I’ve never really had the patience to create an elaborate sand sculpture. At best, I’ve created simple little castles. However, these sculptures are anything but simple. Check out these amazing ephemeral Star Wars sculptures created in sand.

These photos were taken of sculptures from all over the world, so it seems that it’s a recurring theme. Star Wars and sand, sand and Star Wars. Like chocolate and peanut butter, I suppose. I love the Darth Vader sculpture, but the lumpy Jabba one isn’t bad either. And I bet it doesn’t stink like a real Hutt does.

It would have been great to see a time-lapse video of them being created, but even better (and maybe a little bittersweet) to see them waste away when the tide comes in – especially Jar Jar.

Flickr pro/proud mom/Jedi Grand Needle Felter Kit Lane imagined that as a child, Zorba’s offspring wasn’t really an evil Hutt. Unfortunately “the unmerciless(?) taunting by his slime mates over his compulsion for plushies” pushed him over the edge (must’ve been quite a push) and forced him into a life of crime. So Kit Lane created this needle-felted wool version of that young, lovable and plushy-loving Jabba. It’s on display right now at the Bear & Bird gallery’s Stitch Wars exhibit, which runs until August 29. You can also check out a few more shots of needle-felted Jabba at Kit Lane’s Flickr page.
