This giant illuminated dragon looks like the lovechild of Tron and Burning Man given wings. If you were lucky, you would have seen this beast on Saturday, when artists Teddy Lo and Ryan Doyle showed off their art car at New York’s Robot Heart-O-Ween. It’s called Gon KiRin, which means “light dragon.”

It must have been a beautiful sight to behold in the dark of night, if these images do it any justice. The vehicle measures about 53 ft long and 23 ft tall and started off as a 1963 Dodge dump truck. It took over 2,460 ft of LED fixtures to get the effect you see and if that’s not enough, there’s also a DJ booth, a hydraulic neck for more dragon-ness and it can seat more then 20 people. Oh and thanks to a flamethrower, it breaths fire. If you have a dragon car, you need fire right?

If it looks familiar, this fire-breathing light dragon also made an appearance at Burning Man in 2010. This truly is one amazing-looking art car.

Today is Halloween, so all the kids and a bunch of adults will be out tonight rambling around begging for candy to eat. It’s also time for Google’s Halloween doodle on their home page. Google often has doodles that you can’t figure out without reading the alt text, but this one is pretty straightforward.

The Google name is carved into six gigantic pumpkins. Several of these massive pumpkins weigh over 1,000 pounds. Google workers spent eight hours carving them into designs that look like the letters needed to spell “Google.” I like the fifth letter the best myself, but the only one I could have carved was the giant “l.”

Check out the time-lapse video above to see all the carving and watch for Googlers in costume making cameos.

From what I gather, Minecraft is already a pretty scary game on it’s own, but this mod by Minecraft Forum member/Dr. Who fan/general cruel person a_dizzle makes being a blocky miner and crafter a lot scarier. The mod is called Weeping Angels, after the Dr. Who aliens of the same name. And yep, this mod puts the bastards in the game.

Similar to the Boo from Super Mario Bros. 3 (and subsequent games), the Weeping Angels can only move when they’re not being observed. So as long as you keep your eyes on them, you’re good. But once they do get the chance to move they’ll move. Quickly and noiselessly. Actually the mod is quite buggy, as there will be instances when the Weeping Angels will cheat and still move even if you’re looking at them. Which makes them even scarier. Thankfully you can kill them using an iron pickaxe.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Combine these with the Endermen – who go crazy in the opposite manner; i.e. they go berserk if you look at them – and Minecraft makes Resident Evil seem like a Saturday morning cartoon. Get into the Halloween spirit and download the Weeping Angels mod from the Minecraft Forum.

Too old to dress up and get free candy this Halloween? Well, you can always steal candy from your kid’s bag. If you use OnLive, the cloud video game service has a special treat for you this Halloween weekend if you are staying at home.

The service is giving away four games this weekend, until Monday. The games include Amnesia: The Dark Descent, F.E.A.R. 3, Metro 2033 and Orcs Must Die. Not sure about the rest, but F.E.A.R. 3 looks like it is worth it alone.

Just sign up, install the OnLive app, pick your free game, Select “Get Game” and a 3-Day Rental for the price of $0.00 (USD). Then when you are finished with those games, on October 31st you can get another game for free if you’re a fan of OnLive’s Facebook page. The title has not been announced yet though. This is a great Halloween treat from the company. Looks like a lot of people will be inside playing games this year.

Last-Minute Costume Idea: Cut a Hole in Your Torso with Two iPad 2s

If you still don’t have a Halloween costume, you’re probably left to the dregs of the random ill-fitting Scooby Doo and Teletubbies costumes at your local Wal-Mart. But if you and a buddy can spare your iPad 2s for the night, you could end up being the life of the party.

By taking a pair of iPad 2s and strapping them to his chest and back using duct tape, Technabob reader Mark Rober managed to make it look like he had a huge gaping hole in his torso. The trick is actually pretty simple to pull off. Just connect the two devices via Wi-Fi (or a pocket hotspot), and turn on a FaceTime chat between the two.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The one in the back uses its front-facing camera to capture what’s behind you, and the one in the front grabs what’s in front. They each show the others live video on-screen, creating an awesome illusion that makes it look like you can see right through your body. While I’ve seen this idea done before, it’s always required a ton of build time and hacking. This idea only requires a couple of iPad 2s, some duct tape and a Wi-Fi network.

Of course, it’s not exactly the cheapest Halloween costume, but if you do have a couple of iPad 2s lying around, it’s actually pretty easy. And if you have a few iPhone 4s on hand, you could even create a bullet-riddled corpse effect.

[Thanks for the tip, Mark!]

There’s only a couple of days before Halloween, so if you haven’t already picked out your costume, you might want to get it together now. If you happen to be a fan of Inspector Gadget, here’s a fun idea to bring that costume to life.

Using a variety of found objects and hardware, Laura (aka prixprix) created this awesome Inspector Gadget costume, complete with functional flying contraption. And while it doesn’t actually achieve lift-off at any point, the rotor is actually motorized, so maybe she could get off the ground with enough of an updraft. Here, check it out:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Pretty nifty, eh? If you want to give it a try for yourself, Laura has documented her build over on Instructables for you to follow for yourself. Anyone who can actually get theirs to propel them into the air will get a gold star in my book. Go, go, Gadget!

Halloween is just right around the corner. If you haven’t gotten around to making or renting out a costume for this year, then you’d better go get one right now (although you might get stuck with some duds; it is just a few days until the ghouliest day of the year, after all.)

The only pumpkins I’ve ever managed to carve were ones with foolish grins and crooked smiles. And I used to think they were pretty decent, until I saw what Ray Villafane managed to do with his pumpkin.

Working with regular-sized pumpkins is already enough of a challenge for most people. But Ray did a more than spectacular job carving these creepy zombies and demons bursting out from their pumpkin grave from the world’s largest pumpkin. And when we say “world’s largest,” we really do mean the world’s largest and heaviest, as it weighed in at 1,818.5 pounds.

The giant pumpkin carving will be on display at the New York Botanical Garden until month’s end so drop by and take a few shots, if you happen to be in the area.

This is more of a sci-fi cosplay costume than a Halloween costume, but if you’d wear this over the weekend, it would probably amaze anyone you’d come across. This awesome costume was made by Maker extraordinaire Shawn Thorsson, best known for those incredible HALO costumes (his Predator wasn’t half bad either).

It’s based on Isaac Clarke’s Engineering RIG Suit from Dead Space 2. He had initially only made the helmet, but he mentions that it was freaking people out, so he decided to complete a whole custom costume to go with the headgear. It’s kind of amazing how he was able to complete it, and he didn’t go by half measures.

I remember this fight I had with my sister when we were much younger. It was around Halloween, and we were fighting over who would get to wear the princess costume my mom had rented earlier. It was pretty close to the October 31st, so she only managed to bring one home. At the height of the fight, I remember yelling out at my sister: “You should probably go as yourself – a spoiled brat!”

And to help take those sentiments further – and in the literal sense – there’s the 3DPF Masks by REAL-f. These are custom-made and extremely realistic masks that could pass off as an authentic replica to your face. 3DPF stands for 3 Dimension Photo Forms, and they’re available as a mask or as a full bust of your head.

These masks are made by taking photos of your face from various angles and molding a three-dimensional copy from vinyl chloride resin. The method is so detailed, that even blood vessels and iris details are copied accurately onto the mask.

These masks or busts don’t come cheap either. The first mask will cost you a whopping $3,920 (USD), with each additional one priced at $780. Going for a bust will set you back $5,875, with each additional one priced at $1,960.

Halloween may still be over a month away, but it’s never too early to start figuring out how you’re going to scare the crap out of trick-or-treaters, right?

Well, if you’ve got $3500 to spare, have I got something for you! This animatronic door is one of the best scares I’ve seen in a while, and there’s one for sale right now over on Etsy.

As you can see from the photo above, this door has a nasty surprise hidden inside of it. Here, watch the video and you’ll see what I mean:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Nice effect, eh? Especially that part when it looks like the axe is chopping through the door, right? The effect is achieved with a 22-inch LCD monitor, along with a special DVD from Hi-Rez Designs which has DTMF tracks which cue the pneumatics behind the door at just the right time. They even offer up build instructions for customers who want to build one for themselves.

While you could try and build your own door, it’s probably way easier to pick up this one that’s already built over on Etsy, from the appropriately named “999deadpatricia”. And if you don’t have $3500 to spare, you could always just pick up the DVD, and just play that on a monitor (without the pneumatics).

I so want to replace my front door with this for Halloween this year.

Braiiiiiinnns… braaaaainsss, we all know the zombie mantra. I have found the perfect prop for those of you that plan to dress as a zombie this Halloween or if you are just really hungry for a giant brain made out of gummi stuff. There are a few downsides to this Giant Gummi Brain though.

The first downside is that it is bubble gum flavored. I mean seriously, what genius though that making a red brain that isn’t cherry flavored was a good idea. This is oblivious to the fact that a gummy brain needs to be gray anyhow. On the plus-side, the brain is nearly life-size. Honestly, it’s probably larger than the brains in most of the folks I know.

It’s gluten free and measures approximately 7.7″ (L) x 6.1″ (W) x 3″ (H), and the thing weighs in at about 7 pounds, which is way heavier than the real deal. The giant gummi brain can be yours for £19.99 (~$32 USD) over at Firebox. you can pre-order it right now with a ship date that is unknown. This would be easy to share amongst other zombies using the trusty Crovel to chop it up.

Halloween will be here before you know it, and Doctor Who fans are no doubt looking for something special to wear. Not that they need to use Halloween as an excuse of course. With just a bit of effort, maybe you can make your own version of this awesome Weeping Angel costume.

Of course, there’s no way that you can put yourself in a “Quantum-locked” state, so that you don’t exist in time and space and therefore can’t move when you are being observed, but at least you can look the part. Well, you could do your best to freeze when others look at you, I suppose.

This amazing costume comes from one of the users over at crafty_tardis and was actually made back in 2008. It would be awesome to wear this costume this year however, since the Weeping Angels will be coming back this season.

It takes a lot of work, but all of the steps seem fairly easy. You can check out all of the finer details over at crafty_tardis if you want to try your hand at it. But if I do see a Weeping Angel on Halloween night, I’m not taking any chances. I won’t blink, look away or run. I will be pounding dangerous statues that night with heavy objects. You have been warned.

If you’re wondering, it took him about 3 years to finish them. Wow, that’s completely insane. My last Halloween costume was a cheapo affair that I bought a few years ago. Papercraft versions of the costume were printed out and painstakingly detailed. Once this was done, a mold was created and then a cast was made out of urethane resin.

The helmets include LED lights, padding, and cooling fans! The costumes are hard to strap on, but the look is definitely awesome, and well worth the effort.

Greeting card illustrator Dan Liuzzi originally wanted to wear a giant version of his head for Halloween. Why? Who knows? Maybe he secretly thinks his head is too small, and Halloween gave him a great excuse to correct his anatomy, even for just one night. Anyway, his plans for a giant head had a small problem – he had no idea how to make one. But he persevered and experimented, and finally came up with a costume that is not only a larger version of his head, it also combined his love of all things 8-bit.

Liuzzi said it took him 2-3 weeks and the following materials to make an analog version of his digital head: insulation foam, joint compound, a cardboard box, glue, some gesso spray and acrylic paint. I wonder if he remembered to cut out eye holes on his costume. Rounding his costume out is ThinkGeek’s popular 8-bit tie.

I think it’s Luizzi’s neat coloring that makes the costume work. Although I have to say if I encountered him with his 8-bit head on at night I would freak out. His frozen smile kinda reminds me of the mascot boss in Dead Rising 2. That guy was scary as hell.

Breaking news! Three kids were harassed this past Halloween by an unidentified flying object. Its body was white and shapeless, it had a menacing expression, and it had rotor blades for arms:

Creepy eh? Actually, that’s Mr. T, a robot made especially for Halloween by Michael aka Utah Aerials. Mr. T is based on the KKMulticontroller, which can be used to make small helicopters with up to 6 rotors. In Mr. T’s case he has two prop-tilt rotors driven by Turnigy motors. Mr. T’s spectral form hides the KKMulticontroller and a battery. Here’s Michael’s awesome video of Mr. T terrorizing his neighborhood:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Michael, next year I think you should try turning Mr. T into the Goblin Glider, then just place a Green Goblin figure on top. Then you go as Spider-Man and you can “rescue” the citizens from Green Goblin. But judging from your maniacal laughter I’m guessing you’d rather ride Mr. T and be Green Goblin.

Seriously though, this is impressive stuff. John Salvo, who together with a friend made a couple of iPhone 3GS costumes last year, took the next step and built himself an iPhone 4 costume, complete with a 40″ LCD touchscreen panel. The costume is linked to a jailbroken iPhone 4, and Salvo managed to make the phone respond to user input from the huge display.

As if that wasn’t enough, the costume also has a rear LED light, right where the LED flash on the iPhone 4 is.

I don’t know what’s more impressive – the fact that the iPhone can be controlled via the actual attached iPhone, or the fact Salvo is willing to carry 75 lbs. of gadgets just for show. Maybe next year he’ll take it easy and just go as an iPod Nano.

My Halloween dress up duties have thankfully already passed, but for some people, the big night out is coming up this Saturday. This Halloween, I’ve seen some really interesting costumes, including this Mozilla Firefox costume. It actually looks cute, which is a bonus.

This costume is definitely one for geekettes and thankfully, it doesn’t look uncomfortable. Other than color coordination, a few elements make this a winner, thanks to the cute fox tail, ears, and make-up.

In my book, the trick to finding a good Halloween costume is to come up with something unique, but still comfortable, because you’ll most likely be spending hours sweating inside of it.

He was recently featured in an episode of CSI called Pool Shark and let me tell you that I must have watched the opening scene about 10 times because the music was so good (if you’re wondering, it was the track Some Chords that was playing).

Anyway, if you want to create an awesome Deadmau5 mask, then check this Netduino-powered one that lights up like a Christmas tree thanks to LED power. It actually ‘listens’ to the music that’s playing and displays colors on the beat. It was built by Wabash9000 for this year’s Halloween festivities.
