Panasonic just announced the new Lumix DMC-3D1, a dual-lens camera which can take high-resolution 3D images or simultaneously record stills and video footage.

The 3D1 has a 12MP sensor, and can record 3D images up to 8MP. It can also record 2D or 3D HD video at 1920×1080 resolution. The camera has got two ultra wide-angle lenses which capture images independently. This means that a scene can be captured with different zoom levels at the same time. All of the features are controlled via the 3.5-inch touchscreen.

There’s built-in noise reduction, and burst shooting up to 8fps. It comes with the usual features you’d expect from a higher end point-and-shoot camera, including an intelligent hand-held night shooting mode, which layers multiple exposures of a scene, as well as an improved noise reduction system for low-light shots. Sounds like you’ll be able to capture HDR photos as well.

The Lumix DMC-3D1 should be released by the end of the year and sells for $500 (USD).

Notice how there are a pair of stereo mics sitting on the front of its hot shoe, too.

It still hasn’t been officially announced, but the photos tell a good story. We won’t know the full specs for another week or so, but the GX1 will be released in Japan by the end of November, and the rest of the world a few weeks later.

I have been using a GoPro HD Hero Motorsports edition camcorder for a long time now for filming the fun I have down at the race track. The little cameras shoot great video and still shots, even if the menu of the original is hard to use. GoPro has announced a new version of that camera called the HD Hero2.

The new camera is improved all around, and one of the big new features is an easy to use plain language menu system so you don’t need the instructions to change modes. The new camera also has a professional 11MP image sensor, two times faster image processor, a two times sharper glass lens, and pro-level low light performance

The new camera also gets some new video modes with Full 170º, Medium 127º, Narrow 90º FOV in 1080p and 720p Video. The camera can also now record in new faster fps modes for slow motion video up to 120fps.

The Hero2 camera can also snap an 11MP still photo every half-second in timelapse mode. The coolest new feature is that the HD Hero2 will work with a new GoPro app for letting you see what the camera is shooting. The HD Hero2 comes in outdoor, motorsports, and surf editions for $299(USD) each.

I have a 27-inch iMac sitting on my desk in the office, and I can’t get enough of its gorgeously sharp 2560 x 1440 resolution display on that machine.

I have a 27-inch iMac sitting on my desk in the office, and I can’t get enough of its gorgeously sharp 2560 x 1440 resolution display on that machine. Well, pretty soon, you might be able to enjoy a similar resolution on a small tablet, if you can believe it.

Following in the footsteps of Apple’s sharp iPhone 4/4S Retina display, Toshiba is now showing off a 6.1-inch display with an astounding 2560 x 1600 resolution. If you do the math on that, it works out to a whopping 496 ppi. In comparison, Apple’s Retina displays are already a razor-sharp 326ppi. The image above is an example screen from the display. Here’s a zoomed in section from the image to give you a sense of how much detail it holds:

Enough resolution for you? The prototype LCD/TFT display offers a contrast ratio of 1000 to 1, a 176-degree viewing angle, and support for a full 16-million colors. Not too shabby for a display which could almost fit in your pants pocket.

No word on when we’ll actually see these displays in a production device. I’m still waiting for the TV in my living room has the same resolution as a 4K digital cinema.

I’m always annoyed at the low resolution I have on my integrated webcam, so it makes sense to get something with a more pixels. HP’s HD 5210 will allow you to Skype in HD, which can be good or bad, depending on how you’re looking that day. Actually, it’s probably all good for most of us.

The HP HD 5210 allows 720p video streaming and recording in full 1080p (which is cool for shooting HD YouTube videos). There’s an auto-focus lens and HP’s TrueVision auto light exposure to help with the overall look of your video. The software also allows you for one-click uploads to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Flickr.

Rollei’s Bullet HD Action Camera sort of reminds me of that 1938 revolver that shot a picture when you pulled the trigger. I wouldn’t want to be the person who’s picture was being taken with that thing, since, you know, it would probably be my last and all.

But expect nothing of that sort with Rollei’s newest shooter.

It’s definitely not as small as a regular bullet. I mean, if it were, I don’t think Rollei could slap “HD” beside its name because it probably wouldn’t be able to take images better than VGA quality.

The Rollei Bullet HD is built with a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor and is equipped with a 170 degree wide angle lens. While its shape might seem like more of a novelty for some people, it can actually make for a much useful camera, say, when you want to mount it, as you can see below, and in the demo videos over on YouTube.

The Rollei Bullet HD can record HD video in 720p and has a built-in microSD card slot for added memory. The pack comes bundled with a 4 GB microSD card and will be shipping out later this month with a price tag of $350.

There is no shortage of wearable camcorders on the market today with things like the GoPro and Replay cameras that allow you to wear a camera to get your view of what is happening when you do things. If you want a wearable camcorder that is a little more discrete and don’t mind wearing some ugly eyeglasses, the ZionEyez HD video recording glasses might be just what you need.

These glasses look like the old 80′s shades that were popular when I was a kid. The little sensor is right in front of the right earpiece on the front of the glasses. That sensor records in 720p HD resolution.

The glasses also have a hidden microphone and will offer WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity as well. The recorded video is saved to 8GB of internal storage.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The battery is good for three hours of recording, which is actually pretty good. There is a microUSB port hidden on one of the side logos for sharing and shooting video over to your computer. The only downside (other than the questionable looks of the glasses) is that the things cost $199.99 (USD). If you pre-order though, you’ll get them for $149.99.

The gang over at Liquid Image has been making goggles for scuba diving for years that have a camcorder inside, and they have a line of goggles just for skiing and other snow sports that have a camcorder as well. The latest new goggles from Liquid Image are for those off-road types.

The goggles look like the average goggles that a person on a dirt bike or ATV would wear to protect their eyes with the notable exception of the camcorder between the eyes. That camcorder has a 136-degree field of view so it sees all the rider sees. It camera records at 1080p resolution 30fps video glory.

If you want slow motion playback you can get 720p resolution with 60fps. The camcorder can also shoot 12MP still shots and the content is stored to a microSD card. The goggles ship with a 4GB card and support up to 32GB cards. Pricing and availability are unannounced at this time, but if you’re interested, you can contact the Liquid Image sales department at sales(at)liquidimageco.com.

But how small is it? Just 4.8 inches, that’s all. It’s called the HAST (Hyper Amorphous Silicon TFT) screen and it features 1920×1080 resolution with a pixel density of 458ppi. It was unveiled today by ORTUS, which is a joint venture between Casio and Toppan Printing. To put things in perspective, The iPhone 4′s Retina Display is 3.5 inches with a resolution of 960×640 and a pixel density of 326ppi.

The display also can handle 16.8 million colors, and offers a 160-degree viewing angle. ORTUS expects this to be used for high performance security monitoring, but I’d like to see this on my next phone please.

I am a huge fan of the tiny wearable camcorders that GoPro offers. I have one of their small GoPro Motorsports Hero HD camcorders that I use for car reviews and the thing is great. It’s tiny, has long battery life, records high-resolution video and has great mounting options.

The downside to that camera and the others on the market is that they are expensive with the high-end offerings at nearly $300. GoPro has unveiled a new cheaper camcorder called the HD Hero 960. The camera maxes out at a resolution of 1280 x 960 and supports 720p HD whereas the other cams from GoPro do 1080 – but it will save you some money.

The 960 can also shoot still photos and has a waterproof case. The camera ships with a head mount that will also work for helmet recording. GoPro also ships it with a curved adhesive surface mount and a flat surface mount as well. One other item of note: the 960 lacks the expansion port the higher-end cameras offer so the LCD back or extra battery pack that are available will not work with it.

The 960 can be purchased right now for $179(USD).

Apple today took wraps off their brand-spanking new Apple TV, and it’s taking the device in a new direction from previous models. By removing the hard drive, and moving to a streamed-only delivery model, Apple was able to both shrink the Apple TV and get the price way down.

The first thing you’ll notice about the new Apple TV is just how tiny it is. The miniature black box measures in at just 3.9″ x 3.9″ x 0.9″ and has a black case which lets it hide nicely amongst most home theater gear. To go along with the hardware, Apple announced HD movie rentals for $3.99 and individual TV shows rentals for 99 cents an episode. You have 30 days from renting to press play, and another 48 hours to watch from when you start.

The new Apple TV has built-in 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and can stream shows from mulitple sources, including your PC, Mac, or even your Netflix account. Plus, Apple has added the abillity to wirelessly stream programs stored on your iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad. Plus, you’ll can remotely control the Apple TV from your iPhone or iPod Touch (The app should work on your iPad too, but it’s not specifically mentioned on the Apple website).

Thanks to a powerful A4 chip, the Apple TV can crank out 720p video at up to 30fps, and can connect to your TV using an HDMI cable for optimal display quality. While there’s no word on the operating system inside the Apple TV, the fact that it runs on an A4 chip means that it could someday run apps just like iOS devices.

So the best part about the latest Apple TV is the price. The device sells for just $99 (USD) and is available for pre-order now over at the Apple Store. Apple hasn’t specified an exact delivery date yet, but is listing it on the site a “Ships September” so you should be able to get one pretty quickly.

With Google and Boxee both coming out with their own low-cost TV media boxes in the coming months, it’ll be interesting to see how the set-top box war of 2010 shakes out.

While we’re probably still looking at a 2011 or later release for Nintendo’s next Wii console, the rumors have started to fly on exactly what sort of technology might live under the hood of the next-gen console from Nintendo.

Back at the end of 2009, a rumor surfaced about how the console might include Blu-ray and HD video capability. According to the guys at GirlGamersSuck (Don’t blame me for the name of the site), a “reliable source” inside Nintendo confirmed that the Wii2 (or is it Wii-Two or Wii 2?) would sport not only 1080P HD video, but a Blu-ray drive as its primary media. In addition they mentioned a “realistic timescale” would be a 2011 release date.

Now given the fact that the hardware costs for such tech continue to drop, and the market expectations for video quality continue to rise, I can’t see any reason the Nintendo won’t include the capability. That said, the Big N has been known to focus on gameplay and controller ingenuity over hardware specs, so you never know. Guess we’ll just have to wait a little longer to see what they come up with.

And yes, I know the picture above is Photoshopped – I did it myself.

It seems as if there’s a new Android-based tablet just about every day, so it’s getting hard to tell the difference between them all. Hard Kernel’s new Android 2.1 ODROID-T hopes to differentiate itself with superb HD video and gaming capabilities.

The tablet’s 10.1-inch capacitive touch screen offers 1360 x 768 resolution and HDMI video output. In this demo from the guys at ARMdevices, you get to see the ODROID-T cranking out beautiful 1080p HD video on an attached big-screen TV. There’s also a quick demo of a 3D racer, complete with accelerometer-based controls.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The tablet runs on Samsung’s PC 110 platform (ARM Cortex A8-based CPU), along with an SGX540 graphics accelerator, and looks like a pretty speedy bit of hardware, even if it is still in the rough-around-the-edges prototype phase. The platform developer edition is expected to ship sometime this month, but it’s unknown when a commercial version will be available.

With ever-increasing pixel resolution, contrast ratios and refresh rates all reaching the point of diminishing returns in terms of improving image quality on video monitors, it was only a matter of time until someone decided to go after the number of colors stat so they could sound just that much better than the competition. Case in point, HP’s latest display, which claims a whopping 1.07 BILLION colors.

Now how they counted up all of those colors is anyone’s guess, but the 30-bit per pixel, but the HP ZR30w LCD screen has ‘em all, and you will believe! The 30-inch screen also sports a higher-than-high-def resolution of 2560×1600 and Super-IPS display technology. We’re not quite as excited by the 3000 to 1 dynamic contrast ratio, but those numbers are almost always B.S. anyhow.

While the insane color count is way more than any human could ever see, the other specs on the monitor do sound pretty nice. And while $1299 sounds reasonable for a 30-inch display of this caliber, you’re just a few hundred bucks short of an entire 27-inch iMac, which offers a similarly high-res IPS screen. But it only displays “millions of colors”. Damn.

With summer here, each time we go to the lake or the pool I worry that my camera and camcorder will get wet and ruined. It’s not just the water at the pool or lake I worry about, it’s the kids spilling their drinks on the camera too. It’s for situations such as these that Sanyo has released a new camcorder that will stop those worries of running your camera near water.

The new camcorder is called the Sanyo Xacti DMX-CA100 and it is the world’s first full 1080p Full HD waterproof camcorder. The thing isn’t simply splash resistant, it can actually be used underwater to record 1080p video at up to 60fps.

The camera can also shoot still images at 14MP resolutions and can shoot bursts at seven frames per second for up to 22 photos in 2MP mode. The camcorder will ship in June in black, yellow, and pink colors. It should hit stores late this June, but pricing hasn’t been announced yet.

3D is going to be everywhere this year, thanks to James Cameron’s Avatar. I recently read that even Mars would be filmed in 3D on those Pathfinder drones. Now, it looks like Sharp came up with a new and cute little add-on that will allow you to film 3D with your phone!

This little gizmo will work with mobile devices, digital cameras and portable gaming systems. That’s pretty cool, although I wonder how much footage they will be able to capture with their limited storage. There aren’t many details available, however Sharp says that the module will allow you to shoot both 3D photos and 3D videos in 720p.

If you thought this was going to be released in a few years, you’d be wrong because Sharp plans on shipping these to hardware makers as early as July. Mass production will follow later this year. I guess it won’t be long before kids will be shooting 3D footage with their Nintendo DS gaming systems.

Between you and me, Tron was a great movie. I really liked it. Unlike some movies, it stands the test of time pretty well. When I recently watched it again, and I wasn’t disappointed. Today, a new Tron Legacy trailer was leaked on the internet in full HD. Check out those shiny new light cycles!

It’s really great to see this trailer in full HD resolution. Just like Avatar, this movie is going to be a 3D extravaganza. The new world of Tron Legacy will just jump out, grab you and shake the quarters from your pockets.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Even Bruce Boxleitner and Jeff Bridges are coming back. The creators of the movie integrated concepts from the Matrix into Tron, which isn’t bad in my book. Wait, wasn’t the Matrix inspired by Tron? It’s too bad that we’ll have to wait until the 17th of December 2010 in order to see it.

I have a friend that fell four feet the other day and broke his leg half off. Well, maybe not half off but enough that no one wants to hang out with him until he stops whining about it. Pentax has a new camera called the W90 that could have fallen the same four feet as my pal and never missed a beat, confirming the fact that my friend is a massive wuss.

The Optio W90 can survive those four-foot drops and is waterproof to 20-feet. You can even take pics underwater and in temperatures that are freezing. This sounds like the perfect camera to strap to the back of a penguin as he is attacked by a seal while floating on an iceberg.

The camera has a 2.7-inch LCD, 5x optical zoom, and a 12.1-megapixel sensor. It can also record 720p HD resolution video and has HDMI out for hooking to your big screen. The W90 will ship in April for $329.95.

The top of the line of Canon’s camcorder lineup now features a touchscreen version of the Vixia video camera. Are you impressed by this?

Well, I have to say no. I don’t know how long it’s been since I touched a camcorder. Who needs one when you can just use your cell phone or digital camera to shoot video?

Sure, the Vixia can capture 1080p HD footage, but if you are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a video camera, then you can just get yourself one of the latest dSLR which will actually record incredible crisp HD video footage, and give you all of the lens capabilities of a dSLR at the same time. For example, Canon’s very own EOS Rebel T1i dSLR shoots 15.1 megapixel still photos AND 1080p HD footage and is available for under $750 (USD) these days.

Anyway, if you still care, the Canon Vixia HFS11 series of camcorders feature a 3.5-inch touchscreen, dual SD card slots, face detection, and image stabilization. The top-of-the-line models include up to 64GB of storage, and sell from $1,000 to $1,400 (USD). The entry-level models don’t have a touchscreen but start off at $550 for 8GB of storage and $690 for 32GB.

I must start out this post by saying that I rarely trust artist’s renderings of gadgets before they’re released, as they’re almost never what the real thing looks like. That said, this new media player LOOKS pretty slick from the concept renders, but I haven’t found any photos of the real thing.

The Newman Newsmy A18HD (nice name there) is a new media player out of China, which claims to offer a spectacularly svelte 9.8mm thick form factor (which is a couple of millimeters thinner than an iPhone at it’s thinnest point). In addition to its striking looks, the A18HD has 16GB of built-in memory, and sports an oversize 5-inch, 16-million color LCD display. The device can play videos in 720p resolution, but the screen’s resolution is an underwhelming 480 x 272, so you’ll want to connect the included component video cable if you have any hope of playing back your flicks at higher resolutions.

Audio formats supported include MP3, WMA and FLAC, while video can be played in RM, RMVB, AVI, and FLV formats (although I’m not sure if you need to do any conversion first, which is often the case with cheap Chinese media players). The A18HD also supports what Newsmy is calling “64-bit games” – whatever those might be. I doubt you’ll be playing your old N64 titles on here, but I could be wrong.

If you’re willing to take a gamble on one of these, head on over to Ownta.com, and plunk down your hard earned $142.71 (USD). I have a funny feeling that none of the instructions are in English.
