty funny, if not the most original concept.

GML was created by Jamie Wilkinson, Evan Roth, Theodore Watson and Chris Sugrue and stores gestural graffiti motions as a set of XML data tags. They fondly refer to GML as “today’s new digital standard for tomorrow’s vandals.”

There are already a variety of applications that can read and store GML data, including Grafitti Analysis, Laser Tag (which is completely awesome all on its own), Fat Tag Deluxe (for virtual iPhone graffiti) and EyeWriter (for drawing with eye movements), among others. You can even upload and store your graffiti creations and share them for others to download over at 000000book.com.

There’s even Robotagger, an industrial robotic arm with a paintbrush in it’s grip, and programmed to follow GML paths to create robotic graffiti!

The guys over at Robots.net even go so far to imagine a future where you’d record your graffiti at home, then send out your own robotic army with their own spray cans to do your bidding. Sweet. Just not on my garage, please.

The elevator art was designed by Darrin Umboh, who is a member of the Dutch artist agency Shop Around.

The people who work in the building probably get the urge to ride the elevator up and down just to get a better look at the art.

Not all of the designs in WebUrbanist’s excellent collection are traditional graffiti; some of the artwork is “reverse graffiti.” Instead of painting or otherwise marking a surface, the artist carefully cleans the areas that need to be lighter for the design. There are usually plenty of places in our cities for the intrepid young artist to practice that form.

Recently sighted in South Beach, Miami, the stencils feature a dayglo backdrop and a bold graphic treatment of Mario that makes him really pop.

Next up for Mario is a stop in Lutry, Switzerland, for the upcoming Game & Watch art show at Vantard Gallery, which runs from April 26 to May 24, 2008.
