hey n00b, here’s how you install os x on an sd card

sd-osx-1

Macworld Senior Editor Roman Loyola posted a video guide showing how one can install Apple’s OS X Leopard on an SD card. The new Macbook Pros (save for the 17-in) come with an SD card slot, so you can install apps on the SD card and boot from it if for instance you want to perform repairs on the internal…

nes controller doorbell: I’d hit that

nes-controller-doorbell-1

To whoever made this fun doorbell: wouldn’t it be more awesome if you had to punch in the Konami code before it rang? Requiring the code will also deter naughty neighbors who’ll no doubt be compelled to play with the doorbell. Or just press it at least once. I know I would. I mean, it’s a controller tacked on a…

are you a debian nerd? then you can play nes on your palm pre, double literally

prenes

Do you know what a chroot is? No? Then let’s file this under Cool Shit We Don’t Understand, because I have no freaking idea either: A bunch of cool nerds at Pre Dev Wiki (motto: “Let’s open this beast up”) have managed to coerce the newly released iPhone rival Palm Pre to run the popular NES emulator FCEUltra. They then decide…

this guitar hero uses a real guitar

guitar hero mod instrument

This isn’t about being amazing at Guitar Hero; lots of people are amazing Guitar Hero players. No, this little patch of the internet is dedicated to being amazing at doing the obvious (and I mean that in a good way). It’s Guitar Hero… with a guitar.

The genius of this particular mod (beyond the fact that it’s a guitar) lies…

super nintendo pc casemod runs 32-bit os in a 16-bit box

snes_pc_casemod

Check out this clever casemod which combines the shell of an old SNES console with the brains of a modern PC.

Modders quangDX and DuPPs took an old Super Nintendo they had lying around, splayed open its guts and married it with the internals of an Acer Aspire One A150 laptop, then dubbed it the aaSNES1 (is that pronounced assness-one?).…

the future is now: diy gesture-controlled tetris

tetris glove motion control

If this year’s E3 is any indication (and it’s like, the indication), then motion controls are the future. If you’re cunning and good with wires, you can even experience the future now.

This is pretty basic–as strange as it is to refer to motion controlled gaming as basic–considering this glove is just a holder for an accelerometer, so that the tilt…

that’s how she rolls: girl builds custom katamari controller

diy trackball sphere katamari damacy controller

Hackster Queen (of All Cosmos, naturally) Kellbot has created what may become the ultimate Katamari Damacy experience: a spherical controller, so you can roll while you roll. It’s enough to make me want to learn how to wire things together.

With a metal ball, an optical mouse, bits of PS2 controllers, and a little help from Arduino, Kellbot put together the…

make your own tiny starship enterprise from spare parts

starship_enterprise_tiny

I just got back from watching the glorious new Star Trek movie, so I must have the Enterprise on the brain. And while this tiny Starship Enterprise isn’t quite as dramatic as the mammoth star vessel from the film, it’s just as cool in my book. Maybe even more so.

Built by a guy going by the name “Wolf” (no, not…

thumb callouses are so over: super mario bros controlled with music

Marc Sciglimpaglia and Phoenix Toews super mario bros hack music

I love Mario, but even I have to admit that the old school games are, well, old. I’ve played ‘em a million times, and even though Super Mario Bros is a classic, it’s always fun to spice it up a little. I just never thought I’d see a musically-driven Mario Bros.

You read that right–this Super Mario Bros shuns the traditional controller and…

pac-man roomba eats all your dirt pellets

pac-man roomba mod robot

As devices go, the Roomba is pretty cool on its own. It’s a useful machine and a fun toy all in one, so dressing it up can seem a little gratuitous. But if you turn your Roomba into Pac-Man… well, that’s just awesome. Especially if you use hilarious and appropriate sound effects.

With cleverly placed and wired yellow LEDs, a…

psp-3000 hacked: one small step for hackers, one giant step for homebrew

psp3000-hackzorzed

And so it has come to pass: a group of developers calling themselves Team Typhoon recently achieved a breakthrough in hacking the PSP-3000 via member Davee’s ChickHEN Homebrew Enabler. As proof, a Team Typhoon member posted a video of ChickHEN at work on YouTube, adding, “This proves that the code survives a reboot and the system software and MAC address…

iknow where you are: ipod nano gps hack

ipod-nano-gps-1

Engineer Benjamin Kokes used to work for the now-defunct GPS company Nemerix. While he was there, he started working on a GPS peripheral for the iPod nano as a personal challenge. From the looks of it, he still has quite a ways to go, but at least he has shown that it’s feasible.

Kokes used “a reference design board containing…

the 8-bit computer is back, ready to hack, and plays nes games to boot

8_bit_computer

When you think of 8-bit computers, classics like the Atari 400/800, the Commodore 64 and the Apple II probably come to mind. But there’s a new kid on the block that hopes to bring 8-bit computing back – this time for the hacker community.

This bare-bones looking “TV Computer” is based on the same 1MHz 6502 processor chip that powered…

ipwned: flaw in ipod touch 2g makes it “pwned for life” [or... tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak]

ipwnedtouch1

The iPhone Dev Team recently revealed that a fatal flaw in the iPod Touch 2G’s boot ROM makes the device open to jailbreak regardless of any firmware updates that Apple may release. In other words, Apple can do nothing to jailbreak-proof the iPod Touch 2G.

An entry in the iPhone wiki explains the exploit as well as additional info. Apparently…
