I’m going on another trip in a few days, and while I’m excited for some more sightseeing and some much-needed R&R, I’m not very excited about the prospect of packing.

Not because I’m lazy or anything. Actually, I’m pretty OC about it, because I have to write down a ton of lists (which I double and triple-check) before packing to make sure that I don’t forget anything. It’s the actual packing (or “stuffing everything into the suitcase”) part that I hate. I usually have to have someone else with me just to sit on the suitcase while I zip it close.

Well, not anymore, I hope – if the Pumpack eventually makes it way into production. Pumpack is a suitcase with an integrated pump that can vacuum pack your clothes so you can fit more of your stuff into it. We’ve already got suitcases with expandable hoods; and we’ve already got vacuum bags, so now it’s time to get suitcases with expandable hoods and vacuum pumps.

And if you’re the type who goes crazy over creases, then simply bring a travel iron with you. I’m sure it’ll fit easily with all the extra space you’ve got after vacuum packing everything. Still, it won’t do anything about the weight of your suitcase, and the ridiculous fees airlines are charging for bags these days.

The Pumpack is a design by Yejee Lee, Jongchan Mun, Seobin Oh and Woneui Hong and is a 2011 Red Dot Design concept winner.

This is one cool-looking suitcase. It comes from Ivorilla, a Frankfurt-based company, and it’s called the GasCase. If you’re looking to disguise your luggage as a can of gasoline, or just to have stand-out bags, definitely check these out.

I don’t know if carrying around a case that looks like it could be filled with flammable fuel is a good thing when you have to go through airport security, but hey, these look awesome. The bags are available in either Zippo-lighter style flip-top or traditional suitcase cabinet-door variants. And if you thought that these were made out of plastic, you’d be dead wrong! They’re made out of steel and mounted on heavy-duty trolley wheels.

This is kind of cool, but absurd at the same time. Steel luggage will weigh a ton compared to plastic or nylon luggage. You lose a lot of packing capacity to the actual weight of the bag. If you’re exploring and you need a heavy duty case, this might be the perfect one. For now, these cases are only available in Europe and prices start at around €100 (appx. $137 (USD).

Now I’m not one to pack a ton of stuff when I travel. As a matter of fact, if it doesn’t fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of me, it’s not going with me. On the other hand, I certainly know my share of people who would like to bring their entire closet with them if they could. This suitcase is for those people. Or people who like to travel with a couple of cinder blocks wherever they go.

This ridiculously expensive polycarbonate hardshell suitcase features electric motors in the wheels that can pull the bag along the floor at up to 3 miles per hour. Now don’t get any funny ideas about loading this thing up with 70 pounds of cargo and sending it hurtling through airport security to clear the way. That’s because the suitcase will only engage when you’ve started to set it in motion, it’s got at least 15 pounds of load, the handle is pulled out, and the case is tilted at just the right angle. Of course, you could always hack one to do your bidding without any of those checks and balances enforced. Me, I’d like to connect a remote control to one and see what sort of havoc I could wreak.

If you’ve got $1300 (USD) burning a hole in your pocket, give it to me. You can use next $1300 to buy one of these completely unnecessary bags over at Hammacher Schlemmer.

The Rockza Space Invaders bag is made from black PVC with a long shoulder strap. It features a rainbow of invader bitmap images (complete with “scanlines”) that are more reminiscent of later full-color versions than of the original arcade classic.
