You might remember the interactive music poster that can play short music recordings to advertise bands for a concert or event. There’s no music involved this time, though; rather, all that’s on the screen is a girl – who’s waiting for your kiss.

Researchers have developed a “poster” equipped with a distance sensor that makes the image in the photo react when it is kissed. Ok, it’s not really a poster at all – it’s just a flat screen display.

The system was developed by a research group at Keio University, who are still thinking of how it can be used commercially.

This system is very simple. There’s an ultrasound sensor here, to detect how far away your head is. As you approach the sensor, the picture changes. When you get closer, the picture becomes a kissing face, and when you move away, it becomes a blushing face.

The research team are still coming up with ways to improve their system and are looking to create an iPad app that works in a similar fashion in the future.

The current system only produces visual changes, but we could also include the scent of shampoo from the person’s hair, or a lemon-flavored film on the lips, or a speaker that whispers ‘I love you.’ People who’ve tried this system advised us to do those things, so we think there’s still plenty to be done. We’ve learned a lot from talking to users.

It seems like interactive posters might soon take over the world, although you can give the technology a couple of years or so before it catches on.

If you look at the source of most of the weird gadgets and inventions that surface, I bet that a ample number of them will hail from Japan. Engineers and designers in Japan come up with some really kooky ideas. The latest is from the Kajimoto Laboratory at the University of Electro-Communications.

The lab is conducting research on tactile communications with the aim of creating a device that can transmit the feeling of a kiss. Yes, I am serious. The Kiss Transmission device is a pair of boxes with plastic tubes sticking out the front that are powered by motors that are controlled by a computer. The guy on one end puts the straw in the mouth and flicks it around with the tongue and the person on the other end has the straw on their machine move in the exact same way. It’s supposed to simulate the feeling of kissing, with lots of tongue.

You can watch the video below to see one of the designers using it, but be prepared to be a little grossed out and embarrassed if you get caught watching it.

So the vast gaming frontier is pretty well packed with shmups of all kinds. Scroll, bounce, dodge, a little running, a little gunning–whatever your preferred action, you can get it in a shooter… and now, that even includes kissing. Which is to say not shooting at all, but that’s how you gotta roll in Kissma. Kissma, a browser-based lip-smacking indie romp, even inspired one writer to call it a “ksmup,” or a “kiss ‘em up.”

In Kissma, crazy pixelated heads fly toward your own disembodied noggin, and your massive protruding lips are your own defense. Sessions last sixty seconds, and in that time, you’ve got to plant your lips with abandon if you want to work your way up the scoring charts. Twice each game, a kisskey bottle floats in amongst the heads, and if you drink up, you get a special ability.

If you’re still not quite sure how this horizontal scrolling kisser really works, there’s a handy video with some footage, or you could simply go give it a try.
