Audiophiles listen up: pimp up and pamper your headphones with these leather covers from Berlin-based design agency BLESS. The covers come in black or anthracite – that’s gray for us common folk.

As you can see each headphone sock cover has an extra compartment, perfect for placing spare coins, or even an extra pair of earphones. Hell an iPod shuffle would fit in there. Stylish and functional. Sold yet? That’ll be € 475.00 please.

Yes, that’s no typo: almost $700 (USD) for a pair of leather coin purse/earmuff thingies. High quality leather coin purse/earmuff thingies, but still. Actually if you look at the product page, you’ll see… nothing. No relevant information aside from the designers’ names. Which means that there’s a good chance that the Sony headphones are included with the purchase, as absurd as that sounds. Or not. I’m not familiar with the value system of rich people. Is $700 to them like $100 is to me?

Lest you accuse me of ignoring the needs of a minority, moneyed peoples should tell their servants to hit up colette and snag the leather covers. Again it’s €475.00 ($693), VAT included. Thank goodness.

These Karada Trainer Headphones literally dictate the pace that you should take while you’re exercising, based on your “age, weight, and intensity level (walking, jogging, or aerobics)” as well as your resting heart rate, which you can measure using the headphones’ built-in sensor. During the course of your exercise, a voice will prompt you to either increase or decrease your activity. And according to Ali at ChipChick, if you don’t comply with the headphone’s instructions it will show you who’s boss and turn off. Haha.

The headphones can be set to a timed workout mode, wherein the headphones will play music that the user will match – e.g. fast, intense music needs to be matched with fast, intense exercise. Of course you can also use it as plain ol’ headphones.

You can order a pair of Karada Trainer Headphones at Japan Trend Shop for $110 (USD) ($92 + shipping). Let’s hope the voice commands also come in English.

Each pair is loaded up with LR Soundsystems’ drivers rated at 20Hz to 20KHz frequency range and 112 dB sensitivity. The phones are enshrouded in a shiny metallic skin, and feature comfy padded ear cups attached to a comfy adjustable headband. And from the user reviews I’ve read, they don’t just look good, they sound great too. Best of all, they throw in two cords, one of them with an inline microphone and answer button so you can use ‘em with your iPhone too. Sweet. I’m so getting me a pair to replace my earbuds.

Let’s play six degrees of anything! How many objects do you think will it take to connect an extinct shark with a pair of headphones? The answer is – wait for it! One. Razer named their latest gaming headphones after a prehistoric gigantic shark, the megalodon. At least they chose an awesome shark – according to Wikipedia, megalodons could grow to more than 59 feet long, which is the height of the giant Gundam statue. Wow. The Megalodon headphones may not be capable of swallowing you whole, but it just might be able to reduce your brain to soup with its ability to emulate a 7.1 surround sound system.

The Megalodon headphones come with a remote control for adjusting volume (I’m not sure if I understood its tech specs correctly but it seems to like you can tweak the volume of the virtual speaker separately), microphone sensitivity, levels and mute for both mic and speakers. The remote control also lets you easily switch from 7.1 surround to 2.0 for less demanding audio needs.

The Megalodon is priced at $150 USD. It won’t be available until June 30, but you can pre-order it now at Razer’s website. It’s for PC users only (Windows XP onwards), but I don’t think anyone actually expects gaming headphones for the Mac.

These pint-sized characters might look similar to other artist-designed vinyl toys, but take another look and you’ll notice that they don’t just look cool hanging out on your desktop, they’re actually functional.

Eran Weinberg’s Headphonies combine the appeal of funky designer vinyl toys with the utility of a portable speaker. Just plug your iPod or other medial player into the back of your Headphonie, and start cranking out the tunes.

Each 3-inch tall character features a unique, artist-created persona (and of course, a pair of tiny headphones). For portability, the mini-speakers have a built-in rechargeable battery that you can juice up with your USB port in about an hour.

Characters include Mad Ape, Modern Hero, Anarchy, Ninja, Pink Bear, and a pair of nondescript black and white guys. Since each design is a limited-edition, some styles are already sold out, so you’d better move quick to get the ones you want.

The entire collection can be found over at the Headphonies online shop for $30 (USD) each.

The headphone geniuses over at The Perfect Unison teamed up with the equally ill Dutch artist Parra to produce a limited edition of beautiful wooden headphones called The Perfect Unison x Parra. They probably ran out of creativity before they got to naming the thing. Anyway. How limited? They-only-made-50-of-it limited. How beautiful?

Impressed yet? There’s more to love and drop jaws at: each of the 50 units is made of 9 layers of birch wood and was silkscreen printed by hand by Parra. Awesome isn’t enough to describe the awesomeness of the artwork on these babies. It’s unencapsulable in currently existing words. They’re like moj&Y*&wgl3e. Or [^INJ^%$AYT. Or unencapsulable. [Ed: Is that even a word?]

Some of you corny people might be thinking, “Wooden headphones? Pssh. They wooden sound great.” Fortunately the headphones are equipped with “30mm Ultrasone® mylar drivers which have a frequency range of 20-20,000hz and an impedance of output of 35 ohms.” My vast amount of knowledge in audio science tells me 35 ohms = great. I mean just the word “ohms” sounds great. “Impedance” sounds so negative though.

I’m not sure if they’re sold out because all The Perfect Unison’s site says is that they’ll soon have new designs for everyone to want. Ltdhype says that the headphones are available exclusively at The Lazy Dog Shop, so if you know where or what the hell that is, go check it out. The Perfect Unison x Parra collaboration sells for €349 (approx. $450). Ohms ohms ohms.

In my quest for the ultimate headphones for my portable media player, I recently had a chance to put these gorgeous new AirJax Titanium2 in-ear headphones from UK startup Atomic Floyd through their paces.

The AirJax are part of Atomic Floyd’s line of luxury listening products, which claim to offer not just great industrial design, but equally impressive sounds. And with with a team of designers and engineers with credentials ranging from Nike to Adidas to Philips, my expectations were high.

The minute you open the package, you know you’re in for a substantive product. Each pair of Floyds comes packaged in an nicely designed modern box, and includes not just the earphones themselves, but an array of accessories including a 1.5mm to 3.5mm headphone converter, an airplane jack adapter and a pocket-size leather pouch. There’s also a tiny hex wrench you can keep on your keychain that lets you adjust the titanium ear hooks. The included cord does a great job resisting tangles and is the perfect length for placing your media player in your jacket or pants’ pocket. Atomic Floyd also includes a matching extender cable in case you want to put your player in your purse or briefcase.

It took me a couple of seconds to figure out the right way to hang the adjustable flexible titanium loops over my ears, but once I did, I found them to be incredibly comfortable to wear, and impossible to lose out of your ears like typical earbuds (which makes them great for active wear). Heck, you can probably hang upside-down without them falling off your head.

With all the good looks and smart design on the surface, the real question most of you guys are probably asking is “how do they sound?” Well, the good news is that they sound nearly as good as they look. The minute I put on the pair, I immediately noticed that they produce a much more open stage than most cheaper earbud type headphones I’ve tried. Highs and mids shine, and sound natural, not tinny. Vocals were also clearer than I’m used to on my regular iPhone earbuds, which I’m used to wearing every day. The only thing that’s lacking is a punchy low end. I’ll chock that up to the AirJax’ unique earpiece design, which mean that the buds float inside your ear canal, rather than making direct contact with your ear (an intentional choice that favors comfort over sound isolation). If you’d rather tune out of the entire world around you, you might want to wait for Atomic Floyd’s upcoming HiDef Jax and HiDefDrums which up the bass thanks to a tighter fit with your ear canal.

At a retail price of £120 (appx. $176 USD) a pair, AirJax Titanium2 ‘phones definitely aren’t for cheapskates, but they are definitely worth a listen if you’re not particularly price conscious. While they’re not shipping until later this month, you can get your name on the waiting list over on the Atomic Floyd website.

Ever since the iPhone hit stores a couple of years back, I’ve been an addict. While the iPhone itself is a star, I’ve never thought all that much of the earbuds that come with it. Now iPhone cronies have another choice for listening to tunes and making phone calls.

I recently got an opportunity to go hands-on (or is that ears-on?) with Zagg’s new Z.buds earphones, and I’m happy to tell you that they’re definitely worth checking out if you’re in the market for an alternative to Apple’s standard phones.

Z.buds are a padded, in-ear design, which means they do a much better job blocking out background noise than Apple’s earbuds – a welcome feature if you ride on busses and trains on a regular basis. Low-end sounds are definitely a bit fuller as well, while the mids and highs were about the same to my untrained ears. The in-line microphone offered about the same call quality as Apple’s, although I found that I had to crank up the volume a bit more than usual to listen to calls for some reason.

The earphones come on a unique braided nylon cord, which is designed to limit tangling, and there are a couple of nice touches like a waist-level volume control, some adjustable chrome beads which keep the cord tidy, and a little loop to hook the cable onto a shirt button. The cord is almost a foot longer than Apple’s which is handy if you keep your iPhone in a backpack or purse.

Z.buds work perfectly with both original and 3G iPhone models thanks to a slimline plug design. Zagg hasn’t announced a final release date, but they should be available soon over at Zagg.com for $79.99.

The Brain Machine Kit comes from the mind of Mitch Altman, the same guy responsible for the deliciously devious TV-B-Gone remote control.

Just slip on the Brain Machine’s meditation glasses and headphones, close your eyelids, tune in, turn on and drop out. A hacked version of Adafruit’s Mini-POV microcontroller kit pulses the Brain Machine’s LEDs and sound generators to sync your noggin up with beta, alpha, theta, and delta brainwaves.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

As the device and your brain get on the same page, you be lulled into a trance-like state. (or maybe an acid-trip-like state, depending on how you feel about these things). Ready to take a trip? The Brain Machine Kit is now available from the MakerSHED for $34.99.

We may have reached the craftastic zenith with these DIY stuffed animal headphones. I myself have never felt the urge for my ears to cuddle up with my headphones, but maybe I’m missing out.

The project was posted by the aptly named Wurlitzergirl (who presumably cranks old-timey organ music through those those cuddly koala bears.) She says that all you need is one pair of cheap headphones, two stuffed animals (preferably the type with a seam up its back,) a seam ripper, needle and thread, and some quality music- and she claims you can make ‘em in only 10 minutes. Not too tough. Of course, this is all assuming you want to have the Princess Leia-style look in which the cinnamon bun thingies are replaced with rather large plush animals. Which you probably don’t. Still, A+ for creativity and for having the cojones to wear this out in public.

On another note: do you think all that stuffing and fuzz has noise-canceling properties?

Flickr user j.rusten furniture studio shared the story behind these headphones he made for himself. He says, “I adapted a pair of normal safety earphones for speakers, and added a vintage look. I cut the outside portion of the cups off, replaced with a curved flat sheet of plastic -over which I mounted the grill (from an old record player) and the cork which I sanded to shape. Then I painted the rest of the shell green, and installed some $50 drivers.”

I really like the funky 70s aesthetic of this particular pair, but I especially love the idea that folks could make them to suit their own personal style and color scheme. Although, the likelihood of me successfully sanding down curved cork so I can sport these is basically nil. I’m just impatient like that. Plus, where does one find old record player parts to pillage?

While Microsoft bundles a headset for Xbox 360 online gameplay, it would be an understatement to say that the sound and build quality is a bit sketchy. So what’s a heavy-duty online gamefreak to do? Turtle Beach may have the answer with their Ear Force X3 headset for the Xbox 360.

You won’t be fooling around with these puppies around your ears. For starters, the X3s have some really well-padded ear cups so you’ll be able to play for hours on end without the headache that the standard 360 headphones can cause.

In addition, the $100 headset lets you enjoy both voice chat and game audio by using an IR transmitter that plugs into the Xbox 360’s audio outputs. Onboard audio processing circuitry can expand both the bass and the depth of stereo imaging for a truly immersive experience. There are a variety of other nifty features too, like microphone monitoring so you can hear your own voice like you do on a telephone, as well as the ability to automatically adjust chat volume so you’re not drowned out when your game gets louder.

Turtle Beach expects to start shipping the Ear Force X3 headsets in early September.

Jabra, known for their wireless Bluetooth headsets, has revealed this unique wireless headset that can go from being worn as a pair of headphones, to a portable stereo system with just the flick of your wrist.

The $235 Jabra BT8030 headset not only works as a wireless Bluetooth headset for your media player or mobile phone, it can quicly transform into a pair of speakers for your computer or as a speakerphone. As a headset, you’ll be able to chat away for about 32 hours on a single charge, and in speaker mode, you’re looking at about 26 hours, depending on volume level. You can also pair multiple devices at the same time, so if your MP3 player and mobile phone are separate, that’s fine.

Seems like a pretty cool idea to me. I just hope that Jabra has provided some safeguards to prevent you from blowing your eardrums out while their being worn as headphones.
