Iomega Mac Companion Expands iMac Storage, Ports

While I’m sure that the iMac is a great computer for many users, there’s just something that irks me about a desktop that’s made out of laptop parts. That being said, they still look pretty good, and have decent specs. You can now augment your iMac with the Iomega Mac Companion Hard Drive, which adds an external hard drive combined with extra USB and Firewire ports to help plug in your other devices.

The hard drive comes in 2TB or 3TB capacities and has 2 extra USB 2.0 ports and 2 Firewire 800 ports. It connects to your Mac via USB or one of the two Firewire 800 ports. It comes pre-formatted to work with a Mac out of the box, and it was apparently designed to fit perfectly on top of the base of your iMac or Apple display. It’s also got some LED lights showing the approximate amount of used storage, which is a nice feature.

The Iomega Mac Companion costs $195 for the 2TB version and $295 for the 3TB version.

Iomega SuperHero Dock Literally Saves iPhone Photos and Contacts

Superheroes and saving go hand in hand, so it was only a matter of time before a storage device branded as such came out. From Iomega, House of Storage, comes the SuperHero charging dock. It doubles as a backup device for photos and contacts from an iPhone (3G and above) with the help of its sidekick, SD Card… Man. It can also store photos from an iPod Touch (2nd Gen and above).

It even has its own comic book, though it would have been funnier if the avatar had the dock for its head, instead of the generic male hero mug.

The SuperHero is used in conjunction with a free app. It’s not yet in the App Store, but the SuperHero itself isn’t for sale yet either. The backup process is not fully automatic but it is straightforward. The dock and the app are also needed to restore files.

The SuperHero will cost $70 (USD), and will come with a 4GB SD Card so you can start saving your files out of the box. Of course there are cheaper software alternatives like PhoneView – which is actually much more versatile than the SuperHero – but at least with this device you don’t need a computer to backup and restore your files.

iomega’s eGo Leather Hard Drive may not actually carry your booze, but it will hold up to 250GB of your favorite files, so you can sneak them around any place you can carry an open container. The drive is a dead ringer for an actual hip flask, complete with curvy metal ends and a rich leather wrapper. And just in case you really do go out on a bender and drop the thing on the ground, it’s got built-in Drop Guard protection to keep your data safe.

I say, why not keep one of these in your inside left pocket, and a real flask in your inside right? Of course, just don’t make the mistake of opening your real flask and pouring your 30-year old Glenfiddich onto your keyboard. Now that would be a true crime.
