The sculpture was made by Flickr user Everfalling for his sculpture class at the Academy of Art University.  He wanted to make something inspired by Katamari Damacy but was also interested in creating his own version of Atlas holding up the world on his shoulders when the idea hit him. The sculpture is made of bronze, weighs 9 pounds and is 8″ tall. The Prince and his Katamari are actually separable, but given the game one can imagine that the Prince isn’t holding up the ball but is stuck to it.

Everfalling is willing to make copies of the sculpture for sale. Just contact him and be prepared to shell out $600(USD). Better start gathering money. It would be awesome if he could make the Katamari magnetic so you can actually stick things to it. Check out Everfalling’s Flickr page for more images.

What you’re looking at here is a Christmas tree, Katamari Damacy style. At least this is what one looks like after it’s rolled up all the ornaments, lights and tinsel from an ordinary tree. Though I’m surprised there are no little elves or tiny reindeer in there, with their arms and legs flailing about. Maybe once the Prince rolls it around a bit more.

This awesomely geeky creation was posted by flickr contributor szy a couple of years back, but it deserves to be a regular geeky holiday tradition, right alongside the Pac-Man Xmas tree, I think.

Well that went pretty much as I would have expected it to. Though I wonder if the Katamari could squeeze inside all those green pipes and underground. I have a funny feeling the Prince missed a few secret levels between 1-1 and 8-4.

Bat Country Entertainment invested countless hours building their Kataminey Damacraft mod. The mod works like the original, letting you control a smalle sphere, picking up various cubes from the world, and growing as it rolls around. Here, check it out in action:

To me, it looks like the Prince rolled his Katamari around a designer furniture store to create this lamp. About the only thing it’s missing for it to be complete is some little flailing people and the occasional pig or cow stuck to its outside. Maybe it’s just not big enough, and it can’t pick those up yet.

Given the fact that the tiny furniture replicas ost hundreds of dollars each, I can only guess that each of these lamp cost over $25,000 to make. Now that’s an expensive Katamari.

It’s not the prettiest project ever, but again–it’s a work in progress, and creator FlurryOfDestiny, who has a killer name, is planning to give it another paint job. But what makes this particular katamari so great is that it’s made of styrofoam (at least, part of it is), for ease-of-stickiness. And the deviantARTist behind the idea wants to make it big: a few feet in diameter.

I bet if you cover your entire house in rubber cement, you can turn anything into a katamari. This is just a guess. Purely hypothetical. Possibly disastrous (or amazing).

But all tacky products aside, keep an eye out for any styrofoam balls that turn up. You can always recycle ‘em into a katamari of your own, and then we can all race to see who can make the biggest.

I admit it would take something pretty horrible to not look cute as a plushie (and sometimes, even that doesn’t work), but this just makes me want to see more of the elusive Queen. deviantARTist Min-of-the-Cosmos must agree, because this is the second Queen plushie to turn up in her gallery.

But the other characters get love, too, like the adorable Prince.

I kind of want to coat them with honey and see if they’ll stick together in a giant (gooey) katamari.

With these amigurumi projects, the faces are usually stylized, or at least crocheted like the rest, but perhaps with beads attached. Not so here; the Prince’s unique little features have been rendered in fabric and sewn on, for that extra touch. In the burgeoning crochet “market,” a crafter’s gotta do something to stand out. The katamari itself is just another bonus!

Actually I’ve only been able to play Katamari Damacy once, briefly, so I don’t know whether the different headgear actually exist in-game or if the designer took liberties. Either way, the designs are awesome.

With a metal ball, an optical mouse, bits of PS2 controllers, and a little help from Arduino, Kellbot put together the roll-a-riffic controller of all Katamari lover’s dreams. Now if only we could get that in, say, a giant beach ball form.

Kellbot calls the controller “a hella fun way” to experience Katamari Damacy, and the video footage makes me want to agree. It also looks hella accurate, while we’re throwing qualifiers around.

In the forthcoming PS3-exclusive Katamari Forever, the stars have all been destroyed and need to be remade (again, sigh), but this time, things are a little different–in several key ways. Katamari Forever is a mix of old and new levels, and the old levels take place in the King of All Cosmos’s faulty memory, and they are devoid of color. As you roll your katamari, color leaches back into the stage.

In some of the new stages, your katamari has the power to alter the world; in one desert stage, you terraform the landscape with a water-soaked katamari, absorbing the sand and producing verdant forest. Katamari Forever will also have neat effects like graphics filters you can purchase with points earned, so you can see your rollable world in wood grain, for instance, and a comic effect mode. But with all this gain comes sacrifice: the only multi-player feature we saw with Beautiful Katamari will be absent. Not a huge price to pay, however.

Actually, I’m not sure what the motivation was behind the Katamari Cousins Project, but in my imagination, it’s frustration–but the good kind. The kind that results in forty paintings, one cousin per painting. And, of course, a classic central scene to anchor the project. No cows, though.

Of course, I can’t help but wonder what the forty-one paintings might look like if they were rolled into a giant canvas Katamari….

From the looks of the pup in the picture, he’s clearly not amused with the whole thing. I’m guessing that my two oversize 120-lb dogs wouldn’t look quite as dignified. Still, what better way to fly your geek flag this Halloween than to dress up your canine as the Prince of of All Pooches.

The only thing missing from the costume design is a volleyball, covered with velcro, little toy buildings, people, cars and airplanes.

If you’re really nice, the artist will even make up a matching pair of purple leggings for your pup. So if you’re ready to dress up humiliate your dog, head on over to Victoria’s Store over on Etsy and plunk down your $30 buckaroos.

While I like to think this Katamari wedding cake is filled with tiny buildings, cruise ships, cows and wildly gesticulating little people, it’s actually just lemon cake with strawberry filling. Oh well, it still sounds delicious to me. Besides, those airplanes have a tendency to get stuck in my teeth anyhow.
