It’s always a pretty wasteful scene at the office during lunchtime. Colleagues troop into the lunch room, unwrap their lunches that have been packed in either foil, plastic containers, or styrofoam packages that are thrown out after each use. And this happens every lunch hour. Just think of all the waste generated from disposable food packaging everyday, all over the world and what that’s doing to our environment.

That’s what designer Nick Burrows observed at his office too, which was why he came up with the concept for the Twist.

The Twist a reusable lunch bag that’s made from silicone and stiff aluminum wire. It’s microwaveable, so you can just pop the entire thing in the oven to heat up your food. Once you’re done, just wash it out and use it again tomorrow.

But most importantly, it’s reusable so that’s a whole lot of plastic bags not being added to the world’s land fills every day. It’s a simple design with a simple manufacturing process, which could make a meaningful difference in keeping our world green.

People who have been born with a silver spoon in their mouths are probably already accustomed to all the luxuries and finer things in life. So I don’t think it would come as a shock if you come across one such silver-spooner who has had a serving of the Oscheriyori, which is the world’s most expensive lunch box – said to be worth ¥18 million yen, or about $234,000 (USD).

You can buy a few really nice cars, put your kids through college, buy steaks to last you a the rest of your life – or you could blow over two hundred grand for a single meal in a gold lunch box. While about $168k of the value of the meal lies in the 3.3kg gold lunch box, that still makes for over $60k for lunch.

For that amount, you can expect to sample some of the world’s most rare and exotic food, but you get quite a typical selection for your palate in this lunch box: root vegetables, sushi rolls, sashimi, and other rice and meat dishes.

These insanely expensive lunches are being served up at the Takashimaya Restaurant in New York and are part of a promotion by the restaurant for the New Year.

Lunch boxes are fine. You can get them in almost any geeky flavor you want, but with the graphics already on them. That takes some of the fun out of lunch. It’s far better to bring a bagged lunch and draw your own geek art on the brown bag while you are eating.

These lunch bags were created by the world’s most awesome dad, for his kids. He spends his own lunch time creating these works of art and then gives them to his kids everyday. He has a whole Tumblr page devoted to them. This guy really knows how to draw and I propose that these have an entire geek museum to themselves somewhere.

My favorites have to be…I can’t even pick a favorite. They are all amazing. Do yourself a favor and hit the link above. You will call your own dad and scold him for not being this guy.

If you were around back when the original Star Wars films were in theaters, and the popularity was at its heyday, I bet you had a lunch box with Star Wars characters on it. I know I did. For the first three years of Grade school, I made my mom run all over town looking for one of those metal lunchboxes with Return of the Jedi on it each year. I was always bending them on the bus so they wouldn’t close.

Today you can occasionally find those metal lunch boxes in stores for your own kids. If your kids are like mine, metal lunch boxes aren’t cool anymore. I think more kids will appreciate the cool new R2-D2 soft insulated lunch kit. The kit is round and has the domed head of R2 on top with a zipper to keep it closed.

The lunch kit is not that expensive at $14.99 (USD). It measures 5¾” W x 5½” D x 11¼” H and has integrated sounds and LED light effects. At the press of a button, the effects activate. I can only assume it makes all those cryptic beeps we know R2 makes. I wonder how long it will be before your kid gets in trouble with the lunchroom lady for making too much noise with this thing.

Fans of the Nintendo DS game Okamiden will immediately recognize Chibiterasu, the game’s sickeningly-cute little wolf protagonist being served up in this tasty bento lunch box. The meal was created by by bento expert AnnaTheRed, who’s clearly got better knife skills than I.

In addition to the bento box, she also made a gomuku-sushi bowl, which isn’t officially a bento, but demonstrates some similarly intricate food-play skills.

I’ll leave all the careful descriptions of the foods Anna used to make these scenes to her blog article, but I will tell you that Chibiterasu is made from hanpen, which is made from a ground white fish, and detailed with seaweed, broccoli stem and red pepper. I can assure you that no actual wolves were harmed in the making of these meals.

Now I have no doubt that these were delicious meals, but I couldn’t bring myself to eat them. I’d just have to stare at them and leave them alone until they got good and moldy and I had to throw them out. The idea of eating little Chibiterasu is just too much for me to take.

Salami, kielbasa, cheese, bread–there’s all sorts of goodness in this cubewich! It’s got everything but real puzzle factor, because I’m sure if you tried to turn it, the whole thing would just fall apart, and that would be a waste. Guess you’d just have to eat it instead.

I’ve been trying to think of other foods you could do this with besides fatty and processed meats and cheeses, and I’m drawing a blank. I guess you could cube come chicken, but would it be the same?

For those of you who have put in your fill of time playing Bioshock, you know that Big Daddy can be one mean dive suit wearin’ mutha-flippa’. But now that he’s been transformed into a tasty lunchtime treat, he doesn’t look so imposing anymore.

This delicious Bento box was created by flickr contributor AnnaTheRed, and features completely edible versions of Big Daddy and his faithful (and creepy) companion, Little Sister.

If you happen to read Japanese, Anna has provided a detailed diagram which gives you a virtual “paint-by-numbers” to create your own. Best I can tell, Big Daddy is comprised primarily of seaweed, sticky rice, bread, sesame seeds, and eggs. Lil Sis appears to be more of a ham (and cheese).

Unfortunately, there’s no ADAM or EVE in the recipe, so you won’t get any special genetic powers (other than the special “food coma” plasmid) from chowing down on this happy meal.

Bioshock isn’t Anna’s only video game inspired Bento lunch creation.

A uniquely Japanese cultural phenomenon is Bento box lunches where the meal is dressed up with whimsical imagery so kids will be more inclined to eat their food. Check out this great example featuring the likeness of everyone’s favorite little Italian plumber, crafted entirely from edible items.

From what I can tell, Mario’s face appears to be made out of some sort of lunch meat, while his bright red hat looks like it might be from radishes or other colorful root veggies. But this clearly obsessed Bento fanatic didn’t stop with Mario.

She went on to create edible versions of Luigi, Bowser, Wario, Princess Peach and a bunch of other citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom.

If these don’t get your kids to choke down his or her bologna and Cheese Whiz sandwiches, I don’t know what else would.

Oddly enough, with all the foods used to make these clever creations, I couldn’t find a single mushroom anywhere in the whole bunch.
