Little Big Planet 2 Makes Playable Pac-Man, World Dominance Next

I always loved the world builder in Little Big Planet, which let you create all sorts of wondrous environments which go far beyond what the game was designed to do. As Media Molecule saw what people were trying to do, they amped up the creation tools with the upcoming Little Big Planet 2. There are already tons of interesting worlds starting to show up over on YouTube from the beta version of LBP2, and this one is probably my favorite so far – a fully-playable Pac-Man.

Posted by YouTuber TheFinalBurst (but built by someone named Andrmt) , this LBP2 Pac-Man not only lets you play a fully-functional version of the original arcade game, it even plays the original Pac-Man theme, and keeps score as you gobble dots and catch ghosts. It even goes one better than the original, letting a 2nd player control one of the ghosts. Here’s a video clip of the game in action…

Pretty slick, eh? Sure it’s not perfect, and the concept was attempted back in the original LBP already. But the very fact that you can make something like this inside of the LBP2 engine gets me all excited about the prospects of an entire retro arcade being built inside the game. This is all thanks to LBP2 incredibly flexible level-building tools, which now include some really advanced logic capabilities, as shown in the tutorials below…

Heck, after watching those videos, I’m pretty sure you’d be able to build an entire, functional computer system inside of your LBP2 world – maybe this is where Skynet gets its start?

Little Big Pirates of the Carribean: Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho, a Sackboy’S Life for Me!

Ahoy, ye landlubbers! Little Big Planet just got a little better. You see, Sony and Media Molecule just released their new Pirates of the Carribean add-ons for LBP.

It’ll be a pirate’s life for you when you install these new add-on packs. The costume kit ($5.99 USD) includes everything you need to dress Sackboy up as everyone from Will Turner to Elizabeth Swann to Davy Jones, complete with tentacle face. Of course, most of you will probably dress up as Jack Sparrow and wander around with a drunken swagger.

The premium level kit ($5.99 USD) adds 5 completely new Pirates’ themed levels, along with a variety of new materials, and some great new gameplay creation objects like a bubble machine, scuba gear and global water – sweet! There are even 4 additional music tracks – hopefully they included the familiar “yo-ho-yo-ho” one.

Little Big Planet Plays Video Game Classics on the PS3

I just started playing Little Big Planet on my PS3, and while the built-in levels are truly a sight to behold, the really wondrous thing about the game is all of the community content that’s starting to surface. I was buzzing about the LBP world last night when I came across some great arcade classics, all brought to life with the amazing level builder in the game.

Even I could build square blocks with the level creation tools, but this Tetris level takes block-building it to the next level.

This Sonic The Hedgehog Green Hill Zone level really blew my mind. It’s even got the original game music and a Dr. Robotnik boss battle.

Little Big Planet Calculator: You Do the Math

Let me start by saying that I’m really looking forward to playing in the virtual sandbox of the upcoming Little Big Planet for the PS3 when it hits stores later this month. But I could never imagine building something as amazingly intricate as this.

PlayStation 3 fanatic Upsilandre spent countless hours building this incredible calculator using the Little Big Planet Beta demo. Check out this YouTube clip of the calculator in action:

The calculator can do basic addition and subtraction, as well as decimal-to-binary conversions. Upsilandre used 500 individual wires to connect 610 magnetic switches, 430 pistons, 70 emitters, and a bunch of other stuff to make the calculator work. Here’s a screen grab of just a small part of the “electronics” which sit behind the display.

Now he just needs to make it multiply, divide and calculate tips. Like I said, I can’t wait to get my hands on this truly unique game to see what sort of amazing creations the community comes up with. For now, I’ll just have to live vicariously through Upsilandre.
