Overade Folding Bicycle Helmet: No Excuses Anymore

I’ve been in a couple of biking accidents over the years, and lucky for me, I always wear a helmet, no matter what the temperature. However, I can see that having a bulky helmet around can get annoying, especially if you use your bike to go everywhere. The Overade folding bicycle helmet is designed take up a lot less space, so you won’t have any excuse to leave your helmet behind.

This folding helmet was created by Patrick Jouffret of the French design studio Agency 360. The helmet is supposed to offer the same amount of protection as a normal helmet, but it can fold up so it’s easily transportable when it’s not on your head. The folded size is small enough to fit in a backpack, purse or bag, which is cool.

Overade was first prototyped in 2010, but it’s supposed to finally go into production in 2012.

Tusken Raiders are awesome. They travel in single file to hide their numbers, they ride giant Banthas, make silly noises and best of all, some of them were shooting at Anakin during that stupid pod-race scene. Now you can keep warm this winter by wearing an actual Tusken Raider on your head. A crocheted version of course.

This crocheted hat is pretty adorable. It’s made by Etsy seller BeeBeeKins (who also brought us the equally spectacular Boba Fett hat) and I just love the detail. It’s so popular that it is now back-ordered by 6-8 weeks.

It will cost you $49.99(USD), but that’s a small price to pay to look like a Tusken Raider. You can get it in every size you need, from infant to adult. The only downside is that in 6-8 weeks winter will be pretty much over.

Boba Fett Crochet Hat: Because Bounty Hunters Need to Keep Warm Too

I’ve seen a ton of cool knit and crocheted Star Wars items over the years, even a Yoda hat, but this one has to be one of the best since it essentially puts Boba Fett’s entire helmet on your head.

It’s priced a little steep at $49.99(USD), but hey, you are paying for the geek factor, and it certainly takes a lot of work to make one. Actually, now that I think about it, that price is actually a steal. For that price, you can start your bounty hunter career and go after the likes of Han Solo. Before you know it, you’ll be wearing a jet pack, working for Jabba the Hutt and visiting beautiful places like Bespin, all expenses paid. Just make sure you don’t end up in a Sarlacc pit.

MIDI Hats Make Music While Looking Ridiculous

When I first saw these things, I honestly didn’t know what to say, but you get used to ridiculous headgear pretty quickly around here. These MIDI hats were designed by Sunny Oh and Anna Obikane, and allow you to make music. Ridiculous or genius, I have trouble deciding which it is.

The hats themselves are made from wool felt embedded with steel wool to create pressure sensors. These in turn allow the manipulation of sound. The hats use a Lilypad Arduino that was programmed with MAX/MSP software to use them as MIDI controllers. The funny, colorful balls control volume and speed. The LEDs were added mainly for theatrical reasons. Once they are illuminated, it means that the hat is ready to play.

The USB-rechargeable halo can be set to constant-on, or to flash on a regular basis. Sure, your bike might already have LED front and rear lights, but drivers coming from anywhere other than head-on or behind you might not see you – making dark intersections especially dangerous. With this bright yellow halo wrapped around your dome, there’s no way that drivers will miss you. Of course, they might point and laugh – resulting in a different kind of safety risk – driver distraction. At least they’ll have a good laugh before they crash.

Cthulhu Ski Hat: Stay Warm in Your Nightmare

If I saw someone coming down the street wearing this Cthulhu-inspired ski hat, I’d either think they were nuts, or they were really nuts.

It was knit by CraftyPA, and she’s also made one in red, in case the traditional green Cthulhu isn’t for you. For some reason, the red version looks more like Dr. Zoidberg than Cthulhu to me, though. I always wanted to go as Zoidberg for Halloween, so maybe I’ll get that one for my costume for next year. I’ll just need some lobster claws to go with it.

Bumblebee Hat Transforms You Into a Dork

So. Let’s see what we have here. Okay. This is a challenge. This G1 Bumblebee hat is made of fleece, and uhm, it’s puffy and yellow. I guess it does offer a degree of protection, which is cool if you’re a Transformers fan who also happens to be an amateur boxer, or if people are hitting you in the head because you’re wearing a Bumblebee hat.

I guess kids will love this hat? Maybe? No? What do you guys think? Not while it’s being modeled by a creepy mannequin, right, right. It probably looks fine on a human child, I mean, anything looks great – or at least funny – on a kid. Me? I think I’ll pass, I’m not much of a Bumblebee fan anyway. I’ve never been into hats in general. But if I were forced to buy a hat, yeah sure, I’d go to orgXIII’s Etsy shop, who’s selling the Bumblebee hat for $30 (USD), and I will definitely get… a Heartless hat.

Are You Looking at My Flaming Headgear, Stan?

I’m pretty sure if you strapped one of these insane looking flaming helmets to you head, you’d draw just the slightest bit of attention – from the fire marshall, at least.

The crazy Flaming Thor helmet was created by Joey Andolina (aka “Andomation” aka “megaplow”), and he’s apparently been known to show up at Burning Man donning one of these himself. In addition to the Thor Helmet, Andolina has created other variants, such as this Kevlar police riot helmet.

Each helmet is adorned with a pair for copper flame tubes and attached to a control valve you can hook up to a propane tank. While you can start out with a small flame, you can crank up the valve to put out a flame up to 3 feet into the air. Now that doesn’t sound too dangerous, does it?

According to the description “(the flaming helmet) …is an amazing way to get noticed, light your surroundings and catch yourself of fire. I can not suggest you wear it, I recommend you never wear it, as it’s dangerous!”

Legend of Zelda Hats, Almost Better Than the Minish Cap

Sometimes you just have to warm your head, so you might as well do it in style… in Legend of Zelda style, at that. Link’s hats are part of the iconic character’s charm, and now you can dress your head just like perennial hero, so long as you’ve got a handful of rupees to spare.

Of course, if you prefer a different shade of green or perhaps a nice red, no worries–there’s a fleece hat for all tastes, so long as those tastes involve Nintendo characters. If you have to have something more absurdly elaborate, there are even Kingdom Hearts hats available from the same Etsy shop.

You’ll pay through the nose (head?) for one of those fancier numbers, however–that Kingdom Hearts hat is $50, compared to an average of $26 for the other available designs.

Sadly, all pointy ears sold separately.

Noby Noby Hat (and Scarf!)

I’m not even gonna lie: the hat in this post is expensive. At $63, that hat should not only keep my head warm, but also style my hair for me, thus saving precious time in my morning routine. I’m pretty sure that’s not the case. Instead, this hat is imbued with the special power of making everyone within a two mile radius stare at you… but Noby Noby Boy fans tend to dig that sort of thing.

Noby Noby Boy, from the creator of Katamari Damacy, is a PSN game, and just in case you’ve forgotten what the hero looks like in non hat-and-scarf form, please allow me to remind you:

All things considered, that hat-and-scarf combo could have been a lot more embarrassing. As it is, it’s only embarrassingly adorable.

Pong Hat, for Playing the Classic Game With Your Eyebrows

Oh, that Arduino. Is there anything you can’t accomplish with an Arduino and a little bit of know-how? Whether your project is of a serious nature, or dedicated to playing Pong with your eyebrows–like this one is–the potential here seems limitless.

But let’s get back to that eyebrow thing.

The Ponghatduino project is designed to allow the user–er, wearer–to play Pong against themselves by using the hat, and its pressure against your forehead, as the control input. Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Ridiculous and yet completely awesome. This is all about novelty, folks, not brain surgery.

And, if you’re of a DIY-mindset yourself, this looks pretty simple to assemble, though you’ll have to bring your own hat.

Someday we’ll have solar cells on our clothes, so we can charge our gadgets while we’re out in the sun. The cells would have to charge real quick though, because I work at home. Either that or get a job that requires me to work outside. Hmmm. Those cells had better charge quick. For now we’ll have to be content with headphones built into winter hats.

Put a Sackboy on Your Head

There is a glut of Sackboy stuff out in the wilds of the internet, celebrating everything LittleBigPlanet. You can get soft Sackboy dolls and spend your days watching videos of Sackboys (and girls) cavorting in custom levels, but if there’s one thing we’ve lacked, it’s Sackboy clothing.

Now, instead of dressing your Sackboys, you can dress up as a Sackboy. Your head can dress up, at least, but surely Etsy will eventually yield enough crocheted items to put together a full rig.

Etsy crafter ShadowsInTheNyte has quite the array of game-inspired gear for sale, including Kirby hats, and others that feature Moogle and Cactuar heads, for all the Final Fantasy fans out there.

Sonic, Tails and Amy Rose Hats for True Sega Fanatics

Just because Halloween is over doesn’t mean that you have to stop dressing like your favorite video game characters, does it?

Crafter BeBeBunBunBits (nope, I didn’t make that up) made these whimsical hats based on Sonic the Hedgehog and his video game pals, Tails and Amy Rose. But for some reason, Dr. Robotnik didn’t make it into the collection.

Each hat was handmade from colorful fleece, with gigantic googly machine-embroidered eyeballs.

Sure, I might have found these hats a couple of days late for trick-or-treating, but you could still could draw plenty of stares walking into the office next week wearing one of these on your head. Me, I’m sticking with my Pac-Man headgear for now.

Pac-Man Ghost Hats Gobble Heads, Not Dots

I can’t decide if these Pac-Man skull caps are awesome or just weird. Let’s just go with awesomely weird. The colorful ghosts of video games past make yet another appearance, this time as crocheted hats.

Crafter ShadowsInTheNyte hand knits these goofy ghost hats to look like familiar video game characters. While I could only find Inky, Pinky and Clyde (where’s Blinky?), there’s also a Bob-Omb (Super Mario Bros.) and Moogle (Final Fantasy) hat available in her Etsy shop.

While they do look very much like their video game counterparts, I can’t help but think that I’d look like Dumb Donald from the old Fat Albert cartoons if I wore one.
