These Ear Adapters were created by the Chilean-born, Paris-based designer JC Karich, and allow users to transform earbuds into over-the-ear headphones. This means that you can take your earbuds on the go, and when you want the stability or looks of headphones you can have them easily enough.

The whole thing is 3D-printed and even comes with cushioning. If you like the design, you can freely download the schematics from Thingiverse and print them out on a 3D printer.

Sennheiser makes some really good audio products, and they’ve just upped the ante with some top of the line earbuds and an accompanying amplifier. If you’ve got deep pockets and audio quality is important to you, then these might be worth your attention.

The IE 800 earphones are made out of ceramic and will cost you a whopping €599 (~$787 USD) for a pair. They have an incredibly wide 5 to 46,000Hz audio frequency range, 7mm drivers, and have stainless steel vents at the back that are supposedly there to improve bass and airflow. To provide power for these headphones, you could use any amp, or you could go with the one Sennheiser built just for these earphones. The HDVD 800 amp retails for an equally crazy €1499 (~$1,973 USD). The amp has a body made out anodized aluminum, supports 24-bit 192kHz digital sources, and was specifically designed to work with the HD 800, HD 700, HD 650 and HD 600 headphones.

The amp and the earphones are expected to go on sale this Summer. Will you be putting down a big chunk of your hard earned cash on these?

Presumably inspired by the famous Manneken Pis statue, these silly things plug into your headphone jack, and pee all over your fancy new gadgets.
They’re available from Strapya (JP) for just ¥399 (~$5 USD) each, but I don’t see them on their international website yet. What a tragedy.

What to do with your earphones when you’re not using them seems to be a problem that’s still in search of a good solution. Sure there are cases and gadgets which let you wrap them around your mobile gadget, but they still take up space, and make it difficult to cram your phone or media player into your pocket, and they still often end up a tangled mess when you undo them. The Bumper Sound concept seems to have solved the problem for good – assuming it ever gets made.

Korean designer Sang Hwa Lee came up with this ingenious concept which turns your headphone cable into a bumper for your gadget when not in use. By using a flat tangle-proof rubber ribbon cable for the headphone cord, they simply wrap around the perimeter of your device when not in use. The three layers of rubber even provide added protection when the cord is stowed. It’s not 100% clear from these images, but it looks like the earbuds themselves would be fairly low profile, and snap into a groove placed on the headphone line itself along the edge of the device.

I’m still not completely sure of how the cable would stay put, but that could probably be achieved by pairing the headphones with a matching case with clips built in to hold it. While it’s definitely not ready for production, the concept seems like it’s on the right track to finally solving this annoying and challenging problem. Kickstarter, anyone?

If you’re like me, you probably already hang your headphones from your monitor when you’re not using them. I broke my nice headphones a while ago, so I’m not too worried about the ones that I’m using now. The Workerman MacHook lets you hang yours safely, but with a bit more flair.

The MacHook works with most iMacs and Apple Cinema Displays, and contrasts nicely to the aluminum used in those monitors. It doesn’t fit the 21.5″ models though. The model shown here is made out of Baltic birch, a furniture-grade plywood.

Unfortunately, the plywood beta version of the MacHook is already sold out, but a retail version in different colors and made from recycled plastics will be available soon from Workerman’s online store.

For a good few decades, the sole purpose of the headphone jack on our Walkmans, Zunes, and iPods was so that we had a place to plug in our headphones to enjoy sounds and audio on a more personal level. And that has worked fine, but apparently, Plugys thinks they can also be used to add to the aesthetics of your device.

Everyone, meet the Plugys. Plugys, meet everyone.

If, for some reason, you’d like to turn any one of your media devices that come with a headphone jack into a plant, a faucet, a bolt, a key, a spring, or a mushroom, then go right ahead and order one of these Plugys.

Strapya World adds that the Plugy is also a useful invention, since “it prevents dirt from getting into the earphone jack.” But we’ve gone for so long without plugging these quirky Plugys into our devices, and I don’t feel like that dirt did much damage on my iPod. What about you?

Anyhow, each of these Plugys go for ¥400 ($4.90), so if you’d like to pre-order one (or two or three or all six), then head right on over to Strapya World.

I’m not a developer of accessories or gear for iOS devices, but I would have to imagine that much of the cost to develop the accessories would have to be the fees associated with Apple certification and the plugs and such you need to work with the docking connector. Some engineering students at the University of Michigan have developed a cool new device called Project HiJack that should make it easier and cheaper to make accessories for iOS devices.

HiJack is a little device that plugs into the headphone port of the iPhone or other iOS device. Once plugged in the thing can take the 22kHz audio signal and convert that into 7.4mW of power for anything you want to run. The students say that is enough juice to power a TI MSP430 microcontroller and attached electronics.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The HiJack can be produced in quantities for as little as $2.34 (USD) each making it much cheaper than Apple approved gear. There are already a few products on the market that use the headphone port for power and connectivity, like credit card readers. The HiJack can also communicate with an app on the device via the headphone port. You can read more in the original paper here [PDF], and grab source code and schematics for the project on Google Code.

The 21st century hates wires. We have Wi-Fi, we have wireless video game controllers, even wireless external hard drives. Callpod joins in the war against wireless with their Bluetooth device called Drone.

Andres from anything but iPod has a good explanation of the Drone’s functionality. Normally, Bluetooth adapters are a pain to work with because they need so many drivers to function. The Drone sidesteps all that hassle because it doesn’t act as a Bluetooth transmitter; instead it acts as a USB sound card.

I must note however, that the Drone you see above has been modified by Andres so that it can swivel 90 degrees to the side. Normally the Drone sticks out of the hub. So holla at him if you want to know how to do the hack. I just call Andres “Andres” because I don’t know how his last name is spelled.

Andres swears by the quality of the sound that the Drone delivers, although Callpod’s estimate of the Drone’s 100m (328 ft) working range can’t really be achieved with all Bluetooth headsets/headphones; you’d have to buy Callpod’s own dragon headset.

You can get the Drone from Callpod’s site for $50. Of course you’d have to have a Bluetooth headset or headphone.

Ever get your headset wires snagged on your clothes or your bag while you’re on the move? Here’s a fun way to keep your cord from getting tangled as you saunter down the street to the sounds of your iPod.

This wouldn’t be the first time that I’ve seen a cord wrap for headphone wires, but this little guy is definitely my favorite.

There’s just something about these ninja bunny rabbit dudes that makes me smile every time I look at them.

These pint-sized, cable holding guys come to us courtesy of Korea’s J’Story (also featured this morning for their wonderful, whimsical organizer tabs).

Unfortunately, these cable manager ninja bunnies are only available in Korea at this point. If you want to get your hands on one, you’ll have to head on over to Korean retailer DCX, and hope you can find a way get them shipped them overseas. In the mean time, you’ll just have to admire them from afar.

The headphones’ Neodymium drivers offer an astounding 5Hz to 42kHz frequency response range, letting your ears in on the highest highs and lowest lows. Sensitivity is an impressive 103dB, and they can handle up to 2-watts of input power, which could be enough to blow your eardrums into oblivion. The ‘phones feature large, comfortable earcups to keep all the good sounds in and the bad sounds out.

Normally, you’d have to go to Japan if you wanted to get your hands on these, but gadget importer Audiocubes has a limited number of these high-end headphones available for pre-order in North America for $499. If that’s too rich for your budget, you can always pick up the standard A900 headphones for $179. They offer the same innards, but no fancy titanium case.

In my never-ending quest to eliminate all wires, cords and other unsightly appendages from my life, I’m pleased to hear that Creative has revealed a new set of high-quality wireless headphones, designed to transmit audio using Bluetooth technology.

Creative’s SE2300 Bluetooth Wireless Headphones can work from up to 10 meters away from the transmitter. They feature high-fidelity neodymium drivers, with a frequency response range of 20 Hz ~ 20 kHz. The headphones come with a small transmitter which plugs into your media player, laptop or other audio source via a 1.5mm mini stereo plug, but you can also use them to pair directly with other Bluetooth enabled devices such as mobile phones and PDAs. The headphones have a rechargeable battery quoted to run for appx. 6 to 8 hours (YMMV), on a 3 hour charge. If you don’t want to carry a charger, you can also charge them using a USB port.

The headphones are listed at $129.99 USD on Creative’s North American website, but just $99.99 USD on their Singapore site, so hopefully the price will come down in the US to match that.
