Now in all my research of the old Apple PowerMac G4, I can’t find anything in the spec sheets that mention a 49cc, 2-stroke petrol engine. I must have missed that part somewhere. As a matter of fact, this is the first Mac I’ve ever seen that measures its speed in MPH, not MHz.

This ridiculous mod combines an old G4 with the guts of a tiny motorbike. The MOTO G4 “BURAN” can hit a top speed around 30+ miles per hour. It’s got front and rear disk brakes, and a windscreen made from a hacked up original Apple Pro keyboard.

Apparently the Buran is just the first vehicle created for the new MOTO G4 “extreme sport”, which involves turning old G3 and G4 cases into high-speed deathmobiles.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t figure out a way to keep the computer functional. I think it would have been cool if they figured out a way to do that, and mounted an LCD monitor into the handlebars. Maybe they can do that for the MOTO G4 2.0.

God, that seat looks uncomfortable.

As far as hacks and mods go, retrofitting a decommissioned hand grenade with mp3 playing guts is on the top of the clever and creative list. But as far as real world application is concerned? Well, I wouldn’t be whipping this thing out at work anytime soon. Or school. And definitely not on the train.

The mp3 grenade is Matt from NYC Resistor’s baby, as well as his childhood dream – or so he claims. I really can’t imagine grenade + music = smiley face entered his head as a child.

Wherever or whenever the idea came from, Matt really did bring it to life – but not before giving his workmates a scare after forgetting to mention a box of hand grenades would be arriving at their office. After clearing things up, Matt got to work. First, he fitted the grenade’s pinhole with a 1/8-inch jack. Then, after hacksawing the body open, he replaced its grenadey guts with a Sansa 2GB mp3 player, which apparently called for “a session of intense soldering onto very tiny soldering points.”

A few legally purchased mp3 tracks later and viola – instant mp3 grenade.

This extra-loud alarm clock gets its power from a couple of 140-decibel electric horns. A relay, a 12-volt laptop power supply and a whiff of solder later, and this cheap alarm clock was transformed into the most ear-shattering alarm clock you’ll ever hear.

This invention reminds me of an episode in The Big Bang Theory where Leslie Winkle dips a banana into a container filled with liquid nitrogen, smashes the instantly frozen fruit with a hammer and then picks up the bits and chunks and puts them on top of her cereal. Why? Because she couldn’t find a knife to slice the banana. Overkill a la nerd. The Tesla turbine pencil sharpener is just that, a Tesla turbine + a hand-cranked pencil sharpener. The turbine saves you a few calories by turning the crank for you. Yes, kinda like electric sharpeners.

If you don’t know what a Tesla turbine is – I didn’t until 5 minutes ago – it’s a turbine that has a Wikipedia entry. Go read about it. Okay, okay! You lazy-ass…beloved, esteemed, revenue-generating reader. It’s a bladeless turbine that relies on the boundary layer effect to spin. The turbine is made of a set of disks, air is applied to the edge of the disks, the disk spins very fast. Unfortunately, the turbine doesn’t create lightning or bursts in flames or anything cool. It just spins. Here’s the hacked sharpener in action, as demonstrated by its inventor. If you’re interested in how the gadget was created, you’re in for a treat. Folks like me who just want to see the thing work can skip to around 5:40. Actually skip 7:00; the device fails at 5:40.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I desperately wished that the sharpener would eat the pencil in like half a second, or reduce it to sawdust, or even just fail and blow up, but apparently a sharpener being operated at 2,200 rpm isn’t all that different from one that’s being hand-cranked by a 3rd grader. So why did I even bother sharing this with you? To teach you this: with science, anything is possible. You’re welcome.

I’m not sure why this R2-D2 has 8 video game consoles built into its innards, but I still like it. Maybe it’s just the very fact that I’ve never seen an R2 unit with more than 20 game controllers connected to its front, or maybe it’s just the sheer absurdity of the thing that has me captivated. Either way, I bet you can’t say you have one of these in your media room.

While there aren’t many details about the heritage of this mod, what we can see from the picture is that the little droid is loaded up with a Dreamcast, an Xbox, an N64, an Atari 2600, a SEGA Saturn, an NES, an SNES and a PlayStation. It’s also got a projector and sound system built-in for good measure.

Though R2-D2 may have been designed as a utility droid, I think he’s finally found his real purpose – gaming droid.

What happens when you splay open the guts of a classic NES console, and wire up a bunch of knobs, buttons and a patch panel? This, of course.

Not to be outdone by the classic Atari Video Music synth, Pete Edwards of Casper Electronics put together this highly modded Nintendo Entertainment System capable of cranking out a wide variety of hypnotic and just plain weird video patterns.

By adding a patch bay and connecting them to various locations on the video processing chips, the images on screen can be modified by interconnecting the patch points or by feeding in external signals.

You can also achieve similar effects from your NES by smashing it with a hammer while plugged in – for at least 10 seconds. Check out the complete worklog here.

What might television look like in hell? Maybe a bit like this.

This incredibly lo-fi SatanVision television set was designed by David Forbes. It’s outputs of an unbelievably crappy 128×96 resolution image, and all of the pixels are red. Here it is playing the only video game they have in the underworld, Pong. Oh, and they only have one paddle down there, too.

And thanks to the low wattage red LEDs, it’s virtually useless in the daylight. Good thing that there is no daylight in hell.

All kidding aside, it took David months and over $1000 of his hard-earned dough (and an entire roll of duct tape) to build this intentionally crummy display. To pull it off, he built out an array of 8×8 LED panels he found over on eBay, and then built a custom controller circuit which converts the television signal into something you can display on the LEDs.

Want to build your own SatanVision TV? David provides a full set of schematics, PCB artwork and firmware for the controller over at his site, Cathode Corner.

Here’s a great external hard drive for fans of the original Nintendo Entertainment System. These NES cartridges have had their guts ripped out and replaced with high-capacity modern hard drives.

The guys over at 8-Bit Memory take retro NES carts and retrofit them with USB hard drives that you can use with any modern PC or Mac.

I think I’d load up all of my favorite 8-bit emulators and games onto the drive so I could take them anywhere I go. As an added bonus, you won’t have to blow on the edge of this cartridge to get your games to load.

The basic model ($119.99 USD) comes with a 250GB hard drive, but 8-Bit Memory will make custom drives with capacities of 320GB, 400GB, 500GB or 750GB for an extra charge. And they’ll be happy to dig up your favorite NES game to build a custom enclosure just for you. Head on over to 8-Bit Memory’s Etsy shop to get your hands on one.

Got a spare Nintendo Power Glove sitting around? Why not do something cool with it like turning it into a modern musical instrument?

That’s what synth hacker Denkitribe did when he rewired an old Famicom/NES Power Glove to control an Arduino-based controller circuit. The Arduino translates finger movements into MIDI CC messages, which in turn control a digital synthesizer. Want to hear what it sounds like? Then check out this video clip…

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The initial prototype still uses the old-school ultrasonic microphone sensors from the original Power Glove, but Denkitribe plans on eventually upgrading the glove to use modern accelerometer technology. But once he does that, I doubt he’ll be able to play any more Super Glove Ball or Bad Street Brawler anymore. Oh, the things we do in the name of hacking.

Felix Domke, who’s also known on the Internets as famous console hacker tmbinc, recently announced that he has ported the SNES9x GX Super Nintendo emulator – originally made for the Wii and the Gamecube – to the Xbox 360. Domke adds that the emulator runs “on the bare metal”, which hackaday interprets as direct hardware emulation, i.e. no loader or any other software is needed to run the emulator.

The ported program still doesn’t have a user interface, but it’s working alright. Or not. I leave it up to you to decide if the demo below is indeed running on a 360. +1 to anyone who tells me the artist of the awesome chiptune playing in the background.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

This is actually the first time that I’ve heard of a homebrew program, much less an emulator, for Microsoft’s latest console. Even though I don’t have my own Xbox 360, I’m still interested. More videos – with concrete proof – and a how-to please tmbinc!

I can’t believe this isn’t the first time that a rubber band machine gun has been featured on this blog. Dammit. I wasn’t even aware that rubber band machine guns existed until I read this article at JapanProbe. One day I’ll be better than you boss *sniff*. Meanwhile let’s take a look at this homemade, not-so-new-news-at-technabob rubber band machine gun.

The gun can fire up to 200 rubber bands in rapid succession, and yes, reloading is a bitch. It was made by a certain Mr. Nakamura, who has actually written a book about making rubber band guns. Here he is showing off his gun to an extremely overjoyed old man:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Mr. Nakamura is of course, a member of the Japan Rubber Band Gun Shooting Association. I’m not kidding:

If there’s any association worth joining, it’s that one. Of course the association’s name can also mean that members shoot at rubber band guns, but we’ve got video of Mr. Nakamura and his l33t rubber band gunnery:

Want to make your own RBMG? Here’s Mr. Nakamura’s online guide. It’s in Japanese of course.

Macworld Senior Editor Roman Loyola posted a video guide showing how one can install Apple’s OS X Leopard on an SD card. The new Macbook Pros (save for the 17-in) come with an SD card slot, so you can install apps on the SD card and boot from it if for instance you want to perform repairs on the internal hard drive. It’s a very straightforward guide, a format-this-and-install-that affair, but nonetheless helpful for non-techies.

Without fiddling with a Leopard installer’s disk image and throwing some stuff out, you’ll need at least an 8 Gb SD card to make a portable Leopard installation.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Wasn’t that easy? Now all you need to do is wreck your internal disk so you’ll have a reason to boot from the SD! I’m kidding. And before anyone asks, no, you can’t boot a PC with this card.

The modder fiddled with a wireless doorbell system and placed the receiver inside the iconic controller.

Have an iPhone 3G running OS 3.0? Ready to pick your own mobile carrier? Well now you can release your iPhone 3G from its shackles.

iPhone Dev-Team’s Ultrasn0w carrier unlock hack works on iPhone 3G models, but doesn’t yet work on the 3GS. It’ll take you just a few minutes to go through all of the steps needed to unlock your iPhone, and free it from your current mobile carrier.

To make it work, you’ll first need to jailbreak your iPhone using redsn0w or PwnageTool 3.0, then follow the instructions over on the iPhone Dev-Team website and your iPhone 3G will be free at last. For now at least.

As is always the case with such PWN3GE tools, you take your iPhone’s life into your own hands. Don’t blame me if you brick your phone, or if AT&T sends their goons over to your house to make you pay up on your 2-year contract.

Do you know what a chroot is? No? Then let’s file this under Cool Shit We Don’t Understand, because I have no freaking idea either: A bunch of cool nerds at Pre Dev Wiki (motto: “Let’s open this beast up”) have managed to coerce the newly released iPhone rival Palm Pre to run the popular NES emulator FCEUltra. They then decide to taunt us lesser mortals by posting instructions for the hack, knowing full well that we can’t read their language. Programming language that is.

Mounting Debian on the Pre is one thing, but typing a command in the damn chroot before and after playing a game? Good god. And just to rub rock salt onto our fresh, fresh wounds, they made a demo video too. *sniff* ‘Snot fair.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

On second thought, I actually don’t care because I can easily have NES, SNES, GBA and PSX emulators on my PSP all at the same time. Ha! Take that chroot.

The genius of this particular mod (beyond the fact that it’s a guitar) lies in the way the guitar is utilized. Not only does the conversion not affect (much) the guitar’s primary use–you can still play it–but when used as a controller, it operates in much the same way as the actual controller. Press the frets on one, press the frets on the other.

There are plans to expand the project further, as though this isn’t cool enough.

Check out this clever casemod which combines the shell of an old SNES console with the brains of a modern PC.

Modders quangDX and DuPPs took an old Super Nintendo they had lying around, splayed open its guts and married it with the internals of an Acer Aspire One A150 laptop, then dubbed it the aaSNES1 (is that pronounced assness-one?).

They even threw in some LEGO block circuit board mounts for good measure. The aaSNES1 is a veritable Frankenstein’s monster of a computer.

I especially love how they managed to mount a slot-loading DVDRW drive inside of the Super Mario World cartridge! I had no idea a DVD would fit inside of one of those. Actually, it turns out that the guys actually didn’t have quite enough room inside the UK model SNES cartridge, but they managed to cut things apart enough to get the drive to work. They even rigged the eject button to eject the DVD – nice touch!

While the aaSNES1 casemod looks pretty good already, the modders still plan to tighten up their work further, adding internal speakers, clean up the DVDRW installation, make sure the cooling works (that’s a good plan), install some case lighting, and just generally clean up the cabling. Frankly, all I think they need to do is change the name.

This is pretty basic–as strange as it is to refer to motion controlled gaming as basic–considering this glove is just a holder for an accelerometer, so that the tilt and motion of the player’s hand and wrist is used to manipulate the pieces.

You could also just play WiiWare’s Tetris Party, but that’s fancy Tetris, and sometimes you just want simplicity. Simplicity and a wrist wrapped in wiring.

With a metal ball, an optical mouse, bits of PS2 controllers, and a little help from Arduino, Kellbot put together the roll-a-riffic controller of all Katamari lover’s dreams. Now if only we could get that in, say, a giant beach ball form.

Kellbot calls the controller “a hella fun way” to experience Katamari Damacy, and the video footage makes me want to agree. It also looks hella accurate, while we’re throwing qualifiers around.
