Hack A Day forum member arfink was browsing through the items at a thrift store when he stumbled upon a Magic 8-Ball and a camera. The total cost of the items? $1.35 (USD). But the amusement he has obtained from the combining the two has been priceless. Arfink removed the all-knowing guts of the Magic 8-Ball and replaced it with this:

The flash of the used camera he bought is in there, waiting for its victim. Thanks to a mercury tilt switch from an old thermostat, anyone who tilts the Magic 8-Ball will get an eyeful of light. That’s what you get for consulting a toy about your decisions in life!

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

As you saw in the video, arfink also connected a switch to disable the flash. This will let him conserve the battery until the next victim comes along. Get the lowdown on the hack at the Hack A Day forum.

The Fortuneball uses a computerized fortune prediction system that draws on the theories of astrology, numerology, the I-Ching and numerology to predict your fortunes. You input your date and time of birth and the ball can predict your fortunes in the areas of your love life, wealth or wellbeing, in five degrees of intensity by changing the color of its crystal orb.

While I do think all this is a bunch of new age nonsense, it’s still a fun desk gadget and a great improvement over the old “My sources say no” or “Signs point to yes”. The Fortuneball retails for
