Benjamin Bachmeier’s HTPC set up is an amalgam of brands and technologies. The most obvious inspiration of course is Apple’s iPhone 4, after which the beautifully made case is modeled. But the 40″ screen on what Benjamin calls the iTableous isn’t a touchscreen, it’s a Toshiba LED LCD monitor, which in turn is connected to a PS3 and a Hackintosh that also runs Windows 7.

Bachmeier went to great lengths to supersize the iPhone 4 both proportionally and in terms of functionality. For example, the iTableous has a 5.7-megapixel HD camera right where the front-facing camera on a real iPhone 4 would be. The speakers are also situated at the lower end of the case, again in the same spot as a real iPhone 4′s speakers. The iPhone’s sleep button also serves as the iTableous’ power switch. Other notable parts include the Home button, which hides a 30-pin connector to connect a real iPhone (and other iOS devices) and the micro-SIM cover, which you can open to take a peek at the guts of the PC inside.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Speaking of the guts, the iTableous is powered by a 2 GHz Zotac Ionitx with 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD. Connections include a line-in port, one USB 2.0 port (just like an Apple computer!), a SuperDrive, two HDMI ports and a DVB-T antenna cable. The iTableous makes up for its lack of multi-touch capabilities by its elegant swinging function (aided by an accelerometer,) which lets Benjamin use it in a more traditional viewing set up.

Check out Benjamin’s website for more pictures and info. I wonder if he can use something like the Duo to add touch functionality to the iTableous.

Got an old N64 lying around? Well if you have the time, patience and talent, you could turn it into a modern-day PC like modder Polvorito has done.

He picked up this old Nintendo 64 at a flea market for about 20 bucks, then gutted it to provide the shell for his new home theater PC. Since his main goal was to build a wireless PC for his living room to stream media and surf the internet from, he didn’t go for the most powerful computer, instead going for something that would fit neatly inside the chassis of the N64.

He decided to go with a Zotac ION ITX motherboard, which conveniently crams sound, graphics, CPU, GPU, Wi-Fi, and HDMI and optical outputs on a single compact board. It’s based on the nVidia ION chipset, and runs an Intel Atom N330 CPU. He wanted the box to be dead silent, so he even went with a 30GB solid state drive for storage. While he originally had hoped he could run fanless, he had to keep a small fan in there to prevent the CPU from overheating. Still, it’s way better than anything I could do.

Polvorito has actually installed OSX on the mutant N64, making it the first official Nintendo 64-based Hackintosh I’ve seen. You can check out the full work log over at The Best Case Scenario.

The guys at 1 Block Off the Grid needed a high-end Mac to run Adobe After Effects, but instead of buying an expensive Mac Pro, they decided to build their own computer. Normally that would be nothing to write home about, but the 1BOG staff really put the hack in Hackintosh. Here’s their computer:

The Mac (Pro)-in-the-box is running Snow Leopard, and has a Gigabyte motherboard, an XFX Radeon HD 5770 graphics card, a 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i5 processor, 1 TB Western Digital Hard Drive, 4GB (2x 2GB) Corsair RAM, 500-watt OCZ power supply, and a DVD burner. The ‘case’ is the Amazon box that the parts came in. Awesome.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The total cost? A little more than $800 (USD) in parts, a far cry from the $2500 price of the cheapest Mac Pro available. $2000 iMac, which as it is has a weaker graphics card, but a slightly better processor. The iMac also comes with a pretty (and pretty huge) 27-in screen, but I don’t think that’s worth $1200. Plus you can draw on the Mac-in-the-box case! Check out the 1BOG blog for more info on how they built the cardboard Hackintosh.

With Apple and Nokia trying to bury each other in lawsuits, Nikkanen must have been aware of the irony when he posted a video on YouTube showing his nerdy (albeit useless) achievement: an N900 running Apple’s OS X 10.3, aka Panther – with the help of a pre-release version of PearPC.

On the other hand, I don’t think we can really say that the smartphone was “running” OSX. It was more like crawling:

I was half-expecting to see the phone explode or melt down. Still goes to show that today’s portable devices can be powerful enough to install a “full” operating system. Obviously the interface needs to be modified, but a full OS does give you legit web browsing, multitasking, and you’ll be able to browse your files and folders *hint hint*.

So here’s the story: Will Urbina needed to learn Final Cut but didn’t own a Mac. He could buy one, sure, but when you’re a modder, that’s just not how you roll. When the situation is complicated by your dislike of actual Mac products, you’ve got a real problem on your hands. But Urbina, for all his Mac hatred (hiss! boo!), seems a pretty clever fellow, and when he came across an old Xbox devkit, he figured his problems were a few months of work away from being solved.

Using that devkit case and an EFi-X dongle to allow him to boot to multiple operating systems, Urbina built what he calls the OX Xbox Pro: a custom system that combines the Mac OS and software he needs, and the Microsoft sensibilities he prefers. Urbina is not without a sense of humor, though–that’s clear from the little touches, like this:

Not-quite Mac, just like the mod.

Want a small Mac, but like the look of the beefy aluminum Mac Pro tower? Too impatient to wait for Apple to make a metal Mac Mini, this one modder decided to craft his own.

While not running on official Apple hardware, the Hackintosh Jr. gets its looks from the big tower Macs, but at 5.5″ (h) x 7″ (w) x 5″ (d), it’s not much bigger than a Mac Mini (although it is quite a bit taller).

Modder Widefault (the same guy who gave us the Geiger Counter PC and the Lunchbox Firewall), built the Hackintosh Jr. from hand-shaped mesh and sheet aluminum. At the heart of the Mac Hack Jr. is an Aaeon GENE-9310 sub-compact mobo, sporting an Intel Core Duo T2500 processor, 2 GB of RAM, integrated Wi-Fi connectivity and a 2.5″ Seagate Momentus hard drive.

Of course, when I first heard the name “Hackintosh Junior,” I thought that Widefault was talking about this system…
