Sure, the turrets and robots of Portal have been getting more attention out of late, but we should never count out the charm of the Companion Cube. Just take a look at this Weighted Companion Cube sweater. It will never threaten to stab you.

Tumblr blogger – Tumblrer? – Monday adapted the chart used to make this knitted Companion Cube and combined it with a raglan pattern to make this gray and heart-filled sweater.

I’d tell you more about how Monday made it, but her instructions are filled with knit geek speak. I didn’t even read it all the way through – I hope the steps don’t include murdering a Companion Cube to use its hide. Head to her blog for more details, or check out her Flickr page for more pics.

Knitted Dissected Animals Prepare Kids for Bio 101

Ah, Biology 101. We may be from different nations and cultures, but I’m sure those of us who have gone through that class share very similar experiences: The fear. The excitement. The jumping, twitching animals. The smell. Oh, the smell. The teacher who repeatedly hit the catfish in the head with a stone while the class watched, one half in horror, the other literally rofl’ing. Just another one of those insane things we went through as adolescents. Re-live those memories with The Crafty Hedgehog’s knitted dissected animals:

The frog up there is hand knit from a silk/wool blend, while its innards are needle-felted out of 100% pure wool. It even comes pinned to a dissection tray for that added morbidity!

The poor lab rat above is made from an acrylic/mohair blend with wool innards. Both the frog and the rat can be taken out of their trays (they’re only pinned down, not glued to their trays) and… cuddled. Wednesday Addams approves. There’s also a dissected Easter Bunny, which has Easter eggs in place of innards.

All of the creations sell for $125 (USD) at The Crafty Hedgehog’s Etsy shop. Quite expensive eh? If you know how to knit, you can purchase the knitting patterns for the frog and the rat instead for only $4 each. Too bad there are no knitted dissected catfish. That would have done it for me.

Super Mario Sweater Vest: the World’S Most Powerful Bully Magnet

Unless of course the bullies in your area are gamers as well, in which case they’ll just ask that you hand this vest over to them. Or else.

For those too young to know, the vest features a screenshot from World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. Super knitter sister Happy Seamstress made the vest for her husband, who apparently is the 10-year old version of John Hodgman. I’m kidding, Mr. Happy Seamstress (and Mr. John Hodgman).

Happy Seamstress has been asked for a knitting pattern as many times as Mario has abused that poor World 3-1 turtle’s shell for extra lives, so she’ll be posting said knitting pattern soon. Meanwhile check out her site so you can gather the materials and practice her instructions.

Knitted Gas Mask Will Keep You Safe From Imaginary Diseases

Knitter/Yes Woman teriyakimoto‘s friend wanted a “knitted gas mask + hat to wear for winter bike trips to work”. I think it’s safe to say that this friend has quite specific needs. Teriyakimoto obliged, braving the depths of absurdity and the fact that she had no pattern to work with, and returned from her knitting basement with her awesome creation, which was already attached to her friend’s head.

Since she had no pattern, teriyakimoto had to measure her friend’s face to ensure that the mask and hat would fit snugly; they won’t save him from a biochemical attack, but they could at least keep his face warm.

The mask is attached to the hat with velcro (the black stripes on top) so he can easily remove it if he runs into bullies, or if he observes that he can’t breathe well while wearing the mask.
