The Mushroom Kingdom turns into the Egg Kingdom with these awesome Super Mario Bros. Easter eggs. These might be the most awesome Easter eggs ever. Not sure where Peach is, or Bowser for that matter, but I’d love to see these in my Easter basket.

These eggs were created by Instructables user lmnopeas. I think that my favorite would have to be Bullet Bill. These eggs were created for her son, who is “going through his Super Mario Bros. phase.” Not that any of us ever get over that phase.

She used images from her iPhone to get all of the details just right. She drew the images onto the eggs with a pencil and then used acrylic paint to fill them in. Sadly, this makes them inedible, but they are still great to look at and admire.

It may sound like an oxymoron, but the Privacy Monitor is actually a very cool and somewhat practical mod by Instructables user dimovi. Only the wearer of a complementary pair of glasses can see what’s being displayed on the Privacy Monitor; everyone else will only see an annoying white screen.

Dimovi was able to pull this off by removing the polarized film within the LCD monitor and attaching it to a pair of sunglasses. You have to be familiar with polarization to understand how this algebraic trick works. I trust in your Googling skills but for now just know that a polarizer – such as the polarized film commonly found in monitors – is designed to allow only a portion of light waves to pass through it. Watch and be amazed:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The PlayStation 3D monitor works in a similar fashion to allow individual players to see just their half of a two-player game.

Unfortunately the polarization mod is as complicated as the property of polarization. It involves a laser cutter, some solvent and a gerbil. Okay I was kidding about the last part. Go undercover and sneak to Instructables to get the details on the mod. This post will not self-destruct.

Instructables member and loving father Makendo made a unique chest of drawers for his son – a 10:1 replica of a Rubik’s Cube. The resulting furniture can’t actually be played and solved like the toy because it only rotates on one axis, but Makendo did make it so his kids can still cheat and rearrange the individual tiles, thanks to rare earth magnets attached to each tile.

The chest also has another kind of puzzle in the form of hidden locks for each drawer. When the drawers are locked, you have to remove the colored wooden tiles and look for dowels underneath, which you then push to open the drawers. Since you can rotate the drawers and rearrange the wooden tiles, it can be a fun albeit easy to solve puzzle for Makendo’s kids.

You! Shinobi! I can’t see you but I know you’re there. I’ve already shown you the kunai USB drive, which is definitely fit for a ninja but is priced for a shogun. If you need a stealthy and pointy flash drive but are strapped for cash, just follow the instructions of Instructables user eyefail and you’ll end up with something like this:

Unlike most of the DIY projects we’ve seen, this one is surprisingly simple to make. Simply put, you make an outline of your shuriken design on paper, then use that to trace and cut out two halves from a piece of foam-core poster board. Then trace and cut out a space for the actual flash drive that you’ll hide on the halves. Then it’s just a matter of gluing the pieces together.

It’s eyefail’s finishing moves that makes the shuriken USB look good. A deadly combination of black acrylic paint, spray paint and aluminum foil along with quick ninja slashes to give the housing a weathered look. Go, do your jumping from tree to tree thing until you reach Instructables so you can read the full instructions.

Here’s our weekly quota for an unusual and complicated alarm clock, courtesy of Instructables member / Arduino enthusiast / geeky torturer Nolte919. His alarm clock requires the user to play a game of Tetris and clear not one, but four lines on the tiny screen before it turns off the alarm.

When you’ve used up the preset number of snoozes, the game fires up. As you might have guessed, you’ll have to turn the clock sideways in order to play the game. It may not take a genius to play Tetris, but because each level is randomly generated it just might be enough to fire up your neurons and really wake you up.

Speaking of presets, this being an alarm clock made by a geek for geeks, it has a dizzying array of customizable parameters, from the brightness of the backlight to the number of times you can activate snooze. There are also four game modes of Tetris to choose from, but the geekiest feature of them all? Being able to set the alarm time down to the hundredths of a second.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

If it looks like Nolte919 created the clock from scratch, it’s because he did – from the basic electronic components to the software. This is probably one of the more advanced projects I’ve ever featured here. If you think you’re up to the task and like waking up to random puzzles, check out Instructables for the full set of instructions.

Most of the time, landline phones – remember those? – are still useable even when the electricity goes out. Instructables user art.z shows us how we can make good use of that omnipresent (and free!) power source – by creating a flashlight that taps into the phone line.

Art.z’s flashlight is made of 12 3.0V LEDs. If you follow the instructions correctly, you’ll still be able to make and receive calls on the phone even if the flashlight is plugged in. Art.z recommends experimenting with different resistors to tweak the brightness of the LEDs.

I wonder if you can also make a USB charger that taps into the phone line. That being said, art.z is careful to remind us that tapping phone lines for power is illegal in some countries. Also, even if its perfectly legal where you live, don’t be a douchebag – use it only when you absolutely need to. Check out Instructables to find out how art.z made his phone-line powered flashlight.

Chen retained the laptop’s screen, motherboard, hard drive, RAM as well as its power adapter, then made a frame-like case using acrylic sheets, sandwiching the screen and the motherboard together. A couple of extra tweaks here and there – drilling fan holes, relocating the power button etc. – and he had a new desktop computer.

As other Instructables members and commenters pointed out, you could also look for a similar or compatible laptop body and transfer the old laptop’s guts there. Chen also suggests using a touchscreen kit so you end up with a touchscreen computer instead. The form factor of this particular conversion makes it easy to mount the computer to a wall. Check out Instructables for the full walkthrough.

I’ve never heard of a supervillain-themed party, but if you’re planning on throwing one then you might want to check out this recipe for Kryptonite Candy by Britt Michelsen aka BrittLiv, the same person who made the Pixel Trash Can. BrittLiv used Riboflavin vitamin B2 in place of the non-existent mineral, because apparently the nutrient glows in UV light, and even in direct light.

Making kryptonite candy seems pretty simple. All you need are some vitamin B2 pills, water, sugar and food coloring. The only tricky part is that you’ll have to cook with as little light as possible. More on that in a bit.

So why would you need to make this candy in the dark? You see, unlike Superman’s most hated ore, Kryptonite Candy won’t glow forever. According to BrittLiv, exposure to light will eventually “destroy” Vitamin B2, but the process is pretty slow so you’ll have ample time to enjoy your glow-in-the-dark candy. BrittLiv didn’t mention if it’s still safe to eat the candy after the Vitamin B2 has degraded. Now that might be your stomach’s kryptonite. Practice your evil laughter and check out Instructables for the recipe.

If you think that LEGOs rule, then look no further, because there’s a guide out there that will allow you to make your own LEGO headphones.

These headphones will definitely make you stand out from the crowd. The good thing is that all you need to do if you want a pair is to follow some simple instructions on Instructables. The only problem is that due to their squared-off design, is a lot of sound could escape from the headphones.

The coolest thing is that since they’re all made out of bricks of your choice, you can make your own custom color design. And if you drop them and they come apart, you can probably just snap them back together.

Here’s an awesome weekend project for all you tinkerers out there: a laser monocle headpiece. Instructables member Lemonie says that it’s perfect for Star Trek fans, but anyone who doesn’t think that a laser beam on your head is cool shouldn’t be reading Instructables anyway. Lemonie improvised a lot in his project, and he used a lot of things that came from other things, but I think the end result is worth it:

Here’s the laser in action:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

And here’s a rough shot showing the view from the monocle (Lemonie says the actual view is a lot better than this):

Itching to build your own laser monocle headpiece? Then check out Instructables for the details. And prepare to apply epoxy to your face.

Oh, Rickrolling, aren’t we finished with you yet?
The cake was made by one Papersatan (a pretty fitting name for a perpetrator of Astley-based crimes, eh?) for her boyfriend’s birthday. She made a fake cake-like covering out of a hatbox, which when removed reveals a real cake with Rick Astley’s (sort of) likeness and those catchy lyrics etched in icing.

It’s bad enough to be Rickrolled on your Internets, but on your birthday? Now that’s just mean.

Remember the 1970s classic Mr. Microphone? Here’s a fun use for the old toy that turns it into a bit more devious of a device than originally intended.

This brilliant, but simple hack by electronics tinkerer Kipkay takes the guts out of an old Mr. Mic, improves the audio quality, and turns it into an easily concealed wireless spy microphone.

With just a few minutes of simple soldering, a couple of bucks worth of parts, and an Airwick Stick-Up air freshener, you’ll have a mini spy gadget that’ll let you listen in on unsuspecting victims from afar.

While Kipkay’s video does a good job walking you through the basics, head on over to Instructables for the full walkthrough.

Now you didn’t think I’d let you leave without featuring the classic Ronco commercial, did you?
