As you can see, the Eva Gundam takes his color scheme and overall parts design from its dad, while he got her mom’s lanky frame and bad posture, not to mention her short temper, i.e. a Berserk mode.

Using a “genetic algorithm,” YouTuber 99munimuni trained his digital Gundams to walk on their own. It’s an interesting evolutionary process, watching these imposing mechs flail around as they try and figure out how to amble about. See what I mean in this fascinating (and often comical) training video the Gundams attempt to walk without faceplanting (be sure to leave closed captions on):

Apparently, it took about two weeks of heavy-duty CPU churning for his computer-generated Gundam to learn how to walk. In the mean time, he filled in the long hours with a bunch of other primitive looking ‘bots walking about and swinging from swings. Why? Why not?

The new robot is an upgrade from the nearly 7-foot-tall bot he previously built. A 13-foot-tall bot is impressive, but it is only an interim design apparently. After this bot, Sakamoto plans to build a new one that is 26-feet-tall with a cockpit. Ultimately, he wants to go to 59-feet tall. Unfortunately, there’s no video yet of the new robot, but here’s a clip of Hajime 33, the big ‘bots predecessor.

And here’s a brief history of the Hajime robots, which started out at less than a foot tall.

If you are wondering, that 59-foot tall robot would be a 1:1 Gundam size bot, like the stationary one in currently being reassembled in Japan – except this one could actually walk. That would be awesome. If he is successful, I hope he builds an Atlas Mech after that. I want one with jet packs and a rail gun on each arm please.

It was made by graphic designer/creative director/visual spice master Taras Lesko, and it is truly an epic feast for the eyes.

Taras put together this time-lapse video of the build showing how it was assembled from 750 sheets of paper, and weighs in at about 10 pounds total. Not bad for a 7 foot-tall robot with a jet pack, eh?

Photographer darwinfish105 shot these images of the chopped-up Gundam, currently on display in Japan. The crime scene tape around the perimeter of his dismemberment is a nice touch.

I’m hoping that Gundam’s disassembly is only temporary, and that he’s en route to other locations around the world for all to enjoy. But I have a bad feeling that Gundam is down for the count, and this may be your last chance to get a gander at the massive mech.

What you’re looking at here is the brand-spanking-new Gundam Illumination Ashtray. Based on either the head of Zaku II (MS-06S) or Gouf (MS-07B), these ashtrays are just the thing for the Gundam fan/smoker who has everything. And I’m sure you know dozens of people who fit that bill, right?

They’re designed for use in your car, are easy to clean out, and even offers LED illumination so you can see where you’re stubbing out your cigarette butts.

Personally, if I did smoke, I’d rather have one that looks like a complete Mobile Suit, with all its weapons, instead of just a decapitated one. But if you don’t care, you can get your hands on one over at StrapyaWorld for about $35 (USD).

This jaw-dropping creation is a replica of the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam from Gundam SEED. What it lacks in color it more than makes up for in detail, particularly on its head and fingers.

I don’t know who made this or if this is it’s finished state – aside from being unpainted, the right shin seems to be damaged – all I know is that I can’t stop looking at it.

While other Japanese have been busy building another classic robot statue, and South Koreans are building a gigantic robot statue of their own, this orange Gundam copycat is being built in a theme park in Sichuan, China. It might just be the angle of the photograph, but Chinese Gundam looks like he needs to work on his upper body.

Sure, this model is only a 1/12th size replica, but that still means that it stands almost 5 feet (1.5m) tall and weighs 77 pounds (35kg) when assembled . The HY2M Hyper Hybrid Model mech was produced for the 30th anniversary of the franchise, and offers fully poseable arms, legs, head and even its fingers are jointed. It also comes with multiple guns and a lightsaber blade you can put in his hand to really intimidate your guests.

As you can see from the pile of parts in the gallery above, the “some assembly required” on the manual is a bit of an understatement. I’d expect that putting this thing together would take more time than a set of dressers from IKEA.

But if you’ve got the patience, and you’re willing to do a little Japanese-to-English translation, you can order one of these limited-edition replicas from the Bandai shop for ¥315,000 (appx. $3800 USD). Extravagant, yes. But a small price to pay to have Gundam keeping watch over your home, no?

This phone will be released by Japan’s third biggest mobile phone carrier, SoftBank Mobile, who has 25 million subscribers. The phone itself is based on a Sharp 945SH, which has 3.2-inch VGA display, 12.1MP CCD camera, video recording in 720p, digital TV tuner, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and is waterproof. That’s actually not bad for a basic cell phone. Do I want one, though? Nope, I’ll stick to my old SonyEricsson Cybershot K810i.

That’s exactly what these guys did with their leftover bits and pieces. It took over 250 man-hours to build the RG (Recycle Grade) RX-78-2 Gundam, which measures in at nearly 10-feet tall. Of course, it was built almost entirely from the spare plastic runners and part trees from smaller Gundam model kits.

This is his latest papercraft project which took him over 2 months to construct. In total, Taras used 175 pages of paper to make this thing. It includes over 500 parts.

This huge papercraft model is based on the Freedom Gundam, seed #7, 1/100 scale model, by Bandai. He constructed a 3D model from this 1/100 scale model and then, converted it into a papercraft model. Check out the timelapse video of him building paper Freedom Gundam.

Giant Gundam holds a beam saber in his right hand, which will start to glow when it gets dark. The only thing that would be more impressive would be if it could actually move around. Maybe next year.

The enormous Gundam statue will be on display from July 24th, 2010, to January 10th, 2011, in East Shizuoka Square. Now that’s good news indeed. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to go to Japan to check him out, so like most of you, I’ll have to admire him from afar. Bandai, it’s time for a giant Gundam worldwide tour!

The Gundam Cafe is located at the “newly designed Akihabara area accessible from the JR Station at the Denkigai Exit and just below the Yamanote line,” so if you’re ever in the area be sure to drop by, because I would kill for a chance to be there. I was pretty disappointed when I learned that the Gundam statue was going to be dismantled. I kind wished that Godzilla went postal on Tokyo for that, but no worries, Gundam is coming back with a vengeance!

But not in Tokyo this time. Gundam will be erected again this year in July, just in time for the actual date of the 30th anniversary. It will be in Shizuoka and it will have a “beam laser”, which, in my book, is a lightsaber. The lightsaber will glow during the night. Despite its short lifespan, the giant Gundam in Tokyo was visited by almost 4 million people last year. This time, Gundam will be standing for 6 months, so maybe more of us will have a chance to see it this time.

These Gundam-inspired ballpoint pens are being released as part of the 30th anniversary celebration of the series, and come in a variety of different styles. While I’ve always enjoyed the graceful, destructive force of a beam rifle, I have to say I’d really like to show up to all of my meetings carrying a pen that looks like a 280 mm Zaku bazooka. I only wish it would fire tiny little rocket-propelled grenades at the guy who creates a 50-page PowerPoint deck that actually has only two bullet points that actually mean anything.

Gundam Ballpoint pen weapons sell for ¥990 (appx. $11 USD) each. You can grab the entire collection over at StrapyaWorld now, but you’d better move fast before they sell out.

It turns out that despite the dismantling of the Giant Gundam his head still lives on. It’s sort of like that movie They Saved Hitler’s Brain, where they kept the evil Furor’s head alive in a jar. Or was that a Futurama episode I’m thinking of? Now I can’t remember. Either way, it doesn’t matter.

What matters is that the big Gundam head has been decapitated from its body and surfaced as booth dressing for Bandai Namco’s booth at the 2009 Tokyo Game Show.

That one’s from shuichi. Apparently the enemy admitted that the puny missile was all he had, thereby enraging RX-78-2. Super Saiya- oh wait.

And that’s from the equally mighty Wikipedia. The unworthy opponent has been dispatched, and the people are thanking their savior. All before lunchtime.
