At first glance at this picture, you’d think you were looking at an AK-47 covered in white paint. But on closer examination, you’ll realize it’s actually an intricate papercraft model.

Created by artist Martin Postler and Ian Ferguson of London’s Postlerferguson, these one in the photo above was created for an art exhibition back in 2008. You too can have your own paper arsenal, thanks to Postler’s series of papercraft weapons that are available for purchase.

In addition to the original AK-47 design, there’s a paper M4A8 carbine, an mp5, an Uzi, and a grenade (also known as a “Mills Bomb”). All you need is some glue, scissors, and a lot of patience to build your own life-size weapon models.

Keep in mind these are not easy things to put together, and they require some serious paper cutting and gluing abilities if you want them to look as good as the pictures. Each of the models is available over at gestalten for €19.90 to €19.90 (appx. $20 to $27 USD) each.

Paper bullets not included.

These plush, handmade Resident Evil grenades will sadly not explode on impact… but that does mean they can be thrown over and over, to the great detriment and humiliation of your victim. Or you can just throw ‘em at the television, which is what creator Id decided to do.

Ah, lovely, colorful, and not-quite-deadly. Two out of three ain’t bad, as they say. Id’s softer, gentler grenades are at least life-size, so you know they’re satisfying in the hand, even if they are significantly more squeezable than a real grenade. Also? Less useful against zombies, or not-zombies, as the case may be (those last Resident Evil games have been veering away from the normal undead menace, after all… if you can call any violent, face-pounding menace of any sort normal).

But they look great in Photoshop, and really, that should be enough for anyone.

As far as hacks and mods go, retrofitting a decommissioned hand grenade with mp3 playing guts is on the top of the clever and creative list. But as far as real world application is concerned? Well, I wouldn’t be whipping this thing out at work anytime soon. Or school. And definitely not on the train.

The mp3 grenade is Matt from NYC Resistor’s baby, as well as his childhood dream – or so he claims. I really can’t imagine grenade + music = smiley face entered his head as a child.

Wherever or whenever the idea came from, Matt really did bring it to life – but not before giving his workmates a scare after forgetting to mention a box of hand grenades would be arriving at their office. After clearing things up, Matt got to work. First, he fitted the grenade’s pinhole with a 1/8-inch jack. Then, after hacksawing the body open, he replaced its grenadey guts with a Sansa 2GB mp3 player, which apparently called for “a session of intense soldering onto very tiny soldering points.”

A few legally purchased mp3 tracks later and viola – instant mp3 grenade.

I have a very vague memory of playing with one of these Terminator joysticks on my old Atari computer system back in the 80s. I can’t believe somebody managed to dig one of these oddities up.

I found these images over on Klonoaxero’s Flickr page, where he says he recently picked up this suspicious looking Danish retro Terminator grenade controller from a friend. From what I recall, the controller had a DB-9 Atari connector so it worked with most game systems and PCs that supported that standard.

I’m kind of surprised that the Terminator’s tagline was “THE ULTIMATE CONTROLLER” – I was thinking something like “THE LAST CONTROLLER YOU’LL EVER PLAY WITH.”

In the browser game Fragger, you aim grenades in order to solve problems. Er, puzzles. Puzzles. Though, in a pinch, I’d bet a grenade could solve an awful lot of problems.

Underneath, this simple game is about strategy (and blowing dudes up), and it’s important to consider each move carefully, because until you can prove yourself, you’ve got a limited amount of grenades.

Explosive modder Matt purchased some decommissioned test grenades and decided that it would make for a great MP3 player shell. So does it? Yesno.

Matt stuffed the innards of a 2GB Sansa Clip into the grenade. This is the original, cute and airport safe Sansa Clip shell:

The default shell looks boring now, but at least it’s more practical, plus it’s easier to load songs into it this way. But I guess we can’t expect people who stuff things into grenades to be practical. Maybe Rambo would want one of this.

Although the current set-up is already functional according to Matt, he also says that he still has to wire up the buttons and then weld the whole thing shut. I don’t know, I guess it’s a lot more awesome if I see it in person, but then again if I see someone take this out of his pocket I’ll be outside the blast radius in a heartbeat. I’ll be Usain Bolt. A shrieking, pants-pissing Usain Bolt.

Matt has more pictures of the grenadification on his Flickr site.

Still, assuming the explosives have been thoroughly scrubbed from the innards of the old grenade casing, I suppose you’d look mighty macho controlling your computer with one of these bad boys. The guy who modded this one even went through the extra effort to wire up the trigger as the left mouse button.

It sure doesn’t look ergonomically friendly, but should you really expect comfort from a hand grenade anyway?

Maybe it’s just me, but I think it’s a bad idea to strap a live hand grenade to your wrist (or any part of your person, for that matter). I’d especially be wary of one that’s making a subtle ticking noise. But that’s exactly what the guys at Vestal would have you do, thanks to their over-the-top Grenade wristwatches.

The Grenade watch looks like an explosive device, but when you flip the lever, it opens to reveal a clock movement. While they won’t actually withstand an explosion, they should hold up pretty well thanks to their Stainless Steel case construction, durable mineral glass crystal and water-resistance to 3ATM.

They’re available in Army Green or Matte Black finishes and come with either a skinny canvas or wide leather and canvas wristband. I managed to find all four styles over on WatchWear.com starting around $125 each.

Just don’t blame me when you get stopped trying to go through airport security with one of these strapped to your wrist.

If you’re looking for the ultimate way to wake up your roomie, or just want to give someone a good old-fashioned heart attack, the Sonic Grenade might just fill the bill.

To startle your unsuspecting victim, simple pull the pin and lob your grenade in their general direction. The Sonic Grenade lets out an ear-shattering sound that should scare (and annoy) the bejesus out of just about anyone who’s not legally deaf. As an added bonus, your unknowing victim cannot shut off the grenade without the pin. It’s just $13.95 from Firebox.com.
