So pet owners, you don’t have to worry – the FroliCat BOLT is basically a laser pointer for lazy people. Simply turn it on and projects a red dot and moves it in random patterns for 15 minutes, or until your cat (or dog, or baby) realizes what’s going on and attacks the gadget itself.

The FroliCat’s adjustable mirror allows you to direct the dot up to the ceiling if you want. Here’s the FroliCat in action, complete with jangly hoedown music:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

You can get the FroliCat at Amazon for $17.25 (USD). Ironically, the FroliCat has a manual mode; I think if you’re going to wave this thing around anyway then you’d be better off with a laser pointer.

Takara Tomy’s latest remote-control car is definitely unique. Not only does the Aero Spider Laser drive on walls or ceilings, it goes where you tell it to using a light gun.

The gun-shaped controller projects a bright red light beam (not sure it’s really a laser beam) where you want the car to go, and the car follows along. The vehicles stick to smooth surfaces using a reverse-fan mechanism that creates suction between the bottom of the car and the wall or ceiling.

Each car has a set of photosensors mounted into it that detect the light beams’ position and tell the car which direction to turn. Place the light beam in front of the car, and it follows, place the beam at the back of the car, and it turns around and starts following the light again. And if you thought that all sounded cool, wait til you get a load of this…

Convinced? The guy in the skintight blue suit has me sold already. In action, the cars are actually pretty cool. Here’s a good video clip showing off how the Aero Spider Laser works. And more people dressed in silly outfits for no particular reason. You gotta love Japanese marketing.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Aero Spider Laser cars start shipping early this month, and are available over for pre-order over at Hobby Link Japan for ¥6,000 (appx. $65 USD).

I can’t say whether or not this Proton Pack will actually trap ghosts, but from this brief glimpse, there is one thing I can say for certain: this badass project is sure to score the top prize at Halloween costume contests, and isn’t that worth more than a ghost in a box?

The entire costume–you didn’t think it was just the Proton Pack, did you?–took Instructables ghostbustin’ guru depotdevoid two years to perfect. Not two entire years, mind you, but two years of costume-compiling. I can’t say I blame him; if I made a costume this awesome, I’d wear it every year.

A khaki flight suit, lasers (!), props, and an Arduino are the key elements required to build your own Ghostbusters costume, though I also recommend such luxuries as time and enthusiasm. However, from the instructions, it seems like just about any big Ghostbusters fan could put this together, if they were dedicated enough… thanks to the handy guide, anyway.

Here’s another one of them MAVs that’ll soon be flying all over the place. A group of MIT students – Abe Bachrach, Anton de Winter, Ruije He, Garrett Hemann and Sam Prentice (I think I got +10 to my IQ after spelling their names) – developed an autonomous flight system that could sweep and analyze it’s environment in real-time. While a 10-year old human can also “analyze it’s environment in real time”, a 10-year old human can’t fly. Or use lasers to build maps. Thanks to the Bachrach et al, the robot in the picture can do both. It’s a quad-rotor helicopter packed with sensors and a laser. It’s specialty? The great indoors.

You see, it’s relatively easy (for nerds) to build a robot that can find its way to a target outdoors, thanks to the magic of GPS. But what if you want to search inside a building? GPS won’t help you there, believe me. I researched it extensively. If you don’t have a map of the building or whatever structure you’re infiltrating, you’re screwed. But more importantly, GPS receivers need a strong signal to work, something which you’ll have difficulty obtaining inside a building.

So the aforementioned MIT students came up with a laser scanner that sweeps the helicopter’s immediate area, and that along with some algorithm magic (yeah this is where I lose track of definitions) builds a corresponding rough three-dimensional map of the autonomous vehicle’s immediate environment, as shown in the image above. Now I need you to watch the video below and then answer one tiny question for me: when the narrator uses the word “we” and “us”, does he mean that they can control the robot remotely which means they can see the map that the laser sweep generates, or is the robot fully autonomous?

Maybe the chopper is the narrator, and it’s talking using lasers. I don’t know. I’m confused.

This offbeat watch design is merely a concept at this point, but I actually kind of like the idea. The Alessi Laser Shot watch is supposed to project the current time on your wrist using (frickin’) laser beams.

Designer Andy Kurovets envisioned this über-modern watch concept that uses a modulated laser scanner to projects the time onto the surface of your wrist. And he promises it won’t give you skin cancer. At least that’s what I heard – somewhere.

The design features a unique broken “o”-ring band that is slightly elevated from your wrist in order to provide sufficient projection throw distance.

Cool, no? Unfortunately, the design is only conceptual at this point, so if Alessi happens to be reading this blog – make these. People will buy them… so long as the laser doesn’t set your skin on fire.

The Sticky Light is an interactive plaything that’s capable of scanning movements in real time, and following them with a laser light beam.

The tracking technology, developed by the Department of Information Physics at the University of Tokyo’s Komuro Laboratory, Sticky Light uses a laser diode, a photodetector and a pair of beam-steering mirrors to automatically trace your movements. In its default mode, the Sticky Light will detect high-contrast objects placed beneath it, following the contour of drawings, hand movements or objects placed in front of its sensor. In addition, the laser interaction system can be used to produce interactive games like a tabletop multiplayer version of Pong, or even light pinball as shown in the video below:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

While the system is somewhat reminiscent of the multitouch capabilities of technologies like Microsoft’s Surface, the laser-based interaction really makes Sticky Light unique. Now if only they used high-wattage cutting lasers instead of a safe low-power red beam – that would be really cool.

If you’ve ever played with an Airzooka, you know how much fun it can be to blow away your office-mates without actually causing any real harm. Now you can have a much better shot at hitting your victims with a perfect blast of air, thanks to a built-in laser pointer.

Just flip on the red laser pointer, take aim, and fire a huge ball of air at your buddies, scattering their TPS reports everywhere. Lather, rinse, repeat. It never gets old. And when I say “never”, I mean “quickly”. Still, it looks like fun for at least a few minutes before your boss takes your toy away and puts it in his desk drawer until the end of the day.

Want your own Laser Airzooka? Just head on over to UK gadget shop I Want One Of Those, and plunk down £19.99 (about $33 USD). If you already invested $13 bucks in an original Airzooka, you can always just tape a cheap laser pointer to the top of it and save yourself a few bucks.

The Office of Naval Research – not to be confused with the Office of Navel Research, a pet project of the previous president – recently awarded defense contractor Raytheon a year-long contract to develop laz0rb33mz. No seriously, the US Navy wants to have a 100-kilowatt Free Electron Laser as a weapon that will be installed on naval warships. Marvel Comics Popular Mechanics explains: “A FEL uses superconducting electron accelerators to produce high-power laser beams that could target cruise missiles, airplanes or boats.” Uhuh. I see. That’s… I see.

Yeah I give up. I don’t even know what’s on the picture. I just find it incredible that the stuff I used to place under “fiction/nightmares” is coming true right before my eyes. Laser weapons? Are you freaking kidding me? The article added that the Raytheon contract was just the first step in a $150 million, three-phase Dr. Evil ONR program.

100-kilowatt laser weapons. Wow. And yet a lot of the problems that were already around when I was a kid are still here today. Like world hunger. Or civilians not having super powers or laser weapons. Seriously. Someone please do something about that.

Mitsubishi’s L65A90 LaserVue 65-inch Rear Projection HDTV is the world’s first laser-powered television, and the company claims that its laser-lit DLP delivers twice as many colors as the now stupid and old LCD and plasma HDTVs. If I may quote the L65A90’s tech specs… “Twice the Color Over 200% of HDTV.” WOW. Twice and over 200% in one sentence? This TV must be made of crystallized awesome sauce.

The L65A90 is so awesome that people who don’t even own the thing are giving it ZOMG LAZERZ! customer reviews. I’m not kidding. And what’s not to love? Naturally, the LaserVue supports full 1080p resolution for a super sharp HD picture. It’s got a viewing angle of about 160 degrees, it’s 3D-capable, and come on, it’s 65 inches of laser powered HDTV with twice the color over 200%! Plus it has 4 HDMI inputs, and it can detect inputs as they are plugged in, thanks to it’s Easy Connect feature.

The L65A90 is energy efficient too: it consumes only 135 W; Mitsubishi claims that that’s half of what comparably-sized LCD TVs would consume, and a mere third of what Plasma TVs gobble.

But its $7,000 USD price tag negates whatever customers will save off the electricity bill. Then again, if you’re rich enough to afford a $7,000 TV, I don’t think you care if it’s energy efficient or not. The important thing is that it’s a World’s First Something Something, and it has twice the color over 200%. Tell your butler to get three Mitsubishi’s L65A90s at Amazon; one for you, one for him, one for me.

[laservue spec sheet via devicepedia]

I saw this comic strip where everything that the characters needed for camping – pots, pans, tents, sleeping bags, bonfire, even a fridge – was tucked inside a swiss knife. It’s funny, sure, but it would really be neat if there were Swiss knives like that, ala Dragonball’s capsules. Victorinox‘ Presentation Pro doesn’t have a fridge in it, but it does have Bluetooth and a flash disk with fingerprint authentication.

There are three available flash disk capacities: 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB. Data stored in the Pro’s disk will be protected by 256-bit hardware encryption. Aside from the boring scissors, nail file, screwdriver, knife and key ring, the Presentation Pro also has a laser pointer and two buttons for “navigating slide shows.” Just what you need for those emergency Powerpoint shows in the garage or out in the jungle. Or wherever it is that adventurer handymen hangout.

Seriously though this is some sweet stuff. The Bluetooth is said to have a range of 100 feet. The flash disk also comes with software for things like backup and Outlook syncing. As you can see it’s detachable, very practical. We can see that Victorinox, who are celebrating their 125th anniversary this year, are keeping up with the times and are not just cramming random stuff into their army knives. Ben Heck would probably find this useful. Or not. I heard he uses ninjutsu to come up with his mods.

Prices for the Presentation Pro will range from $170 to $335 (USD), depending on specs. There’s also a Flight variant that doesn’t have the scissors and the knife so it won’t be confiscated at airports. I want a Camping variant.

The intricate perforations and curvy undulations are not only are a shining example of the seamless blending of technology and art, but also serve to create quite a spectacular display of light. Bathsheba is intrigued by the space between art and mathematics, and finds naturally recurring beauty in geometry as well as the new shapes that she creates.

Bathsheba enjoys working with technology and in this case has collaborated with Materialise’s MGX to create this design using their Selective Layer Sintering (SLS) rapid prototyping technology. She frequently works in 3D printing and has also mastered a technique called subsurface laser damage in the creation of her intricate etched crystal sculptures.

Who says geek fashion accessories are only for guys? These necklaces are perfect for the gamer girl in your life.

Created by San Antonio’s NBsCloset, each one of these tech-inspired pendants is custom cut and etched from fiber boards using a (frickin’) laser beam.

It seems that NB has a particular affinity towards Nintendo controllers, what with mini necklace versions of the Wii-Mote, the NES Zapper light gun, and the classic (but much maligned) Power Glove controller.

Of course, Nintendo controllers aren’t the only thing you can wear around your neck. If you’re ready to go back to the ’70s, try on this mini Speak & Spell (weird synthesized voice not included).

And if you’re more musically-inclined, how about a classic Casio SK-1 sampling synthesizer.

Or snap some pics with a Polaroid instant camera…

Each iconic necklace measures about 2.25″ at the widest point, and hangs from an 18-inch ball chain. Head on over to NBsCloset Etsy shop to order yours today. (Be sure to check out NB’s wife’s Etsy shop for additional designs)

If you just can’t get enough of Link’s Crossbow Training for the Wii, have I got an accessory for you. Sure the hour-long game already comes inside the package with Nintendo’s Wii Zapper, but that’s not really a crossbow, is it?

What’s kind of wacky about the weapon is that they’ve actually covered up the tip of the “arrow” with a dumb looking plastic ball, taking all the fun out of shooting an arrow through your TV screen. On the other hand, the crossbow does feature a laser sight which should do a fine job reflecting off your display and blinding you.

Priced at about $28, the plastic crossbow is more expensive than the Zapper and Link bundle, making it pretty impractical since that’s the only Wii game I can think of that has a crossbow as its primary weapon.

If you’re still convinced that just have to have this, head on over to DealExtreme to get your hands on one.

In the last year, we’ve gone from nary a Wii gun controller to a veritable plethora of available shooter accessories for Nintendo’s little white box. Still, with all the variety that’s to be found these days, this is the first time I’ve seen one with a built in laser sight to help you aim your shots.

The WiiMax (not to be confused with WiMAX) is one substantial light gun controller, designed to flip between “machine gun” and “rifle” modes thanks to a folding front grip. It’s got a fitted slot for holding your Wii-mote, and lets you plunk your Nunchuk into the handle. The laser sight runs on a pair of AAA batteries, and can be easily removed if it gets in your way.

Sure, if you’re willing bring out your inner MacGyver, you could just duct tape a cheap laser pointer onto any light gun. But for about $21, you might as well just pick up one of these, all ready to go. You can grab the WiiMax Wii Light Gun from DealExtreme.

They slip onto any keychain, and project a tiny red laser beam. While they definitely won’t destroy your enemies, you probably shouldn’t aim them into their eyeballs either.

While this strange pink device might look like some sort of modern hair dryer, it’s not. In fact, the Avurt IM-5 is all about keeping people out of your face, not in it.

You see, the IM-5 is actually a high-tech update to the old can of pepper spray. Instead of using a spray can filled with aerosol propellant, the gun uses compressed nitrogen to fire a nasty blast of pelletized PAVA pepper powder at attackers from up to 40 feet away. And just in case you have lousy aim, it’s got a laser sight to make sure you don’t miss. It can even rapid-fire up to 5 shots to take out multiple assailants.

The $300 device certainly isn’t as dangerous to handle as a Taser, but you’ll probably want to check with your local law enforcement before you start shooting at irritating coworkers with one of these.

The guys from online shop MyVirtualZone just tipped me off to these little playthings. The appropriately named Laser Top has a little laser beam that projects out of the side as you spin it around.

While I actually think the effect of the LEDs and the laser are pretty cool when its spinning, I think that the music that plays as it goes is about as ridiculous as it gets.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

For some odd reason, they decided to pick the Harold Faltermeyer “classic” Axel F from the 80s hit Beverly Hills Cop. I’m not sure if there was some misunderstanding that it was from Beverly Hills Top, but either way music would drive just about anyone up the wall after about 30 seconds.

Regardless, it is kind of a fun little toy, and when you put a laser beam on just about anything it instantly becomes about 10-times cooler. So get spinning and pick one up for just $5.95 here.

He even went the extra mile to add a virtual laser keyboard so the whole thing is nicely self-contained.
