There’s just something so warm and dreamy about walking into the living room and seeing a fire crackling in the fireplace. However, they can be a hassle to clean, and starting up the fire can become quite the chore. And if you think about it, fireplaces look out of place in many more modern houses nowadays.

But then came Serafin’s Wall Mount Liquid Fuel Fireplace. Your home could be really cramped for space but you could still have the comfort that a fireplace can provide, right on your very own wall.

The entire thing was made to look like a blank metal canvas on the wall if it’s not being used, so it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb in your home. The fireplace makes use of a natural ethanol-based fuel, too, so you don’t have to worry about ventilation or anything of that sort because it burns so cleanly.

You can get your own wall-mounted fireplace from Amazon for $649(USD).

How about all those different appliances with the exact same power cord? How believable. Still, the picture does drive home the point of the accessory.

I’ve always been a fan of 3D printers, especially when nowadays you can have one in your garage or basement and just print away. Bre Pettis has unveiled the latest edition of the MakerBot 3D printer. It’s called the Replicator and includes a host of improvements, which will allow you to replicate almost anything you can imagine.

The improvements include dual extruders and the interface controller. Each MakerBot Replicator now comes with an LCD and video-game-style control pad. The LCD screen allows you to view build statistics and monitor information as well as full control of the machine without the use of plugging in a computer. There’s an SD card slot and you can load models directly. It’s also larger than the original, allowing you to output bigger models (up to 9″ x 6″ x 6″ – about the size of a loaf of bread).

The whole thing is sold as a complete product, not a kit, allowing people who are less technologically savvy to get going right away. The MakerBot Replicator sells for $1,749 for the single extruder model and $1,999 for the dual extruder (for 2-color printing) over at the MakerBot store. They expect to start shipping in about six weeks.

The part where your profile pic appears is a transparent sheet, so you can pose for uh, the other people in your bathroom, I guess.

The first apartment I ever had was a bit rundown and ran on the tiny side, but it was still the first place that I had all to myself, so I didn’t really care. But one thing that bugged me, though, was that I got one of those middle spaces and was stuck with a bedroom with no windows.

I wish these Bright Blinds were available for sale then, because I would’ve gotten one in the blink of an eye. My old room at my parents’ house was fitted with blinds, you see, so I was already sort of having another source of light other than the light on the ceiling.

First spotted back in 2007, and finally available for purchase, these blinds were designed by Makoto Hirahara. To give the illusion that the blinds are blocking light off from the outside, electroluminescent (EL) sheets have been fitted under each of the slats that light up with a twist of the plastic stick (that supposedly controls the angles on real blinds.)

The price is available upon request, if you’re interested.

When I was a kid, and barely three feet tall, I remember answering the door once (it was the pizza delivery guy) and getting a long sermon from my mom after that. It wasn’t because I gobbled a slice down before she told me we didn’t order the pizza; it also wasn’t because she was the one who had to go tell our neighbors that we got their pizza (and that I ate a slice) by mistake. It was because I opened the door without checking who was on the other side of it first.

I didn’t have the mind to reason with her then that it was because the peephole was way up there and I way way down here. So that was the last day I answered our door (until I grew tall enough), which wasn’t much of a problem for me because it’s not like I wanted to stop what I was doing every time someone would knock or ring the bell.

But with this premise in mind, designer Hyun-june Yang has come up with the “Who Is Out There?” peephole that’s designed for kids and elderly adults who can’t reach the regular old peephole anymore.

Aside from being a normal peephole, “Who Is Out There?” also integrates a periscope to create a child-friendly peephole. What results is an extended peephole that looks a bit like some pipes welded together, but it could prove to be really useful.

Floods are uncommon where I’m from, so I always say an extra prayer when the rain just begins to pour down hard. My city doesn’t flood, but other parts of the country do. It’s heartbreaking to see families displaced from their homes or watch images of houses and cars and even refrigerators being swept away by murky rainwater.

I think it’s bad enough to lose all your belongings and even your home, and even worse if you have to stay in a shelter or some other temporary relief center that’s overcrowded and devoid of privacy. But I think the Almost Home Shelter changes all that and provides a better, alternative shelter in the event of a disaster.

It was designed by Katrina Epperson a result of a collaborative student observation of survivors from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Almost Home is based on the concept of coming up with a better housing solution for displaced families and individuals.

The modular shelter is a simple enough structure that’s quick to assemble and is easy to customize to accommodate various living situations. In fact, with the right arrangement and positioning, the homes can be made to feel like a community environment that will encourage people to live and interact with one another as if they were in a rural village.

Solar panels are a great technology, but the problem is that they are still too expensive and they require costly renovation to your home. There must be a clever and easier to implement solution. There is. 3M’s new solar film can be used with your existing windows, turning them into solar panels.

The film should go on sale in 2012 and the price is said to be about half the cost of traditional solar panels. It’s also easier to install. The catch is that the film is only capable of generating about 20 percent of the electricity that is generated by current solar panels. However that should improve as they work with it more.

On the plus side, it works under lower sunlight conditions that normal solar panels. It will be interesting to see what happens with this film. It’s a nice (and inconspicuous) alternative to expensive solar panels.

So you’re in your car, ready to head off to work, when you realize you can’t get the garage door open because you left the remote in the kitchen table. Or you could have just gotten home – only to have to park your vehicle outside while you rummage around your glove compartment trying to find where you stuffed the garage door remote earlier.

Well, if you’ve got the Craftsman AssureLink, then that won’t be a problem anymore. This device is an extremely updated and upgraded version of the usual garage door opener.

Instead of a remote, you can just use your smartphone to open and close the door. Huge plus side is that your phone is probably just lying somewhere on your dashboard or in your shirt pocket, so locating it is a breeze. Aside from that, the app for the AssureLink will allow you to monitor its status and even close and open it, even while you’re away – in case you can’t remember if you closed it.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The AssureLink app works by connecting to your home’s wireless network via MyQ Technology. Aside from letting you control your garage door, this technology can also connect and provide you access to other devices in your house.

The Craftsman Garage Door app can be downloaded for free (obviously) for iPhone or Android devices, but it won’t do you any good without the garage door opener, which sells for about $275 (USD).

Designer Hadar Gorelik set out to find a solution to a problem that’s plagued many hungry people in the morning: there’s never enough toast to go around, because most toasters can only take two, maybe four slices of bread at once. So you put in two, then you wait, then ding and then you take those out and put two in… Hadar’s solution? More toast slots!

As you can see Hadar’s concept involves a single slot toaster that can be combined with its own kind, forming one ultra mega hyper mecha toaster train. Each unit works on its own, so you can take one or more units off the mother toaster ship if you don’t need to toast a lot of bread or if you want to take a toaster with you.

I just see one problem with Hadar’s concept. How are they powered? Does each toaster have its own cord and plug, or will you only need to connect one toaster to a socket even though there are multiple units connected? And what’s the toaster’s finishing move? Why are the individual units not color coded? How will we recognize the team leader without his red outfit?

As mobile phones become more and more powerful, they acquire more functions, and as such become more valuable. Our phones are no longer good for just calling and texting. Now we use them to play games, surf the Web, take pictures and more. Now we can even use them to replace door keys, thanks to Apigy’s Lockitron web app.

To use Lockitron, you have to get the self-install kit, which includes a base-station and a USB remote fob. The fob connects to the base-station, which in turn connects to the Internet via an Ethernet cable. To use Lockitron, just log on to Lockitron’s website via your Internet-enabled smartphone. When you send a command – lock or unlock – to the base-station, the fob relays the command to the deadbolt. Apigy claims that the command is executed between 0.5-2 seconds after it is sent. Watch the video below to find out about Lockitron’s other features.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

As shown in the video, even if your phone can’t access the Web you can still use Lockitron via text. The text messaging feature also lets you “share” your Lockitron key to other people, so you can let multiple people in and do so even if you’re hundreds of miles away. Convenient, but also creepy. And how about that NFC feature? With that one, your phone is your door key. Remember how I said our phones were becoming more and more valuable?

Still, it’s nice to know that the Lockitron locks still come with traditional keys, so if something goes wrong with the hardware, software or the network, you can still use the old-fashioned key.

You can order the Lockitron self-install kits at the official website; prices start at $295 (USD).
Now that we’ve established that you’re in the market for a new doormat, why not give the aptly-themed iDoorMat a swipe?

There’s no need to burn the midnight oil (or candle) anymore when you need to get some studying, reading, or work done on a night when your power dies on you. That is, if it was a really sunny day earlier and if you have one of these colorful and simplistic IKEA Solvinden Solar-Powered Table Lamps.

I’ve been hearing a lot about green and clean energy for the past few years now, so it was only a matter of time before people got around to making these lamps, don’t you think?

As you can see, IKEA’s solar-powered lamps come in four colors: two basic ones (black and white) and two bright ones (cyan and apple green.) They come with 3 rechargeable batteries that store energy from the sun via the solar panel found at the top of the lamp.

To charge your lamp up for a maximum usage time of four hours, simply put the lamp under the heat (or, more appropriately) light of the sun for a good 9-12 hours. You’ll need around 15 hours on a cloudy day.

They aren’t available for purchase online though, so you might have to take a trip down to your local IKEA store to get one (or two).

Logitech doesn’t just do mice, they also make a whole bunch of other peripherals. And now, they are letting you play Big Brother thanks to their Alert app, which has been released for the iPad. It allows you to see what’s going on at home while you’re gone.

The app works with the Logitech Alert security system, which starts at $300 and goes up from there. The app also allows you to view stuff that was previously recorded, thanks to Alert Web and Mobile Commander, two other Logitech services. The complete system will be able to stream 720p HD video including sound. It’s perfect to spy on your pets or to see what the kids are up to. Seriously though, it could be good to have this, especially if you spend a lot of time at work.

The app itself is free and you can watch a live video at no charge. However, video recording is a premium service that costs $79.99 (USD).

Concerned about someone breaking into your house while you’re away? You could go with a conventional burglar alarm, but what sort of deterrent is a loud buzzer anyhow? This thing seems like a much better way to keep burglars on their toes.

The Burglar Blaster keeps its infrared eye watching over a location of your choice. If someone enters the room without properly disarming the system, they’ll be rudely greeted with four ounces of nasty OC pepper spray – enough to tear up and nauseate a 2,000 square foot area full of crooks. And since it’s powered by batteries, you don’t worry about it failing in a power outage.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

While this thing will definitely irritate intruders, you’ll want to be careful if you do buy mount on of these things on your wall. The entry delay disarm timer can only be set from 0 to 40 seconds, so if you screw up and don’t deactivate it quickly enough, you’ll be the one crying and vomiting. The Burglar Bunker sells for $600 (USD) over at Bed Bunker.

Water meters usually display only the volume of water that has been consumed, and even then it’s not presented in an easily understandable format. What if you had a device in your house that also showed the equivalent cost of the water that you’re using in real time? Would that encourage you to use water more efficiently? That’s the theory behind Young-Suk Kim’s concept device, the +-Water.

As you can see, the +-Water is meant to be attached to the end of faucets. It will then display the equivalent cost of the water flowing out of the faucet. It can also display the volume of water consumed in liters. It seems practical right? But if we give it a little more thought we’ll see that it’s barely useful.

I think the biggest flaw with this concept is that the device can only measure the water flowing out of the faucet it’s installed on. Unless you live in a prison cell, you’ll most likely have more than one faucet, not to mention other devices that let water in, like the ones in your bathroom or on your garden.

Not only would we need to install this add-on on each of those devices, all the add-ons would have to be networked in some way so that they display the total amount of water consumed by the whole house, because if they each show readings only for the valves they’re connected to then we’d still have to add them all up.

Still, I can see what Young-Suk Kim was trying to do, and I really would appreciate having a utility meter that displayed my consumption in real-time, and not in terms of volume or kWh but in terms of money, even if it’s just an estimate. But having meters all over my house would give me both too much and too little information, because all I really need to know is my total consumption.

This gadget won’t win points for style, and I’m sure rich folks wouldn’t be caught dead with one installed in their bathrooms. But I’m sure anyone can see how useful this little gadget could be. The LavNav – short for Lavatory Navigator – is meant to be placed on the lid of a toilet bowl. It has a proximity sensor, enabling it to automatically light up when someone comes near. Runway cleared for landing, no need to turn on the blinding light at night.

As you can see, the LavNav also reminds you to put the toilet seat back down by switching its light from green to red.

It seems like virtually anything can be turned into art. While the spoken word can be art in the form of poetry and song, it’s not often that it’s something that you can physically see. After all, a voice is something heard, not seen. However, with VoicePrints, you can display a visual representation of your spoken words.

I have to say, this is a rather novel idea. There are some words and phrases that hold strong sentimental value to a person. Being able to display these on canvas in the form of a sound wave makes it even more personal. The company can make these from virtually any sound, so it doesn’t just have to be words. You’ll want to choose your words carefully though, as these start at $120 (USD) and can get as pricey as $560.
