Earth Day has come and gone, but the message left behind it still lingers. We can turn lights off for an hour, stop using electricity-powered gadgets for a day, but the point of the whole thing is to live more eco-conscious lives.

Like I said, I’m all for the environment, but I’m not so sure about these GladRags. As a number of people have pointed out, they resemble what women used to use for their periods before the invention or popularity of disposable pads.

They’re green in the sense that they can be washed and re-used after each use. I’m not very fond of the idea of having to actually wash these myself, but they’re not that bad, considering what all those disposable pads and tampons are doing to the environment.

The GladRags come with wings and snaps into place, thanks to the tiny buttons on the wings. They range in price from $11.99 to $17.99(USD) and are available in a variety of patterns and designs.

What do you think?

Who would imagine that something as basic and ordinary as a razor might get re-imagined and re-designed into something more like a sculpture?

That’s what designer Penghao Shan did with the Möbius Shaver. The design is still ergonomic, although I can’t really tell with all the bends and extra handles here and there. What I can’t deny though, is how much better it looks and how stable it seems to be with its new design.

It’s clear from the name where Shan got the inspiration for the shaver: the Möbius strip, which is defined as “a surface with only one side and only one boundary component.”

It looks like Shan did a good job with sticking to that definition, because there are few sides and boundaries I can tell apart with the shaver.

The water is perfect a few minutes after running my bath, but as time passes by, I find myself getting colder and colder as the water temperature drops. By the time I finish a chapter in my book and get ready to step out of the bath, I’m a few degrees away from my shiver point.

Designers Sunmi Hwang, Hyunjoo-Lee, and Jiwon-Seok have come up with a neat solution to keep your bathwater warm in the form of Warm On. It’s a set of pebble-shaped water heaters that have sensors to determine the current water temperature and heat it up so that it always stays at that temperature.

The designers explained that their inspiration for the Warm On was based on how the magma from underwater volcanoes can heat up entire lakes or ponds.

The designers didn’t provide any information about where the Warm On system will get the energy to heat up the water or how they can be charged or re-charged. That’s a huge kink that they’ll probably need to address and figure out, but they definitely came up with a fine concept to solve a common issue.

Don’t Feel Like Washing Your Jeans For Three Months? It’s Okay!

As a general rule, I make sure I wash my jeans at least once every two weeks. It’s either that, or I let them go for a spin in the old washing machine after approximately 5-8 wears. This might be okay to some, or sound not okay to others, but I’m sure we all have different rules when it comes to our jeans and how frequently we wash them.

But can you imagine wearing the same pair, five days a week, for three months without washing them?

Apparently, it’s okay. And if you already do, then you’re not alone. Researchers in Australia had 30 willing volunteers wear a pair of denims for the time indicated above without allowing them to wash it or have it washed during that time period. They were then conducted to a smell test, and surprisingly, they didn’t really smell that bad.

Melbourne University student Tullia Jack, who was behind the whole experiment, said: “You really don’t need to wash clothes as often as you think. Stains come and go, they just wear off.” And although some of the jeans had stains (motor oil, tuna, among others), they didn’t present smells that were “socially challenging.”

Jack believes her study, done for her Masters thesis, could have a huge impact on the environment. Just think how many liters of water can be saved, if we all pitched in and just washed our jeans once every three months. (Although I think I probably wouldn’t be comfortable going past a whole month without washing them… But we’ll see!)

Don’t you just hate it when you’re at the last few milliliters of your tube of toothpaste and you just can’t seem to get that last bits of toothpaste out, no matter how hard you try to press or squeeze or twist that tiny tube around?

Designers Sang Min Yu and Wong Sang Lee know how you feel, which is why they came up with the SavePaste Toothpaste Tube to help you get all that toothpaste out, minus the trouble.

My mom, who’s ever the recycler, hates seeing toothpaste go to waste, so what she does is cut up the tube in half right down the middle to scrape out the remaining toothpaste. Unfortunately, sometimes she ends up cutting more than just the tube and she’s walked away with a couple of mean cuts.

SavePaste will probably put an end to all of that, I’m sure. But more than that, the materials it makes use of are similar to the one that houses ready-to-drink milk drinks, which is more environmental-friendly compared to the metal-foiled plastic tubes that are in use nowadays.

It’s still a concept design for now, but it’s a pretty unique one at that. It also sets out to solve a pretty common problem that I’m sure a lot of people all over the world encounter at least a few times in their life.

Who knows? Maybe we might be seeing our toothpaste in new packaging soon.

I have a confession to make: I used to be a lazy brusher. As a kid, I didn’t really understand why I had to brush my teeth at least twice a day. My mom would make me brush after meals and I’d do an inward celebratory jig whenever she forgot to remind me.

When my baby teeth began falling out, my mother scared me into thinking that it was because I hated brushing (which is, technically, true) and I freaked out with her exaggerated stories (I was going to be toothless by age 30, she said) so I got my act straight and became a religious brusher ever since.

However, for those people who have yet to learn their lesson, the Misoka toothbrush is here to save you and your <del>mildewy</del> teeth.

So what makes this plain-looking toothbrush so special? Well, its bristles are coated with a nanomineral that will not only remove all the gunk from your pearly whites (or uh, yellows) but also leave a hydrophilic coating on your teeth to prevent any detritus from sticking to your teeth. In normal-people speak, hydrophilic means “water loving” (or in this case, saliva loving) and detritus refers to all those tiny particulates that give you cavities and sore teeth if you don’t keep them away (in short, teeth gunk.)

Unconvinced? Check out this video about the Misoka toothbrush:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Imagine all the water and toothpaste you’ll be able to save by just having to brush just once a day! The thought of brushing with that (in)frequency doesn’t sound very appealing to the adult me, though. The Misoka toothbrushes go for $15 a pop from the Hiroshi Beverly Hills Salon. Get a-nano-brushing today!

“Your toothbrush cleans your teeth. What cleans your toothbrush?” Nice tagline. If your answer to that question is “umm..” then you might want to take a look at the VioLight Zapi toothbrush sanitizer. I think we all have to take a look at the VioLight Zapi toothbrush sanitizer, because really, what cleans your toothbrush? WHAT CLEANS YOUR TOOTHBRUSH?!?

The Zapi uses ultraviolet light to clean your toothbrush “in minutes”. Let’s hope that’s not more than 5 minutes. Since we can’t see the actual cleaning process, Zapi bobs enthusiastically as proof of the intense 99.9% cleaning action going on inside. It has a removable drip cup so you can easily clean it. So what cleans your teeth? Your toothbrush. What cleans your toothbrush? Zapi. Who cleans Zapi? You. Someone invent a Zapi Zanitizer.

The VioLight Zapi toothbrush sanitizer sells for $30 USD at Amazon. As you can see it comes in 4 colors, and includes a free matching toothbrush. It runs on three AAA batteries, not included.
