These cake balls are perfect representations of the classic Katamari Damacy: they’re sticky and colorful, and they look like they’re a lot of fun to use (eat). Pieces might occasionally pop off mid-use, too. Hey, nothing’s perfect.

Once you start looking at these up close, you start to realize how complex they really are–these cake balls are not only candy-coated, but there’s more candy attached, using candy glue to hold everything in place! That’s not frosting on the outside, see; the key to this project is the use of a lot of candy melts. That’s what makes the M&Ms stick to the outside–the best part of this project.

Well, let’s be honest – the best part is probably eating it. But visually, it’s those little nubby M&Ms, just waiting to have all sorts of things stuck to ‘em, like toys, sushi, lily pads, and a cow or two.

From the why-didn’t-I-think-of-that files comes this homemade katamari. But oh! You’re only seeing part of the picture, because after this bad boy is finished, it’s gonna roll. And by roll, I mean, “some people are gonna stick things to it.” Which is exactly what a katamari is for.

It’s not the prettiest project ever, but again–it’s a work in progress, and creator FlurryOfDestiny, who has a killer name, is planning to give it another paint job. But what makes this particular katamari so great is that it’s made of styrofoam (at least, part of it is), for ease-of-stickiness. And the deviantARTist behind the idea wants to make it big: a few feet in diameter.

I bet if you cover your entire house in rubber cement, you can turn anything into a katamari. This is just a guess. Purely hypothetical. Possibly disastrous (or amazing).

But all tacky products aside, keep an eye out for any styrofoam balls that turn up. You can always recycle ‘em into a katamari of your own, and then we can all race to see who can make the biggest.

When it comes to Katamari Damacy, it’s all about the King and the Prince. The Queen gets no love and she hardly even shows up in the games! Of course, as full of himself as the King is, do you blame her for not hanging around? It’s a shame, though, because she is completely adorable.

I admit it would take something pretty horrible to not look cute as a plushie (and sometimes, even that doesn’t work), but this just makes me want to see more of the elusive Queen. deviantARTist Min-of-the-Cosmos must agree, because this is the second Queen plushie to turn up in her gallery.

But the other characters get love, too, like the adorable Prince.

I kind of want to coat them with honey and see if they’ll stick together in a giant (gooey) katamari.

The world of Katamari Damacy is a strange one, to be sure, but it sure is cute. The Prince and his colorful cousins are each cuter than the others, and though the idea of sticking people and animals to a giant ball and then rolling them around is pretty horrific if you think about it, in Katamari, even this sort of dire torture manages to be adorable. So when you run across a Prince made of yarn, you know what you’re gonna get: soft and cuddly cuteness.

With these amigurumi projects, the faces are usually stylized, or at least crocheted like the rest, but perhaps with beads attached. Not so here; the Prince’s unique little features have been rendered in fabric and sewn on, for that extra touch. In the burgeoning crochet “market,” a crafter’s gotta do something to stand out. The katamari itself is just another bonus!

It’s always nice to see a cake topper like this, for such a special day, that really goes the extra mile in collecting the little details that make the couple unique and special. Geek-themed cakes (or really, any themed cakes) already do a lot to celebrate individuality, but a Linux shirt? Totally raising the bar.

Nintendo DS devotees have long hoped for a Katamary Damacy game on the versatile handheld, and since every other company in the history of gaming has jumped on the trend of remaking games for the current handhelds, it’s long been a disappointment that the franchise has been absent from Nintendo’s juggernaut. But all that’s about to change. Well, sort of.

Korogashi Puzzle Katamari Damacy is in fact a part of the Katamari franchise, and it is for the Nintendo DSi, but it’s a puzzle game and it’s part of the forthcoming DSiWare download service… at least, in Japan, where the game will be available next week. The gameplay is similar to Pac-Attack, a classic puzzler based on Pac-Man.

While it’s a little disappointing that we don’t have a “real” Katamari game for the DS(i), there’s a silver lining or two on this particular cloud. The game is a steal at 500 Nintendo points (equivalent to $5 U.S.), and it features the King of All Cosmos, and he’s the best part of any Katamari game anyway.

Well. The rolling is pretty awesome, too. Sigh.

The Katamari Damacy games are beautiful, addictive… and kind of a pain in the butt. You’ve got to get all this stuff, and the King of All Cosmos is so specific, and then there are all the cousins. Who’s got to round them up? You, of course. You have to do everything around the Cosmos. Well, here’s one way to keep those pesky cousins together: hang ‘em on the wall.

Actually, I’m not sure what the motivation was behind the Katamari Cousins Project, but in my imagination, it’s frustration–but the good kind. The kind that results in forty paintings, one cousin per painting. And, of course, a classic central scene to anchor the project. No cows, though.

Of course, I can’t help but wonder what the forty-one paintings might look like if they were rolled into a giant canvas Katamari….

Strike another blow against Sony’s PlayStation 3 console. Already faced with a serious lack of available titles, it looks the console has lost another game in its arsenal with the revelation that the latest game in the popular Katamari Damacy series is now likely to be an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Originally slated for release on the PS3 and 360, a rumor has now surfaced that Namco Bandai has pulled the plug on both the PS3 and Wii versions of Beautiful Katamari. This really surprised me, given the history of the series as a PlayStation exclusive and its following among Sony fanboys. While this report has not yet been confirmed by Namco Bandai, the original source of this story usually is spot on. However, a number of stores are still showing the game in their order systems as being planned for all three consoles. We’ll just have to wait and see what actually hits stores this October.

This just reinforces my feelings that Microsoft and Nintendo are the only console makers with enough of a foothold in the market to demand system exclusivity, with Sony running a distant third in the race.
