These woudn’t be the first lightsaber lamps that I’ve come across over the years. As a matter of fact, they’re not even the first lightsaber table lamps I’ve seen. But what’s cool about these ones is that they really look like the actual lightsabers from the movies, not some cheap plastic replicas.

The base of each of these 26 inch-tall lamps is a perfect replica of either the lightsaber donned by Anakin Skywalker, or the one Darth Vader later carried. The Anakin design features the symbol of the Jedi Knights on it, while the Vader one has the Empire’s seal. Both project the pattern onto the wall surrounding the shade, which makes for a cool effect too. Of course, you’ll want to go with a blue bulb for the Jedi, and a red bulb for the Empire.

You can find both the Anakin and Darth Vader lightsaber lamps from Firebox, where they’re available for pre-order now for about $110(USD) . They expect to ship in “8+” weeks, which could mean you’ll have one by April, or it could mean 100 years from now. Also, since they’re being sold in the UK, you’ll probably need to swap out the power cord or go with a power-converter to use them outside of England.

The lamp is made of poplar, colored translucent acrylic and colored paper and it measures 16.5 x 5.5 x 5.5 inches. The top part is detachable for easy access to the 60w bulb inside.

I’d bet there’s a pretty good chance you weren’t thinking about having your lamp 3D printed. Judging from the looks of these cool 3D printed lamps, you definitely should consider it.

These lamp designs were created using i.materialize’s 3D printed table lamp kit, which provides everything you need to design and output your own 3D printed lighting fixture. The 3D table lamp kit includes a lamp base, dimmer, halogen bulb, a metal base and fittings to hold the shade in place. Using a provided design template for popular 3D modeling software (including free apps like Google SketchUp and Blender) you design your shade and upload your 3D file it for printing.

Celebrate old school computing with this awesomely geeky wall sconce, made in the shape of an old 5-1/4″ floppy disk. Man, I haven’t used one of those in years – and I can’t say I miss it. Even with a double-sided/double-density floppy, I can’t even begin to fathom the number of floppies it would take to store what’s on my tiny little 128GB SDHC card. Still, it’s fun to reminisce, isn’t it? Write-protect tabs, FTW!

This floppy disk light is made from sturdy 1/4″ thick PVC, and uses LED backlighting to help it pop from your wall. While they’re very bright for LEDs, I wouldn’t expect this to provide sufficient illumination to read a book by. It’s really just an accent light. Also, don’t expect it to be 5-1/4″ square. It’s actually much bigger, at 12″x 12″. I suppose that’s good, but I wouldn’t have ever wanted to use a floppy that huge. Those heinous 8″ floppies were my limit.

If amber isn’t your color of choice, you can also order one with white, green, blue or red LEDs instead. The 5-1/4″ floppy wall lamp is available over on LuxChroma’s Etsy shop for $75(USD). Maybe someday we’ll look back and laugh at how much SD cards can hold too.

The whole world is all about green these days, and I’m not talking about money. There has been so much talk and fuss about global warming and climate change recently, that we all need to be more conscious about using our resources. And personally, I’m worried what kind of world we’ll be leaving our children and grandchildren one day (not that I have any yet.)

So it’s extremely refreshing to see concept designs like the Tulipa, which is a wind-powered street lamp that lights up the streets at night without need to be connected to the grid. It’s built with a wind turbine, transformer, and generator that takes wind energy and coverts it into electricity, which is then stored in the battery.

The day-night sensor detects once the sun has set below the horizon, and the LED light then illuminates. The Tulipa, designed by Mebrure Oral, almost looks too pretty to be a streetlamp, and is certainly more interesting that the solar lamps already in use in some places today. All I can say is, I never expect something green to actually look so good. (No alternate meanings intended.)

There’s even a handy spare power outlet on the back if you need to plug in another device. The light it emits is diffused, making it a nice ambient light source.

The lamp is definitely unusual, but it’s not just made for fun. It was also meant as a critique of the homogenized nature of construction materials in the U.S. It’s true that most light switches and outlets do look similar, especially in older homes. Hopefully, it will inspire people to use less ordinary materials and light switches when designing their homes.

A while back over, we told you about a cool lamp concept called “BANG!” which was supposed to let you”shoot out” the light with a gun. I was pretty sure the thing was just a concept, but it turns out you can now buy the thing.

I happened to stumble onto a product page for bitplay’s now-in-production BANG! Lamp over at Japanese mega-retailer Rakuten’s website today. It looks like the lamp remains largely unchanged from the concept, letting you take aim with the included handgun to turn the lamp on and off. Just shoot at the lamp, and not only does the lamp turn off, the shade actually tips over too.

Here’s a silly video clip showing how BANG! works, just in case the IKEA-like illustration above wasn’t clear enough for you:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The gun is basically just an infrared remote control, and that black band around the base is the IR receiver – but that doesn’t make it any less cool. As a matter of fact, I’d like a universal remote that looks like this so I can shoot my TV any time Real Housewives of… Anything comes on the screen.

The lamp measures about 18 inches tall, and is illuminated by a bright 10-Watt LED light. No word on when you’ll be able to get the BANG! Lamp outside of Japan, but you can grab one at Rakuten now for ¥26,000 (~$336 USD).

The light box is 12″ wide, 4″ deep and 5″ high. It’s framed in iron and is ready to be hung or simply placed on top of a shelf. I suppose you could also mount it on your ceiling. No one’s stopping you. The on and off switch is on the cord, but I don’t see why you can’t make a wall switch for it if you have the skills.

I like 3D printers because you can print damn near anything for any reason. Some designers set about creating a lamp that looks destructive and sort of like a healthy dinner wrapped in one. The lamp is called the Mushroom Cloud Shaped Nuke Lamp and it is designed by Veneridesign. The lamp was printed out of some sort of flexible white plastic.

The plastic body of the foot-tall lamp is ridged enough for the lamp to stand upright and the light assembly inside is a separate piece. If anything ever begged for an orange light bulb inside, this is it. The design certainly looks like the mushroom clouds I have seen in the videos of nuke testing back in the old days. It also looks more than a little bit like cauliflower to me too. It also reminds me of a completely frozen tree.

You can buy this cool looking lamp if you want, but only if you are loaded. The thing sells for $1,495 (USD) making it very expensive, but oh so cool.

Steve’s book light has a maximum output of 40W. Not only does it turn off when the cover is closed, its brightness is also dependent on how far the lid is opened. What a bright idea. Sorry about that.

My very first viewing of the animated short Luxo, Jr. was really the moment that cemented the fact that Pixar would always give it’s animations character and heart like no other studio – even today. I always loved how John Lasseter imbued these bendy desk lamps with so much life. While the original Anglepoise lamp seen in the animation pre-dates the short by over 50 years, this is the first time I can think of where you can carry one around with you wherever you go.

While Mustard’s Tiny Tim Booklight doesn’t have as many moves as Luxo or Anglepoise, the little reading light does still have charm and character. Tiny Tim measures about 5 inches high, and provides ample battery-powered illumination for reading your books. That is, assuming you haven’t ditched paper and moved to an e-Reader or an iPad for your reading enjoyment.

The Tiny Tim Booklight isn’t yet available in stores, but is supposed to start shipping at the end of June. Retail price for the lamp is £7.99 (~$13 USD), and you can probably convince Perpetual Kid to carry them since they sell other stuff from the same UK gift maker.

And speaking of inanimate lamps with personality, who remembers this classic IKEA commercial, directed by none other than Spike Jonze?

These beautiful Sensai speakers include lights so that they can serve as lamps as well as wireless speakers. There are a few different variations, including a suspension lamp, floor lamp, table lamp, and wall sconce.

Since they were designed to work with Bluetooth, you just need to be in the range of the speakers to play your tunes. They were designed by Decoma, and distributed by FDV group in their Alt Lucialternative Line.

The Sensai speakers are available in dark or light wood and you can choose between white, red, green, or blue bulbs, and they all offer dimmers. They look like a pretty nice way of listening to music in rooms like the kitchen when you don’t want to get out the full-on dock.

Actually this lamp doesn’t have anything to do with Katamari Damacy, but it sure looks like it, doesn’t it? Designer Paola Pivi’s Nice Ball is a hanging lamp covered with tiny replicas of 80 chairs and tables from the Vitra Design Museum collection.

To me, it looks like the Prince rolled his Katamari around a designer furniture store to create this lamp. About the only thing it’s missing for it to be complete is some little flailing people and the occasional pig or cow stuck to its outside. Maybe it’s just not big enough, and it can’t pick those up yet.

Given the fact that the tiny furniture replicas ost hundreds of dollars each, I can only guess that each of these lamp cost over $25,000 to make. Now that’s an expensive Katamari.

Here’s a cool way to add a little extra splash of color to your room without breaking the bank. These compact LED mood lights let you choose from 256 different colors using a clever touch-sensitive color chart on the side.

You simply use the color selector bar like a color slider on your computer, picking the hue you’re looking for with a touch of your finger.

The little lights each have three 1-watt LEDs, and are powered by a built-in USB rechargeable battery. Battery life is rated at 6 hours on a full charge.

You wouldn’t want to try and read a book by these, but that’s not what they’re designed for. They look like they’d be great as accent lights in a darkened or dimly-lit room, though. The official brightness is spec’d at 150 lumens for each one, but they don’t look quite that bright to me. Still, they look pretty cool to me.

If you remember, a couple of years back Philips introduced their similar Livingcolors LED lights, which allow you to adjust to a color of your choice, but they still cost over $150 each. While these cheap clones might not be quite as stylish or as bright, they sell for just over $14 (USD) each over at Chinavasion, so you could fill a whole room with them on the cheap.

For those of you who don’t recall, the NES Advantage was the big arcade joystick for the classic 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System. For those of us who grew up in the arcades, these things were so much better than those silly little gamepads. So I can’t decide if it’s awesome or sacrilegious that somebody is turning these classic controllers into lamps.

Given the fact that these controllers are actually pretty easy to come by, I guess that I’m okay with RecycledRetroGear’s gutting of the NES Advantage to turn it into a bedside or desk lamp. There’s not much more to it other than to say that other than the joystick, the rest of the controller is pretty much intact, making this a great addition to any retro gamer’s room.

You can get your hands on the NES Advantage lamp over at Etsy for $20.99 (USD). While you’re over there, be sure to check out some of the other fun recycled gaming bits over on RecycledRetroGear’s shop.

I understand that changing your light bulbs in the home from the normal incandescent to more efficient CCFL or LED lights can save you a bunch of money. The problem I have always had with LED bulbs is that the color light tends to be weird and the bulbs are just so damn expensive. I can buy a year’s worth of bulbs for the price of one LED bulb.

Philips has announced that it has the world’s first direct replacement bulb for the venerable 75W incandescent. The LED version produces 1100 lumens of light and consumes only 17-watts. That makes it much more energy efficient. The Philips offering has a color temperature of 2700k and a rendering index of 80. I have no idea how that corresponds to a normal light bulb.

The part I really like about the LED bulb is that they are good for 25,000 hours (about 3 years constantly on) each. The part I really hate is that each one of these bulbs will cost you $40-$45 (USD). You will be able to pick this bulb up in stores in Q4 2011. Would you pay that much money for a light bulb?

I admit it also looks a bit like a novelty with its design and is a bit on the bulky side as far as table lamp goes, but you have to give it an “A” in both creativity and effort.

The Secret Lamp is a table lamp and night lamp in one designed by Jongwoo Choi. You get to control how much light it emits by pulling back its topcoat to unveil the light. When you’re done, just stick the topcoat back and it fastens back into place with the magnets at the top of the lamp.

If you want to use it as a night light, just separate the cap from the body and there you have it. It also boasts that it conserves energy by accumulating energy while it’s switched off to provide the glow for the night light.

It’s still a concept design for now, but I think it’s a really clever one at that. I know I’d definitely want one for myself. (Mostly because I want to give the peeling thing a whirl, but also because I think the night light gives off a nice glow, too.)

Jason used three IKEA Tertial lamps, which are IKEA’s cheapest desk lamps at $9 (USD) a pop. He then made a hollow base out of plywood to house the electrical wiring, and used a bicycle wheel spoke to secure the lamps to the base.

Each of the arms can be moved independently, and the whole setup is attached to a dimmer. The end result? A cheap, yet versatile and classy chandelier. Awesome hack Jason. Now I’d like to see you make a desk fan out of a ceiling fan.

There’s no need to burn the midnight oil (or candle) anymore when you need to get some studying, reading, or work done on a night when your power dies on you. That is, if it was a really sunny day earlier and if you have one of these colorful and simplistic IKEA Solvinden Solar-Powered Table Lamps.

I’ve been hearing a lot about green and clean energy for the past few years now, so it was only a matter of time before people got around to making these lamps, don’t you think?

As you can see, IKEA’s solar-powered lamps come in four colors: two basic ones (black and white) and two bright ones (cyan and apple green.) They come with 3 rechargeable batteries that store energy from the sun via the solar panel found at the top of the lamp.

To charge your lamp up for a maximum usage time of four hours, simply put the lamp under the heat (or, more appropriately) light of the sun for a good 9-12 hours. You’ll need around 15 hours on a cloudy day.

They aren’t available for purchase online though, so you might have to take a trip down to your local IKEA store to get one (or two).
