There are a bunch of people today that don’t care for tons of zoom and fancy features on their camcorder. Many folks just want a cheap and compact camera that is good enough for uploading to Facebook or YouTube. Kodak has a new digital camcorder that might be perfect for folks like this called the Kodak PLAYFULL Waterproof Camera.

The (woefully mispelled) PLAYFULL comes in black or white colors and is expected to ship this October 28th. The little camera is waterproof to 10-feet. It is dust proof and can survive drops of 5-feet onto plywood. It will come in a version with a 4GB SDHC card and a version without. The camera has 18MB of internal storage and supports SDHC cards up to 32GB. The digital zoom is 2x and it can shoot 1MP still photos and video in 720p resolution at 30 fps.

The screen also offers something called “Glare Shield” which is supposed to adjust the LCD so you can actually view it in bright sunlight – a major problem for many portable cameras today. It also has integrated effects, including sepiatone, B&W, high saturation, and 1970′s film. It has a lithium polymer battery and an integrated USB plug for charging and synchronizing content online. The version with the 4GB card will cost $119.95 (USD) and the version without is $99.95.

It seems that what people want nowadays are rectangular camcorders that can capture 720p video. Not one to question thousands of paying customers, Creative is reeling in its share of the HD – and YouTube – loving crowd with the Vado HD. Then there’s Kodak and their Zi6, and of course the Flip Mino HD and Ultra HD. Now the video reviews I’m about to share with you were posted by famous geek Chris Pirillo more than half a year ago – December 31, 2008 to be exact. The guy’s a workaholic.

Anyway, even though it’s ancient by Internet standards, Pirillo’s reviewing ninjutsu is quite effective and convincing. To maximize the efficacy of his review, you have to play the following clips at the same time. The video below is the Flip Mino HD’s recording of Pirillo’s review. You can get the Flip Mino HD for about $190 (USD) at Amazon. The Mino HD has 4GB of built-in memory.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

That wasn’t so awesome, but the Kodak Zi6‘s performance is actually a tad worse. It currently sells for $126 at Amazon. The Zi6 only has 128MB of internal memory, but you can add up to 32GB more via its SD/SDHC memory card slot. Here’s Pirillo one more time:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Finally, here’s the winner of the PirilloPirilloPirillo show: Creative’s Vado HD. The Vado HD has 8GB of built-in memory. For some reason it’s currently cheapest among the three – only $99, at least on Amazon. And did I say it was the best of the bunch? See for yourself:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Did you watch all 3 at the same time? Are you insane? Why would you do that? Lucky for you, Pirillo didn’t make another video pitting all 3 against the newer Flip Ultra HD. Seriously though, you should do that, Mr. Pirillo, or at least a Vado HD vs. Ultra HD head-to-head. Splitscreen please.

Bird-Electron, the people who brought us iPod speakers made from gourds, has released another set of unique speakers for your portable media player. This time, the speakers are using recylced plastic containers from 35mm film to produce sound.

In addition to the environmentally-friendly reuse of materials, Bird-Electron Kodak Speakers don’t even need a battery to operate. Apparently, the low volume output from a headphone jack is enough to drive these little speakers. They use small mylar drivers to bounce sound into the film canisters, which then project omni-directional sound waves. I wouldn’t expect stellar audio from these, and the maker freely admits that they have a decidedly “retro” sound quality.

Until now, they’ve only been available in Japan, but thanks to gadget importer Audiocubes, you can now pick up a pair stateside. At $55 a pair, they’re not necessarily a bargain, but they sure are different.

The tracking technology known as RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is showing up everywhere from grocery stores, to shipping containers, to gas station, to toll roads. Now, your intestines can join in the radio wave fun!

Kodak has filed this patent application for RFID tagged capsules that could be swallowed to track activity in a patient’s digestive system. The capsules would contain a tiny tracking chip which could be used to monitor a patient’s medication history, or to transmit other medical information to a nearby RF data collector. The pills would be designed to break down over time without harming the recipient.

While the idea might seem a little odd, it actually has potential to reduce the need for invasive medical procedures, as well as to ensure that patients take the proper dosage of their medicines.
