Some say that doctors have the most atrocious writing. I think that anyone who has to write day-in and day-out will try and optimize their hand strokes to the bare minimum, which is what a lot of doctors do, with their squiggly writing. No matter what your writing looks like, you can turn it into a font using a free website from Pilot.

Pilothandwriting is an online service that will turn your handwriting into a font. You first have to print out a template, write out all the letters in the alphabet, then Pilothandwriting will use your webcam to digitize your handwriting. You can adjust the letters with the font editor and use it to write emails.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

It’s all very cool, however there’s one big problem: at this point, you can’t download your custom font and use it on your computer, you have to use it on their website. This seems strange, since you’re basically putting a lot of effort into creating a font that you can’t use anywhere but on Pilot’s site or in an email.

If you’d rather have a font you can use in your own apps, there’s an older service out ther called Your Fonts. Although Your Fonts is a little harder to use, at least you can download the fonts you create.

The latest Nintendo DS game to hit the streets in Japan isn’t some exciting new Mario or Metroid game. Nope, it’s Bimoji Training — the game that teaches you how to draw calligraphic lettering (in Japanese, of course).

Also known as Beautiful Letter Training, the game trains you in the proper creation of Kanji and Kana characters. The coolest thing about the game is the included stylus, that looks like a traditional Japanese lettering brush.

With the game’s emphasis on taking tests and getting feedback from your virtual teacher, I’d have to say it looks more like education than entertainment. But with more and more personal development games like Brain Age, Flash Focus and Wii Fit, it’s really not that offbeat when compared to other stuff coming out of Nintendo these days.

Bimoji Training was just released on March 13, and can be ordered from game importer Play-Asia for $39. I just want it for the stylus.

The IOGEAR Wireless Digital Scribe (GPEN200N) is the device I’ve come across that can capture handwriting from any surface.

The device is comprised of a small wireless receiver that clips onto any notepad, along with a special digital pen that takes ordinary ink cartridges. The pen has its own internal memory for storage, and can upload captured data to your computer via USB 1.1 or 2.0 for later editing, annotation or coloring. In addition, when connected to a computer, it can capture directly into the PC in real time. Expected to be released sometime in Spring 2007, the wireless version will run $130, with a wired version expected to run about $80.
