One of the biggest complaints that I’ve had with some of these Japanese watches is that you always have to push a button to check the time. Since Tokyoflash started working with more LCD displays, instead of only using LEDs, this problem has been somewhat solved – assuming you can make out the time. Their latest watch, the Kisai Optical Illusion, plays with diagonal lines to make you see the time.

The limited-edition Kisai Optical Illusion is a touchscreen alarm watch, with time, date, alarm, and EL backlighting. You’ll need keen eyes to make out the time, as it’s hidden in diagonally reversed lines among a maze of confusing squiggles.

If that’s too hard on your peepers, you can just press the reveal button and the watch will show the time. It comes with an animation mode as well, which alternates between the puzzling illusion and revealing the time ever 20 seconds.

While it might not look that technologically advanced, the display has one of the most complex LCD screens ever on a watch, with over 1500 tiny LCD segments which need to be addressable by its time circuits. The watch is made out of stainless steel, and it’s available in either black or silver with a natural or green display. For the next two days, you can order the Kisai Optical Illusion watch for $179 (USD). After this, you’ll end up paying $199.

This watch is perfect for the gentlemen, who can’t abide using anything but a proper pocket watch. The Tokyoflash Kisai Rogue Touch Pocket Watch will probably take a bit more time to read than an analog version, but it will sure get some attention from everyone.

The watch is encased in stainless steel and has a futuristic touchscreen interface. It works with a hybrid combination of LCD/LEDs, so it will be easily readable during the night or day. If you need more light, just push a button and the LEDs will flare up to allow you to read the time. The screen locks after 60 seconds and can be unlocked with a swipe. It’s also got an on-screen animation and alarm clock features.

The display isn’t that hard to read. The outer ring shows the hours, while the inner one shows the minutes. My guess is that you could train yourself to read the time with a glance pretty easily. It’s available in red, blue, green, or “natural” LCD colors and sells for $149 (USD) for the next two days over at Tokyoflash. After that, the price jumps up to $169.

Tokyoflash’s watches are well-known from having somewhat obtuse ways of displaying the time. The newly launched Kisai Seven incorporates two pulsating LED rings to show the time. Initially, the display looks confusing, but once you take a closer look, anyone who can tell the time on an analog clock will have no problems with this one.

The Kisai Seven watch is most definitely inspired by Tron, and is based on an earlier concept design by Scott Galloway we featured last year.

It looks like quite an interesting addition to anyone’s watch collection. The inner ring shows the hours and the outer ring shows the minutes, in increments of 5. There are additional LED strips to decipher in order to get the exact time, but honestly, within 5 minutes is fine in most cases unless you’re Jack Bauer.

The watch is available with either blue or white LEDs, and Tokyoflash is offering the Kisai Seven for $99 (USD) for the through 10/28 at 11:00am (Japan time), but it will bump up to $139 after this.

The Kisai Rogue Touch watch is the latest TokyoFlash watch. It was previously featured on their blog as a concept last November, and now it’s become reality.

The Rogue Touch display is right out of science-fiction, so telling the time can seem a bit complicated. The outer ring tells time in one time zone, while the inner ring displays a secondary time zone.

You interact with the watch using a touchscreen face to change modes or set the watch, but it automatically locks after 60 seconds, and then you need to swipe your finger across the screen to reactivate it – a smart design choice.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The case has a polished gunmetal finish, and the display, illuminated by bright LEDs is available in four colors. The time-telling LCD is always on, so you don’t have to activate the LEDs to view the time, just to illuminate it in the dark.

Through 9/29, you’ll get free shipping and $20 off if you order the Kisai Rogue Touch from the TokyoFlash web store. After that, the watch jumps up to its regular retail price of $199 (USD).

The Tokyoflash Kisai Night Vision was submitted as a concept about a year ago and thanks to the user votes on the Tokyoflash website, it has become reality. It’s surprisingly easy to read once you figure out how to do so.

The hexagonal shaped metal watch is littered with LEDs. A button press reveals the time. The outer ring indicates the hours, while the minutes are displayed in the center using stylized digital numbers.

The case is made from matte black stainless steel, and comes in blue, red, or green on black LED versions. It also has date and alarm functions, which is cool. As with many of the recent Tokyoflash LED watches, you’ll need to recharge it about once a month via USB.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

There are about 300 charges per battery, and the battery can be replaced. Overall, the watch is pretty interesting. It’s currently selling for $129 for the launch at the Tokyoflash website, but will revert back to $149 in 2 days.

Unlike most of Tokyoflash’s watches, the new Kisai 3D Unlimited is actually pretty easy to read. The numbers are displayed anti-clockwise in a sort of isometric 3D perspective, with the hours at the top. It takes a brief second to get the hang of it, then it all makes perfect sense.

Like some of the more recent Tokyoflash watches, the 3D Unlimited uses an LCD, so it’s always on. There’s a cool EL backlight so you can read it in the dark. It has a colored, mirrored LCD display. It comes in 2 different types of straps, either black metal or polished silver, and 5 different LCD colors.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The Tokyoflash Kisai 3D Unlimited has a battery life of about 12 months, with an easily replaceable battery.

This is another watch that went from a concept back in March 2010 to reality in August 2011. It’s available from the Tokyoflash store. It’s currently on sale for $120(USD) until August 11, 2011 (12:30AM), but it will quickly revert to $145 after that.

This unique watch from Tokyoflash tells time with words instead of numbers or hands. The always-on LCD watch was originally submitted by a 15-year old Canadian and Tokyoflash made it into reality. Tynan Mayhew submitted this design last year and it’s now available for all, through Tokyoflash’s online store.

Like some of the more recent Tokyoflash designs, this watch uses an LCD so that the display is always on, instead of fading from view and necessitating the push of a button.

The display looks cool, but I would have preferred for only the words to be shown and the other become dark instead of the current time blinking and all of the other words continuing to display.

It’s available in a few different color combinations, from black with blue LCD to purple or green LCD with a white strap. You can buy it for an introductory price of $119 (USD) over at Tokyoflash. The price goes up by $20 in 2 days.

Tokyoflash just released the Kisai Rogue SR2 watch, an updated version of the Rogue that they had available before. Unlike most of the Tokyoflash range of digital watches, the Kisai Rogue SR2 features an always-on LCD display. This means that you won’t have to push a button to read the time, which is a bonus in my book.

You get the LED backlight in either red, green, blue or orange. The display is reminiscent of the Kisai RPM.

Relative to some of their other watches, the Kisai Rogue SR2 is pretty easy to read, which is cool. The gap in the inner ring tells the current hour, while the gap in the larger ring tells the approximate minutes, and the skinny rule around the outside tells exact minutes. While a lot of watches that Tokyoflash sells look pretty cool, not all of them are easily readable. Reading the time on a watch should be intuitive and shouldn’t require consulting a manual.

The Kisai Rogue SR2 is available over at Tokyoflash’s online store for $179 (USD).

Tokyoflash just announced a limited acetate version of the Kisai RPM, which was a reader-submitted design turned into reality back in November. Although the large blank face still looks a bit odd in my taste, at least this watch is easier to read than Tokyoflash’s usual crop.

The blue LEDs on the white watch are placed the same way as on an analog clock, which makes it easy to tell the time. It’s also the first watch from Tokyoflash made out of acetate, a strong, glossy material. Each part of the watch has been hand-cut, machined, and polished. The LEDs are hidden behind smoked glass, which makes them somewhat dimmer than usual, so it’s good if you don’t like super-bright LEDs.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

As with many Tokyoflash watches, this one is USB-rechargeable in 3.5 hours. One charge should last about a month. Each battery is good for 300 charges, so it should last you about 25 years.

The Kisai RPM Acetate is available from Tokyoflash for $159.99 (USD).

Well, they’ve done it again. Tokyoflash has made another one of those cool concept watches into reality. The idea behind the Kisai Console was posted on their blog back in February 2010. And now it’s going to be on hipster’s wrists everywhere!

In its initial concept form the Kisai Console was called Bright Time. The LED watch was voted as one of the most popular designs, and was also developed based on the feedback that was provided by readers. Although Tokyoflash says that this watch is easy to read at a glance, I’m not too sure about that. Like all Tokyoflash watches, it’s a bit complicated to read, but hey, that’s part of the fun.

The Kisai Console is selling for $200.64 at the Tokyoflash store. Like many of their watches, it’s rechargeable via USB and the battery lasts about a month on a charge.

As you might have guessed, this new Tokyoflash watch isn’t easy to read (what else is new?) but it does looks pretty spiffy. The white version definitely makes me think of TRON: Legacy. There’s also some good news! It’s pretty affordable, compared to some of the other watches that they’ve created.

It’s called the Kisai Light Speed and it features lunar orange and blue LEDs and is available in either black or white. Like most LED watches, you need to push a button to see the time. It flashes for a few seconds, then it switches off. Like all new Tokyoflash watches, you can charge the battery via USB. It needs to be charged up every month or so for 3.5 hours, and each battery should last 300 charges. That’s 25 years, if I’m doing my math right!

This Tokyoflash watch was initially created by a reader of their blog named James Fursedon. He created the concept and Tokyoflash’s design studio made it a reality.

The initial idea was submitted by James last February. A render by Tokyoflash and a post on their blog made the Kisai RPM one of the most popular design submissions they’ve had.

It’s kind of cool that you can now buy it here. It looks interesting, but I personally don’t like the large black face that doesn’t have any lights or dials of any sort. It seems a bit of a waste of space. If you’ve got cool designs, submit them here.

Those crazy scientists over at Tokyoflash came up with another watch, that (surprise) is strangely hard to read – the Kisai Round Trip. But that’s what we expect from Tokyoflash, right?

Like a lot of their watches, this one is also charged via a USB port, which is handy, but it still takes 3.5 hours to charge up this watch, and you’ll have to do this every month. Plus, it’s still a mess to read. I won’t bore you with the details about the rings and how you can read the flashing lights to tell time. Suffice it to say that you’ll probably get used to it if you wear this watch long enough.

Still, it’s made from stainless steel, has lots of blinking green, blue, and orange LEDs, and you’ll look cool wearing it. It costs $170(USD) and is available over at Tokyoflash.

Inspired by the neon lights of the flashy Shinjuku district of Tokyo, this new watch out of Japan is sure to draw plenty of attention when you check the time.

The Kisai Denshoku watch is crafted from aluminum and stainless steel, and tells time using a unique set of stacked orange LED bars.

A press of the rectangular display button starts an animated sequence that shows the time in three steps. First stage shows the hours, then the second displays ten minute intervals, followed by a third pass that displays the single minutes. Confused? Maybe this simple Flash animation will help illustrate how the Denshoku works:

There’s also an animation mode that lets turns on a lighting sequence once every minute for 12 minutes after checking the time. Why? Dunno. But it sure does look purty. You can even adjust the brightness of the LEDs to conserve battery life.

The Denshoku is available in either black or bright silver brushed metal finishes, and can be found over at TokyoFlash for appx. $236 (USD), including worldwide shipping.
