Horny dudes, you can stop drooling on your iPad screens, Playboy has launched their first foray into the world of the iPad, with their new iPlayboy service. Contrary to early rumors, it’s not an iPad app, per se, but an iPad-optimized website with every issue of Playboy magazine ever.

For obvious reasons, Playboy couldn’t put their full issues in the iTunes App Store, but since iPlayboy runs in your web browser, it doesn’t have those constraints, and has full content from every issue (including all the naughty bits).

Designed for collectors, Playboy aficionados, and guys who just like to “read the articles,” the iPlayboy iPad website features every issue back to the debut of Hef’s magazine in December 1953, all the way up through the latest, the just released June 2011 issue. iPlayboy offers the basic image-viewing features you’d expect from an iPad app, swiping between pages, pinch-zoom on images (and you’ll be zooming alot), and a quick thumbnail browse mode. They’ve also OCRd all of the scanned issues, so you can search for anything you’re looking for throughout the archive. Here’s a quick overview video:

iPlayboy isn’t sold on a per-issue basis. Instead, you buy a subscription for $8 a month, $60 a year or $100 for 2 years for full access to all issues. You’ll need a Wi-Fi connection to really enjoy the experience, and since the developers relied on WebKit standards to build the site, you can actually access it from a Chrome or Safari browser on your desktop too (but they say this is not “officially” supported).

Check it out over at i.playboy.com.

If you’re done thinking about naked ladies, there’s more to read down here. It seems that the people at Playboy realize that you might not want to have a garage full of old magazines, and decided to give you a way to clear it out. Or better yet, if you never started collecting, you can still get them all.

I’m talking, of course, about the new 250GB Playboy Hard Drive. This drive comes packed full with every issue released up until the December 2009 issue. What’s amazing is that 56 years of magazines only takes around 50GB. You’ll still be left with that other 200GB to do with what you please. The $300 price tag is a bit salty, but I’m guessing it would be far more expensive to try and round up a copy of all 650 issues. It’s actually quite the bargain once you think about the cover price of all those back issues.

Just don’t try convince your wife or girlfriend to buy it for you for Christmas. That rarely ever goes over well.

I can certainly understand that the print publishing industry is taking a beating with the poor economy, and many marketers moving ad buys online. I get that the print industry needs to sell issues to stay afloat. What I don’t get is the rationale behind charging more for a cheaper-to-produce digital edition of the publication than the print version costs.

Is the way to save the print journalism business really to fleece the digital savvy early adopters of the iPad? Honestly, I for one will boycott your $4.99 per copy digital version of Popular Science. I can get the print version of the mag for a buck per copy if I order a subscription.

If you think you are going to charge me over four times as much for the privilege of reading your mag on the iPad, you my friend are dead wrong. In fact, I won’t even buy your print mag. It is inexcusable to me to charge four times as much for a product in digital format that has a mere fraction of the costs associated with a print magazine. I hope that all iPad owners stay far, far away from the overpriced publications trying to put themselves back in the black on the backs of digital users alone. I hope the market bears the PopSci digital publication right off the market and sends a clear signal that we expect prices to be reasonable.

I love CES week. So many cool new gadgets, never enough time. The latest drool-worthy bit of electronic gadgetry comes to us courtesy of a little company called Skiff. The Skiff Reader definitely caught my attention when I saw the photo below.

The Skiff Reader has a huge 11.5″ diagonal touchscreen, and a native resolution of 1200×1600 pixels at an astoundingly sharp 174 pixels-per-inch. Just how sharp is that? The screenshot below is only at 72 pixels-per-inch, and it’s already pretty impressive.

The next-gen metal-foil e-paper display (made by LG) is also shatterproof and crackproof. With a screen like that, this is truly the first e-reader that I’ve seen that could give newspapers and magazines a run for their money.

While it has a great large screen, it still has a super svelte thin profile magnesium body that’s every bit as nice as anything you’ve seen on any e-reader before it. The reader can run for about a week on a single 2 to 3 hour charge, and has built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and 4GB of on-board storage (and an SDHC slot for additional memory). In addition, Skiff has signed a deal with Sprint to provide 3G network access for downloading content, and they also will sell Skiff Readers in Sprint stores.

No word yet on pricing or a release date – only “later this year”, but the Skiff is definitely one to watch.

Regardless of how cool you thought they were, dropping 250 big ones on a piece of art instead of that new Wii might have been a turn-off to some of you. Here’s great news for those of you who loved them, but couldn’t spend the dough.

Responding to the strong demand for his work, artist Chris Lange has decided to produce high-quality digital prints of his collages for just $20 each. While they’re only about the size of an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper (about 1/3 of the size of the originals), you’ll be able to grab an entire set of his Nintendo creations for a song.

(P.S. Gotta give props to Chris for his latest creation, Mario, pictured above.)

Pictured here are several works which Lange has previously completed, but each piece is custom made based on subject matter of your choice. So whether you’re a fan of Link, Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, or even Starfox, you’re set. Banjo and Kazooie might be questionable, though, given their recent move to the dark side over in Redmond.

Chris takes orders for these custom pieces over on his Etsy shop. It’ll set you back about $250 for a 30″ x 20″ collage, but he’ll make other sizes on a custom quoted basis too.
