The success that Apple has had with the iPad means that just about every maker of gadgets out there that can build a tablet wants one on the market. The latest iPad competitor to land is from RIM and is called the Blackberry PlayBook. I can’t decide if it’s a bag of fail or has a chance, I suspect fail, given the success rate of tablets other than the iPad, but who knows for sure?

The Playbook is described as a professional-grade tablet and promises power and performance for the web. The tablet has a 7-inch screen that is high resolution and uses a 1GHz dual-core processor. The thing runs BlackBerry’s proprietary Tablet OS and supports HTML5, Adobe Flash 10.1, Adobe AIR and Java apps.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The tablet can pair with Blackberry smartphones and is ready out of the box for Blackberry Enterprise Server use. The screen resolution is 1024 x 600 and it has 1GB of RAM. Other features include a 3MP front camera and 5MP rear with 1080p HD video recording. It also has an HDMI output, 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, and more.

Availability is set for early 2011 at an undisclosed price. Both 3G and 4G versions of the PlayBook will be offered at some point.

If you’re in the market for a smartphone, but want to run something besides Windows Mobile, Android or the iPhone OS, you might want to check out this little rarity from China that runs on a flavor of the Linux operating system.

With a ginormous 5-inch screen, the BPhone actually looks more like a UMPC than a smartphone. The 800×480 touchscreen display should look great playing back your video files, and is definitely big enough to display web pages with greater readability than smaller devices. It’s also got a unique 180-degree flip capability, so you can view content on the screen whether you’re using the keyboard or not.

Speaking of keyboards, the BPhone has a full QWERTY ‘board when you flip it open. It runs on a speedy Marvell PXA310 CPU, running at 624MHz, and has built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and a GPS (although the included CARELAND GPS app only works in China). And since it’s a quad-band unlocked phone, you can use it pretty much anywhere on the globe, with any carrier you want.

While it’s definitely not as stylish or svelte as, say, an iPhone 3GS or Nexus One, the BPhone definitely looks powerful in terms of its hardware. If you’re thinking about getting your hands on one, head on over to Chinagrabber, where it retails for $569 (USD).

How many times have you plunked down your hard earned cash on a new game for your mobile phone, only to find out the game sucked? Now you can try out full (time-limited) versions of many mobile games right in your web browser before you decide to buy.

The guys over at mplayit offer you the chance to play a number of Java-based games from the convenience of your computer’s web browser. The site currently offers over 60 fully playable titles including games from EA Mobile, NAMCO, SEGA, Gameloft, Digital Chocolate and other popular mobile game makers. An phone key emulation wrapper lets you use your mouse or key controls to play the games just like they’d work on your phone. To keep up on the latest games, they also offer an RSS feed of the latest game demos as they’re released.

While most games have a time limit of 3 to 5 minutes, it’s definitely enough for you to get a taste for each title, and to make a better informed decision before you load up your cell phone with a bunch of crap. And maybe you’ll discover some gems that you never would have given a second look to.

Nope, your eyes aren’t fooling you. This isn’t an actual iPhone. It’s the latest in a long line of iPhone knock-offs to find its way to our shores from China. The SciPhone isn’t the first iPhone clone out there, but it’s the first one I’ve seen that claims to run native Java applications.

The case design and the on-screen icons of the DigitalRise Sci-Phone D990i definitely look quite a bit like a legitimate iPhone, but upon closer look, you’re likely to be able to tell the difference (gotta love that floppy disk icon for documents). The iFake even tries to outdo the original by offering something called “shake control”, which lets you shuffle through songs by simply shaking the phone.

The Sci-Phone D990i features a 3.2-inch color touchscreen (some of the docs say 3.5-inch, so I don’t know which is accurate) , a 1.3-megapixel digital camera, and offers Bluetooth support. Since it’s an unlocked quad-band phone, it’ll work on any GSM-based network, and uses GPRS for data services (sorry no Wi-Fi or 3G ).

With the new iPhone 3G hitting stores next week for just $199, and Sun working on Java support for the real iPhone, you’d be hard pressed to come up with a reason to drop over $200 on this complete fake. The only reason I can think of is if you’re not an AT&T customer and want people to think you have an iPhone. Frankly, you’d be better off picking up an iPod Touch and pretending to speak into it.
