Golden Sun: Dark Dawn Features Hyperlinked Dialogues: the Internet Must be So Proud

RPGs and other games with rich fictional histories have long had a select few fans that could cite obscure trivia like they were just telling the time, like the famous Red Shirt Guy. You’d think that with such voluminous amounts of fake facts (fakts?) to keep track of, games like WoW or Elder Scrolls would have come up with this innovation. But no, it had to come from a little Nintendo DS game. What innovation am I talking about? Hyperlinked conversations, of course:

Camelot Software, developers of upcoming game Golden Sun: Dark Dawn – the first DS game of the Golden Sun series – were smart enough to include links to information about people, places and events when they are mentioned in conversations. In the example shown above, tapping Matthew’s name would make the encyclopedia entry to the right pop up on the top screen of the DS. Simple but extremely practical, especially if you’re new to the series. This is one feature that needs to be emulated industry-wide. It’s a shame Golden Sun’s doesn’t have hyperlinks within the hyperlinked encyclopedia entries, though.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn will be released on November 29, 2010. You can pre-order it on Amazon for $35 (USD).

World’S Most Futuristic Newspaper

This newspaper doesn’t seem to respond to touch. Maybe it needs a stylus to work.

Or maybe the boss needs to have a talk with the editor and teach him how to use the “Delete” key in addition to “Cut” and “Paste.”

These Hyperlink Hands Are Big and Full of Yarn-Y Goodness

“Hyperlink” is a series of oversized yarn sculptures that depict our favorite handy friend, the hyperlink hand cursor.

There are four cursor sculptures in the series. They are rendered in three dimensions and made more colorful than we’re used to. The designs on the side are fantastically pixelated and lovely to look at.

The sculptures were created by Ben Fino-Radin, and are made of plastic needlepoint canvas and yarn. He is a big fan of combining technology and yarn in interesting ways. You can see more of his work at his website.

Bringing the hand cursor into 3-D and making it pretty huge is super cool in my book. I’d love to have one of these on display in my office!
