It’s more of a fact that everyday people are becoming increasingly attached to their mobile phones. For one, it’s what gives most people a “lifeline” to the outside world; it’s what they use to communicate with their friends and family.

Aside from that, it’s also the device they commonly turn to when they’re bored (to play games and stream media) or when they’re lonely (to chat and connect on social networks.)

And the humanized devices are coming, one after the other. First it was the Modai concept phone, and now it’s Sang Hoon Lee’s Heartbeat mobile phone concept. The former is more completely thought-out when it comes to features and how it would work. On the other hand, the Heartbeat phone is basically a phone with a heartbeat.

Thankfully, its heart doesn’t beat to signal that it’s alive, because that would just make the concept creepier than it already is. Rather, the device alerts you to incoming calls, new messages, and other notifications by beating. And not just with the sound of a heart beat, but with actual inflating and deflating action on the surface of the phone.

The heartbeat can also indicate the emotional state of the person on the other end of the line. I’d prefer to have my own actual heart do the beating. No thank you very much to the Heartbeat mobile phone concept.

If your new puppy has trouble sleeping through the night, you’ll now have the option of getting Sleepy Bunny, the toy that claims to soothe him back to sleep, no matter what time of the night it is. If you’ve had a puppy before, you know the drill. You’ll probably have a few sleepless nights while you pup gets acclimated to sleeping alone.

It’s battery-powered, and it will send your puppy back to dreamland because it acts like part of your puppy’s pack. It’s got a simulated heartbeat, which is what will make your puppy believe that it’s alive (not that much is needed to fool a puppy). It should keep your puppy resting in its crate while you’ll be able to sleep in your bed.

You can get the Sleepy Bunny from Firebox for £15.99 (~$26 USD) and hope that your dog doesn’t try humping it too much.

I can’t say that I have ever used a biometric sensor that works as promised. I once had a Dell laptop that had a fingerprint sensor. I could swipe my finger a million times and never log in with that thing. It worked so poorly that I simply never used it.

Apple has a new idea for allowing a user to log into future iPhones using biometric sensors that is interesting. The patent app for the feature has surfaced and shows sensors in the iPhone case that would read the users heart rhythm when they pick up the phone.

These heart readings can be used to identify the user and allow them access to the iPhone if approved. There is little info on exactly how the user would be identified, but this is a cool idea assuming it works.

Take, for instance this full-sized replica of Tony Stark’s Arc Reactor heart. It’s a perfect recreation of the original design from Stan Winston Studios, and even lights up just like in the movie.

The prop is made from aluminum and stainless steel for heft, and can be left in either its desktop Plexiglas stand, or can be installed in your own chest to keep away those bits of metal shrapnel that are just dying to pierce your vital organs and do you in. (I will not be held responsible for any surgery you perform on yourself trying to install this.)

The Arc Reactor replica is available over at ThinkGeek for $149.99 (USD).

Tom Reid, a 19-year old university student, was at a club in Camden in north London. When Reid and his friend, Alisha Riseley, were pushed towards the speakers, Reid said to Riseley that his heart felt “funny”, and that he thought that the bass was causing his heart to beat very fast. The two went to see the club’s medic, but Reid suddenly collapsed. The Metro says that “paramedics tried to restart his heart but within two hours he was declared dead in [the] hospital.” There were no traces of drugs or alcohol in Reid’s body; the coroner declared that Reid passed away due to a genetic condition called sudden arrythmic death syndrome (SADS).

SADS is an abnormality with the electrical system of the heart. Various triggers could cause the arrhythmia, which in turn deprives the brain of blood, causing loss of consciousness and sometimes death. Ellen Mason, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, says that the loud music may have triggered an arrhythmia in Reid’s otherwise healthy heart. Visit the SADS Foundation’s website for more information on the condition.

It’s Strange & Wonderful Wednesday, and as I was perusing the offerings of the Internet I came upon Gerard Vlemmings’ – aka The Presurfer – link to an article on blogbits about weird cameras. They were weird alright: there was an 18-carat gold plated Pentax LX and even a pistol-shaped camera. But the article promised that the last ones on the list would leave me stunned. And man was I stu-freakin-nned. The last cameras on the list were made by American artist Wayne Martin Belger. The aesthetics of the cameras are no doubt unique, but what cranks up the weird to 11 are the materials that they’re made of. So what were those cameras? See for yourself:

That’s the Third Eye camera. Belger says that he made it “to study the beauty of decay.” It’s made of Aluminium, Titanium, Brass, Silver, and gem stones. And a 150 year old skull of a 13 year old girl.

Next up we have the Untouchable. Belger used it to take pictures of people suffering from HIV. Like the Third Eye, the Untouchable is made of several metals, plus HIV positive blood. The uh, blood serves as his red filter. Can’t make this stuff up.

The last camera that I’m sharing with you isn’t on the blogbits list; it’s called the Heart. Belger says that he designed it to take pictures of pregnant women who are at least 8 months pregnant, as well as to study his “relationship” with his twin brother, who unfortunately died at birth. So of course the camera is made of Aluminium, Titanium, Acrylic, Formaldehyde and an infant human heart.

Those of you who know their Photography may have deduced from the pictures that Belger’s creations are all pinhole cameras. Belger says that he prefers pinhole photography because of the unadulterated interaction between the camera and the subject. He designs his cameras with this same goal in mind, of wanting to study and relate to his subject.

Check out Belger’s site for more of his wonderfully weird artwork, along with sample photographs taken using each camera; read Belger’s statement regarding his work if you want to get a better grasp of his art. Me, I think I’m going to have to watch SpongeBob or something, or I might have trouble sleeping.

Are you a lonely geek who thinks your only companion is your computer? Is your closest friend merely a text link on twitter? That’s okay. Because now, your mouse can now provide you with daily affirmation that you are truly loved.

That’s right. Leave it to the wacky Japanese to come up with this heart-shaped USB computer mouse that does one thing, and one thing only. It tells you “I love you.”

I’m not sure if it’s a masculine or feminine voice that speaks, so you may be in for a big surprise if there’s some burly guy with a deep voice inside the mouse. Unless, of course, that’s what you’re into.

Just click the scroll wheel and it lights up with a rainbow colored glow, and speaks those three little words that make it all better. They’re available from Rakuda for ¥2280 each (appx. $21 USD).

Now remember, you can love your mouse, just don’t LOVE your mouse.

You and your significant other might have different tastes in music, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be close with your shmoopy. With this matching pair of MP3 players, you can listen to different tracks, but still be joined at the hip.

The interlocking Lovers MP3 players come together to form a single red heart, but can be played separately when you’re apart. And if you end up breaking things off with your partner, you still get to keep your tunes — a much better solution than cutting the iPod in half.

Just in time for Valentines’ Day to be over, you can grab the pair of 1GB media players from DealExtreme for about $39.
