This application for the iPhone lets you create cool vocal/guitar sound mash-ups that sound like something off of Frampton Comes Alive or Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet.

LoL Software’s TALKBOX app for the iPhone lets you manipulate sounds with your mouth, creating that classic 1970s guitar wah-wah sound.

You manipulate the tone by changing the shape of your mouth while the sound samples play. Because you need to put the iPhone really close to your mouth to get the effect right, you might look a little silly playing the TALKBOX, but once you perfect the mouth movements, you’ll have a hard time putting it down. Check out the video below for a little Hendrix Star Spangled Banner tribute…

TALKBOX comes pre-loaded with almost 30 built-in guitar, bass, and funk tracks for you to pair up your voice with. I’m hoping they’ll add the ability to load your own tracks in, but for now you’re limited to the built-in tunes. You can grab a copy over at the iTunes App Store for just 99 cents and rock out!

Just don’t blame me when people think you’re trying to eat your iPhone.

This isn’t about being amazing at Guitar Hero; lots of people are amazing Guitar Hero players.
The genius of this particular mod (beyond the fact that it’s a guitar) lies in the way the guitar is utilized. Not only does the conversion not affect (much) the guitar’s primary use–you can still play it–but when used as a controller, it operates in much the same way as the actual controller. Press the frets on one, press the frets on the other.

There are plans to expand the project further, as though this isn’t cool enough.

The guitar controllers that come with Guitar Hero or Rock Band games are made of plastic and have a cheap feel. Then again they were probably made like that so you – and your kids – can jump around with it with ease. But what about the prodigies who post videos of themselves online, exhibiting their perfectly shredded Through the Fire & Flames on Insanely Extreme Expert Royale with Cheese? Where is the guitar worthy of their insane button-pushing abilities? Fret not, Logitech’s guitar controller is here.

Logitech’s Guitar Controller is officially for Guitar Hero games on the PS 3 and Guitar Hero: World Tour on the PS 2, but there’s a good chance it’ll work on Rock Band for the PS 3 as well. It has a solid body and its neck is made of wood, while the shiny frets and tuning peg handles are real metal. It also has a Star Power button and a touch-sensitive neck slider for Guitar Hero: World Tour.

Logitech’s axe isn’t for everyone, that’s for sure. No, I’m not saying you need to have mad skills to be worthy of it. because what you need is $200 USD. At this point may I just say that you can get a real guitar – a no frills, basic electric guitar, but still – for less than that. But if you must have this controller, you can pre-order it now at Logitech’s website.

You read that right–this Super Mario Bros shuns the traditional controller and instead relies on music (clapping, drumming, singing) to get to that other castle. Artists Marc Sciglimpaglia and Phoenix Toews, the minds behind this remix, used “nin.reflux” software to hack the ROM in order to produce the effect.

And lo! There is even a video. Super Mario Hero-Band? I’d try it.

It’s a good time to be a music geek, but it’s an even better time to be a wannabe music geek. Thanks to the power of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, not only can you fill your house up with little plastic instruments, you can also cram all the rest of your available space with kitschy rock decor, like this Fender guitar lamp.

Oh, sure, I know what you’re thinking. It’s a lamp that’s also a guitar; there’s nothing particularly geeky about that. Except this is a USB lamp and will need to play nice with your computer. At least it will bring the power of music to your desk.

The Fender lamp is available from Amazon for $19.99. Its rock quotient? Immeasurable.

Attention imaginary Satrianis, your iPhone app is in the house: Air Guitar by Inedible Software. You’ll be shredding the atmosphere in no time at all, thanks to the app’s simple yet intuitive interface.

Instructions will appear when you open the app; hold the iPhone sideways and a small, chubby fretboard appears. Press one – or all four, your call – of the notes and then move your arm up and down to “strum”. A note is also played if you strum without holding down anything on the fretboard.

As you can see, Air Guitar is actually Air Bass as well. Make that Air Guitar & Air Bass with whammy. The app compensates for the small fretboard by allowing users to customize the chord progression, either by choosing any of the 3 presets or by creating their own arrangement. As with all things that require motion you’ll learn more about the app if you see it in action, so here’s a demo from Inedible Software:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Fun right? Air Guitar is already available at the iTunes Store for $2 USD. Don’t have too much fun though; I’m willing to bet my brother’s guitar and amp that sooner or later someone’s going to go smash his iPhone – along with a window or a face – while pretending to be Eddie Van Halen.

For all you headbangers out there, the guitars that come with the Rock Band and Guitar Hero games probably seem kind of tame lame. Well now you can truly rock out with this axe that’s more appropriate for your thrashing tendencies.

dreamGEAR’s new WarBeast controller for the Playstation 3 has the looks of a serious heavy metal guitar. Designed by rock guitar maker B.C. Rich, the WarBeast is a full-size guitar controller with some serious edge. As a matter of fact, it’s actually based on a real guitar that Rich created. I’d be surprised if somebody doesn’t poke out an eye or stab someone in the kidney with those pointy edges.

The WarBeast is completely wireless, and is backwards compatible with the PS2 if you happen to still be living in the dark ages. The guitar features an oversize glowing strumbar, detatchable faceplates, and even little inlaid skulls between the fret bars. Sweet!

So if you’re ready to unleash your inner Derek Smalls, you can get your hands on the WarBeast controller now for just $89.99 over on Amazon.

Conner over at SlipperyBrick just tipped me off to his latest creation, and it’s quite a doozy. Combining two of my favorite pastimes, Guitar Hero and the Atari 2600, this new casemod is a real beaut.

Just plug your old Atari 2600 cartridges into the body of this heavily customized Guitar Hero Gibson Les Paul, and you can play all of your favorite 8-bit classics.

The console is wrapped up in a custom cut circuite board motif, and in place of the strum bar, there’s a tiny LCD screen. And so he could actually play the games while holding it like a guitar, Conner embedded the fire button into the neck of the guitar and a small joystick and paddle controller right into the body of the guitar. And since it runs on AA batteries, it’s totally portable.

I’m pretty sure just about any 2600 game out there would be more fun on this thing than E.T., but that’s the only screenshot that I managed to get. Maybe some Pitfall or Kaboom would be better?

It took Conner about 2 months to put together this Frankenstein’s monster of gaming goodness, and it was certainly worth the wait from the look of things. Now all he needs to do is figure out a way get a version of Guitar Hero to run on the Atari 2600.

Are you and your guitar inseparable? Well even if you are addicted to playing when you’re on the road, there’s no denying it’s a pain in the a$$ to carry a full-size guitar on an airplane or train. Here’s a guitar that breaks down to fit into a compact “gig bag”, so you can take it anywhere.

Aria’s Sinsonido series of guitars and basses somewhat resemble “normal” string instruments, but they’ve done away with the bulky wood body and replaced it with a lightweight rubber-coated aluminum frame.

The body can be broken down to fit easily into a carrying bag for transportaion, and the entire guitar weighs in at about 4 pounds. Even though it’s lightweight, the fretboard is built from durable mahogany wood, making it feel much more substantial than it looks.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

A built-in custom stereo condenser microphone picks up the audio and relays it to an internal pre-amp and a headphone jack for portability. Sinsonido guitars and basses can be found over at Adirondack Guitars starting around $400 a piece.

Now all I need is a version that works with Rock Band, and I’ll be all set.

Like that big rock concert sound, but don’t want to carry around a Marshall stack on your back? Then check out this pocket-sized guitar amp which lets you turn it up to 11 all in the privacy of your own headphones.

Despite its size, Waves’ iGTR Personal Guitar Processor is a sophisticated piece of music gear, packing in a variety of effects which simulate the sounds of concert amplifiers and effect processors.

The portable gadget offers up a variety of virtual amp sound profiles which start out as simple as “Warm”, “Normal” and “Bright”, but that can be tuned and tweaked to the exact sound you like. The iGTR also offers effects like Phase, Tremelo and Wah-Wah, as well as Reverb, Chorus and Delay settings.

You can get your hands on the iGTR over at Sweetwater Music for just $80 USD.

What is it these days with everyone jumping onto the blogging bandwagon? This bass guitar effect pedal tries to co-opt the popularity of blogs by donning the unlikely and unusual name “Bass Blogger”.

Electro-harmonix Bass Blogger doesn’t just try to hitch its wagon to the online star with its name. The maker goes so far to describe the pedal in the following way:“Ultra subtle and perfect distortion creates the perfect dialog with your drummer.”

I wonder if the bassist-to-drummer dialog includes an inordinate amount of comment spam. While it certainly wouldn’t be the first time I heard of a blog that produced a bunch of distorted fuzz, that’s about the only real similarity I can come up with.

If you’re ready to see what sort of blogging your bass is really capable of, you can grab one over on the Old Town School of Folk Music eBay store for just $79 clams.

While games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band are a blast to play, their out-of-the-box guitars don’t have a tremendous amount of personality. Now you can get your hands on some beautifully handpainted guitar controllers that’ll have all of your friends green with envy.

Each limited edition $399 ArtGuitar is individually painted with logos and imagery from popular rock icons. And this isn’t just a cheap surface paint job, it’s actually embedded under the coating of the guitar, so it won’t scratch off from excessive strumming. ArtGuitar starts out with a substantial real wood Peavey AG RiffMaster controller, then embellishes it with bold rock imagery licensed from artists including KISS, Lynyrd Skynrd, Ozzy Osbourne and Pantera.

At this point, the controllers are only available for the PlayStation 2, but hopefully they’ll get around to Xbox 360 and PS3 versions in the future. You can check out the entire collection over on the ArtGuitar online shop.

Guitar Hero fans rejoice. Starting this June, you’ll be able to get your rock fix on the road with this portable Nintendo DS version of the highly-addictive music game.

Guitar Hero: On Tour comes complete with an innovative button controller that plugs into the expansion port on the bottom of the DS Lite (I’m not sure if it works on the DS Phat yet). The game is controlled by turning the DS on its side, pressing the fret buttons and strumming on the DS bottom screen with an included guitar pick stylus. To keep your DS from flying out of your grip while you’re rockin’ out, the controller includes a sturdy guitar grip strap.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Developed for Activision by Vicarious Visions, the pint-sized version of the game comes with about 25 “monster” tracks, and a variety of different gameplay modes. There’s also word that the DS’ microphone comes into play (presumably to activate “Star Power” mode) as well in some whimsical mini games. The game will also support multi-player gaming, with both co-op and competitive modes using the local wireless capabilities of the DS.

Priced at $49.99, including the controller, Guitar Hero: On Tour will ship on June 22, 2008, and can now be pre-ordered on Amazon. So what are you waiting for?

I’m as addicted to Rock Band as the next gaming geek, but I still wish the strum bar on the game’s Fender Stratocaster felt more like a real guitar string. Now you get your hands on a mod kit which will let you swap out the plastic strum bar with an actual metal guitar string.

Originally a one-of-a-kind guitar mod designed by a guy going by the name A4AJ, it’s now available as a (patent-pending) kit you can install on your own guitar.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The kit includes everything you need to swap out the plastic bar with a playable string, special strum switch, along with several metal strings, springs and even a Fender guitar pick. Yep, with this mod in place and the tension cranked up, you can play the guitar with a pick!

Keep in mind that the kit does not include the guitar or the wood backboard, and requires that you perform some fairly significant surgery (Dremel, drilling and soldering) on your stock Stratocaster — obviously voiding your warranty.

The kit works with the PS2, PS3 or Xbox 360 versions of the guitar and is currently up for auction on eBay with a starting bid of $75. At this point A4AJ hasn’t geared up production on the kit, so you’ll have to have the top bid if you want this one.

If you’re way too addicted to those Guitar Hero games, you’ve got a couple of new ways to keep it with you wherever you go. A few days back, I brought you that pint-sized pocket GH LCD game. But you probably can’t take that into the conference room at work without somebody hearing you rock out. So if you need to get your game on, but must do it in silence, check out this great Guitar Hero t-shirt.

Featuring the stylized body of the famous red Gibson SG electric guitar, the shirt lets strum and whammy without making a sound (unless, of course, you make funny mouth sounds whenever you play air guitar). Sure, people around you might think that incessantly caressing your belly is a little odd, but who really cares?

You can find the Guitar Hero t-shirt from istheshiRt for €23,90 (appx. $35 USD).

Can’t get enough Guitar Hero? Well now you can carry a miniature version of the game anywhere you go. The 7 ¾” X 3” guitar is small enough to easily carry around in your backpack, but the neck folds down so you can even fit it in your pocket.

Basic Fun’s pint-sized Guitar Hero Caribiner game offers up a variety of rock tunes from both Guitar Hero I and II, including Smoke on the Water, Rock this Town, Cherry Pie, Killer Queen, You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’, Miserlou, Heart Shaped Box, Message in a Bottle, Jessica, and Surrender. An LCD screen displays the notes required, and you simply tap on the color-coded buttons when you’re ready to jam. There’s even a miniature version of the all-important “whammy bar” so you can give your music some extra finesse.

The guys at Basic Fun worked closely with the game’s original developers at Activision and Red Octane to ensure the tiny game captures the spirit of the original.

Expect the pocket Guitar Hero Caribiner to hit major retailers such as Target, KB Toys and Toys ‘R’ Us by early March for just $14.99.

No release date or pricing was revealed, but I’d say we’ll see it this Fall, so EA can take full advantage of the 2008 holiday season. Stay tuned for more details.

When I came across this Guitar Hero controller made out of LEGO blocks, I was impressed. But once I found out it was fully-functional, I was blown away.

Built by LEGO fanatic David McNeely (aka Blue Star LEGOs), this is the third in his series of working Guitar Hero controllers.

Modeled after a Fender Geddy Lee Jazz four-string Bass guitar, the controller uses the electronic guts of a standard GH guitar, placed delicately inside of a LEGO body.

Every part of the controller works just like the original, including the fret buttons, strum bar, whammy bar and control buttons.

Now all David needs to do is build a complete Rock Band LEGO edition. You can check out more photos of David’s impressive creations over in this Flickr collection.
