Thanks to the Internet, the gravity of trivial issues are quickly amplified and made overbearingly clear. Sometimes though, the hatred is warranted, as is the case with the launch day problems of Diablo III, a game that might as well be renamed Error XXXVII and the first quest switched to “Log In”. CCP Games, makers of the cutthroat MMORPG Eve Online pounced on Blizzard’s snafu with a new login screen:

The numbers refer to three of the most common errors that players encounter while trying to play the game. Personally I’ve only managed to play about 15 minutes of the game in two days, not that I incessantly tried logging in for the past 48 hours. To console myself I’m just imagining that no one at Blizzard talks to this guy anymore. They just give him cold stares whenever he’s around.

To the people who say we knew what we were in for: really? Instead of thinking that gamers should have expected this, I say Blizzard should have expected this. They did beta tests. They have experience with server load with World of Warcraft. They have a tally of pre-orders to work with. They have loads of money. How financially disastrous could it have been for them if they over prepared? “Jeez, we set up too many servers, now more people will be able to play. Can’t have that.”

I don’t care what reasons Blizzard has for not including an offline single player mode in Diablo III – DRM, preventing hacking and cheating, more profit from the Auction House – none of those “good” intentions matter if your users can’t play, which, correct me if I’m wrong, is kind of the point of a videogame.

We’ve just started to see some powered exoskeletons, and they are still pretty clunky affairs. So how can we even think about starting to build a real AT-AT? That doesn’t seem to faze the Mike Koehler, the man behind AT-AT for America – a campaign to build a fully-functional full-size AT-AT.

Even building robots that can walk using four legs is complicated, let alone a 75-foot high monster that can carry over a ton. The trick I think is to try and make defense contractors try and build a replacement for a tank that can walk.

An AT-AT can move up to 40mph, carry 40 stormtroopers, and on top of that, an extra ton of cargo. It’s going to take a while, but if it ever does come out, it will reign the battlefield. Honestly, I think it’s just too large and unwieldy. We’ll probably see exoskeletons in the field for soldiers way before this, but I could be wrong. Mike is working on a Kickstarter page to raise funds for the build, but for now go here if you want to get involved or make a donation.

Like everything in this world, Apple is not perfect, although lately Apple seems to be showing more of its “not perfect” side. Case in point: Shane’s complaint about the outrageous prices of digital magazines on the iPad. While that may not be directly Apple’s fault, with its leather pants-tight hold on the iTunes Store, Apple could probably negotiate with PopSci for lower prices if it really wanted to.

I know what you’re thinking, Shane – if this keeps up I’m going to… email Steve Jobs! I suggest that you write a draft using The Joy of Tech’s Steve Jobs Email Generator. I’ve taken the liberty of writing your first draft:

I’ve also written El Jobso’s most likely reply to your email:

Have something to say to Steve? Check out the email generator at The Joy of Tech. But don’t blame me if the cops come crashing through your door after you try it.

For any writer of tech, April 1 is a day of reckoning. This is the day when you never know if that cool item you see on another site or online is real or if it’s a fake put there to be believable enough to trick consumers into trying to buy and writers into covering it.

I ran across this Pad-dock iPhone to Tablet converter today and knew right away that it had to be a fake. Click on the buy link and my suspicions were confirmed. The thing claimed to be able to dock your iPhone in the back and show the screen on the larger dock LCD on the front.

This is actually an interesting product idea, and I bet many folks will click it and try to buy it today. I guess if you really want a larger screen for your iPhone, you could always buy a magnifying glass.

Quick! Get yourself a Great Touchspectations shirt before Apple confiscates them! It has all of the Apple Tablet’s features, lifted directly from Steve Jobs’ mind by a psychic with a Mental Amplifier Helmet!

It’s a shame that I only saw this shirt today, a few hours before the actual tablet will be revealed (or not). Still, this is proof of how hyped-up this gadget has become. We didn’t see shirts joking about the features of the Zune or the PS3 did we?

You can get the shirt at Diesel Sweeties for $17 – $18 (USD) depending on the size.

But since this joke is likely to be obsolete tomorrow, scrooges like me can just download the wallpaper version of the list of features and save $18 that you can use to to put towards your actual tablet purchase instead.

From Pocket-lint‘s secret Apple “sauce” comes a couple of stolen snapshots of the Apple Tablet. It has four screens, four home buttons, four 3.5-mm headphone jacks, four speakers, and an 8-in touchscreen. 8-inch overall anyway.

The compartmentalized touchscreen will allow users to make and receive a total of four calls simultaneously, take Lomo-like pictures using the four cameras. Since its OS is very, very, very, very similar to the iPhone’s OS, you can run all of your apps and view up to four of them simultaneously! Hell, you can even have four instances of the same app! Twitter addicts rejoice!

I heard from my own Apple outsider that AT&T will sell the four-screen Apple Tablet at a subsidized price of $0.99, but will require users to sign up for an 8-year contract.

A member of the University of Pennsylvania’s Modlab spent the summer at Willow Garage, makers of the door-opening, self-plugging PR2 robot. Either the Modlab guy was really good friends or secretly annoyed with one of the researchers there, because he decided to install a robot that lobbed ping pong balls at the researchers’ cubicle as a parting gift.

For me the funniest thing about the whole prank is the sheer number of balls fired by the robot. But who knows, maybe this will make your day so here’s the video:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

If I had the nerdery necessary to build a ping pong-firing robot, I’d hide it in the men’s bathroom and make it fire at anyone who pees. Or I’d aim at anyone who dares fall asleep in the office. Or I’d make it so anyone who says a certain word or phrase gets ping ponged. What I wouldn’t do is simply aim it at someone’s office and have it fire away relentlessly but at low velocities, which quickly devolves the prank to an annoying and awkward event. Unfortunately I’m not a nerd. At the moment I don’t even have an office to go to.

We’ve yet to see a gadget really compete against the iPhone, to the extent that subscribers in the U.S. are willing to endure the sometimes horrible service of AT&T so that they can keep using Apple’s revolutionary product. If you were a designer or engineer and you were asked to make an iPhone-killer, what features would you include? Would you add a 48 megapixel camera? The ability to print pictures? What about cassette tape, VHS, and even floppy disk reading? What the hell am I talking about?

I’m talking about the xphone. And yes, that’s a VHS tape going inside it. Watch as this German-made spoof pokes fun at consumers’ demands for a do-it-all device and technology’s ever-increasing capacity to pack a ton of features into one gadget.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The Onion would be proud of whoever made that video.

When we love someone or something, we tend to overlook its flaws and shortcomings, and we say to ourselves that these flaws and shortcomings are just part of the person or the object that we love, they’re included in the package, even though we could mine these flaws and shortcomings for comic material, thus putting them to good use. Take Star Wars fans. I’m sure that a large percentage of them are intelligent people. And yet it took more than 30 years and a shirt to bring this point up: When you think about it, all galaxies are far, far away.

If you’ve heard the joke before, I apologize for the hype. Personally it made my 2 a.m. so much more awesome. But if it had the same effect on you, you might want to thank Debbie Vega for making the joke up by buying her t-shirt at TypeTees for only $10 (USD).

I don’t know about you but this is new to me: apparently the English and the Australians are bitter cricket rivals, so much so that they have a tournament, popularly known as The Ashes series, which only features the two teams. Imagine how ridiculous it would be if the EPL had an annual Manchester United vs. Liverpool cup. In line with this years’ Ashes series, British satellite broadcaster Sky TV released a remote control with upside-down controls, making fun of Australia’s monicker, “The Land Down Under.”

That’s the British for you. Let’s hope the Australians respond by beating England at the tournament.

Vaporware manufacturer DuroSports Electronics wants to ease the transition from paper books to e-books with their Smell of Books scented sprays, specifically designed for e-book readers. Not. This is the kind of idea that’s so stupid it’s awesome, and for a while you’ll wish it was true. Then it’ll just be plain stupid. Right now though, the Smell of Books is a hoot:

I lol’d at Eau, You Have Cats. DuroSports went the extra mile and even concocted a scandal with the Author’s Guild, obviously a parody of the Kindle text-to-speech snafu. The Guild’s “statement” claimed that the Smell of Books was violating the “olfactory rights” of authors, so DuroSports had no choice but to pull out their aerosols for now.
