Ever find yourself on your bike, only to be cut off by some jerk who doesn’t think bikes belong on the road? Or maybe you’re slowed down by some peds hogging the bike path. While you could try and ring your little bicycle bell or squeeze your meek little horn, you’re much more likely to get their attention with the horns they use on a train or an 18-wheeler. That’s exactly what DIYer Chad Thoren (aka “The Chadster“) did with his bike.

The Chadster outfitted his bike with a large dual-trumpet horn from a train, connected up to a tank filled with compressed air. He says this produces much louder results than you get by just hooking up the horns to an air compressor, so I can only imagine how loud it really is. The video clip below gives you a sense of it, but I’m guessing that in person, it’s much more startling.

The rather simple build requires a cruiser in order to provide a large rack for holding the compressed air cylinder, along with some hose, bungee cords and duct tape. Chad provides instructions on how to build your own over on Instructables, but recommends that you only use it to give pedestrians a scare (and maybe a heart attack,) and not riding in vehicular traffic. Personally, the bigger problem I see is that the rider of the bike probably needs to wear earplugs when riding if they don’t want to go deaf.

If you’re in the market for some new speakers for your desktop, and don’t want the same old boring boxy plastic things, you might want to check out these unusual speakers from Edifier.

The Spinnaker speakers tower stand about 15 inches tall each, and while their name conjures images of the sail on a sailboat, while to me they look like the horns of a black rhinoceros to me. I suppose they could just as easily rename them “Black Rhino.” Either way, they look pretty cool.

Each speaker has front-facing tweeter and mid-range speakers, as well as a downward-facing subwoofer at the bottom. They offer wireless pairing with Bluetooth devices, and include a wireless remote which offers volume, track navigation and play/pause controls. Thanks to their dramatic design, the Spinnakers are a recipient of the 2012 CES Innovations Design and Engineering award.

Edifier hasn’t revealed much more in terms of specs, pricing, or availability, but will be showing off the Spinnaker speakers at CES this coming week, at which point more details will probably be revealed.

There’s something to be said about good desktop speakers for your workstation. Although I prefer to use headphones, speakers are still necessary when you want to watch a movie or play some tunes with friends around. Jason Plumb came up with these crazy-looking speakers he calls Enhance.

These speakers basically take the horn concept and shrinks it down to a compact desktop design that you can use with your computer. The body is made from teak wood, coupled with an acrylic horn. The speaker has a forward firing port, meaning you’ll be able to get lots of sound without using too much power. The speakers are also quite distinctive and unusual, which is a plus in my opinion.

For now, the Enhance speakers are just a concept, but there is always quite an interest for audiophile speakers, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see them on the market at some point.

While the Trumpet amplifier looked really good, it was a tad expensive, which is why the iPhone Portable Amplifier Horn is an interesting alternative. As with the iTrumpet and iVictrola, it doesn’t need any electricity but the resulting sound is somewhat louder than the barebones speaker. Is it worth it? I guess there are some situations in which this could be useful.

This accessory was created by Bone Collection and can double as a stand for your iPhone. It’s compatible with the iPhone 4, 3G, 3GS, and the latest iPod Touch generation. It’s supposed to add about 13 dB of sound to the normal volume of the iPhone without any power source.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The iPhone Portable Amplifier Horns are available for $24.95 (USD) at CyberGuys. iPhone 4 models are available in black, green, white, and beige. It’s hard to say if this is a crapgadget or something that could be useful. All in all, I kind of like some of the bold colors, but when I need amplification, I think I’ll stick to some powered speakers instead.

This gigantic speaker dock for iDevices uses LG Hausys’ HI-MACS material so that it can deliver a full spectrum of sound with minimal vibrations. It was designed by Korean architect Shi-Hyung Jeon to mimic traditional Han-bok and Beo-seon clothes. To me, it looks more like a giant horn, but a lot of thought went into this design to make it an efficient speaker too.

The HI-MACS material has been thermoformed into sweeping curves, and helps drive four small full-range three-inch drivers per channel to a powerful level, due to its acoustic properties. The enclosure allows for minimal sound diffraction, providing the purest sounds.

When this enormous podium speaker is lit up, it definitely looks pretty impressive. There’s no word yet if this will every make it into production, but it’s definitely an interesting concept design.

Each of these beasts measure approximately 87″ x 39″ x 35″ and weigh a hefty 114 lbs.

Arcadian Audio says that it took them 10 years to create these speakers. The design of the Pnoe is meant to “create the smoothest, roundest path for the sound wave front, without any obstructions, so that there are no sources of standing waves and spurious reflections.”
The speakers are made of fiberglass – Arcadian Audio describes the material as having a “friendly sonic signature” and are equipped with AER’s MD3 B drivers. The Pnoe has a sensitivity of 100dB/W, a normal impedance of 16 ohms and frequency response from 42-21,000 kHz.

My god that thing is huge. I bet it feeds on small children. The Pnoe horn speakers are exclusively available from Arcadian Audio; if you want one you should contact them for more info and pricing.

Obviously the amplification won’t be as powerful or as clean as what you’ll get from powered speakers, such as the similarly designed Little Horn. At least the iVictrola requires zero wires or electricity. Plus the horn is gorgeous.

Unfortunately the iVictrola isn’t available right now, but do keep an eye out for it at Design Without Reach’s limited-edition online store. At least you still have time to save up $400 (USD) for this lovely amplifier.

Little Horn speakers pack an audiophile’s wet dream into an elegant form. According to makers Specimen Products, the speakers’ supersized phonograph-like horns “posses a life-like soundstage unlike anything ever heard.” I don’t know what a soundstage is, but it seems that the way the horns are shaped enables lower frequency sound to spread out in a bitchin’ manner. Or something like that.

Each speaker is a whopping 36″ tall. So why are they called Little Horn? Because there’s an XL Horn, 8-feet tall beasts that have earned multi-talented musician Andrew Bird’s approval. Little Speaker’s horns are made of fiberglass, while the base – which houses the driver – is made using “heavy, void-free Baltic birch plywood.” Damn all these classy words and their vague meanings. Little Horn speakers are equipped with Fostex full-range drivers, the FE-103E and the FE-108 Sigma.

The regular price of Little Horn Speakers is $1,850 (USD), but you can get them for $1,500 at Specimen Products’ website (Paypal only; contact the company for other payment methods). The speakers come in various colors, but buyers can also specify their own custom colors. Little Horn speakers are compatible with any stereo system, but if you want to pair them with your DAP, Specimen Products suggests that you also get their tube amplifier, pictured above along with a pair of black-and-gold Little Horns and a classic black, crappy sounding iPod. The amp will set you back another $2,200, so you better start saving now.

At almost 5.5-feet tall, you certainly won’t miss these giant speakers in your living room. The Ferguson Hill FH001 loudspeakers feature a huge acrylic horn balanced on a delicate aluminum base.

The speakers’ massive horn design allows them to crank out plenty of volume with as little as 5-watts of power driving them. They’re made specifically for use with low powered amps (3 to 50 watts) in order to ensure the greatest audio clarity. Handling frequencies from 150Hz – 20KHz, all you’ll need is to add one of their matching clear subwoofer units, and you’re all set to pump out just about any music your amplifier can output.

As you’ve probably guessed, these speakers aren’t cheap. At £9950 ($19915 USD) each, you could buy a pretty nice luxury car for the same price as a pair of these.

The next time a car tries drive in the bike lane, hit ‘em with the 115 decibel blast of the Thunder Horn. To put it in perspective, that’s about as loud as standing in the front row of a Metallica concert. The $12 horn can crank out an earsplitting alert that should wake up even the laziest of drivers and peds.

This manufacturer’s warning pretty much sums it up: “Do not use within 50cm (18 inches) of anyone(s) ears to avoid damage.”

A California auto accessories maker hopes to bring back that awful fad in a new, even more irritating way. Let me introduce you to Horntones, a device that lets you play MP3 or WAV files of your choice through your car horn.

Yes, you heard me right. Pretty soon, you’ll be driving along and instead of a nice little beep or honk, you’ll be subjected to the favorite song of the driver behind you. If the car behind you blasting “Fergilicious” at you isn’t enough to inspire a serious case of road rage, I don’t know what is.

For those of you with no human decency, you can pick up one of these for about $150 when they debut later this year. And no, I’m not gonna make it easy for you to purchase one by providing a link to the manufacturer’s website.
