Back at the beginning of August, we mentioned that Foxconn was looking at replacing about 150,000 workers with robots. The reason for this is more productivity and better quality for things like the iPhone from Apple that Foxconn builds. Foxconn is apparently hard at work on the iPhone 5, according to DigiTimes.

Foxconn’s (for now) human workers are right now said to be churning out 150,000 iPhone 5 smartphones each day. At that output Foxconn would be getting Apple somewhere in the area of 5 to 6 million iPhone 5′s for later this month.

That is depending on what rumor you believe. Some still say the iPhone 5 will launch later in September, while others point to October. One rumor also claims that the iPhone 5 will be offered to all major carriers in the US, which would be a first.

The sad part is that even at these production volumes, we all know once the iPhone 5 lands it will be sold out in hours and the delays will be as long and irritating as ever.

Got an idea you’d like to prototype? A 3D model you want to see realized? Well, there’s good news with today’s announcement that Sculpteo, an online 3D printing service, is now available in the United States.

The Paris-based Sculpteo lets you upload 3D files in OBJ, 3DS, STL, SKP and other formats. They’ve also got a growing library of 3D models in their online gallery that you can choose from and have them reprint for you. They can even handle forms with moving parts.

Objects can range in size from 2-inches to 10-inches, and you can choose from either a durable white plastic or a full-color version suitable for display, but not for jointed or thin objects due to their plaster-like consistency. Prices vary depending on the size and volume of the materials used, and the Sculpteo site automagically calculates the price in real time.

So what are you waiting for? Customize and render your first 3D printed possession now over at Sculpteo now.

When Hewlett-Packard promised to make 3D printers more affordable for the masses, I’m pretty sure they didn’t mean bums like you and me who just want to print 3D models of bacon, Patlabor and Olivia Munn (not necessarily in that order) will be able to get one. But yeah, HP’s Designjet 3D printers will be for sale starting this May, although for now they’ll only be sold in Europe.

The printer “turns three-dimensional CAD drawings into tangible prototypes by extruding partially molten ABS plastic in extremely fine layers one atop the other, forming the entire 3-D model in a single piece from the ground up.” The Designjet 3D can only print using ivory-colored plastic…

…while the Designjet Color 3D can print using up to 8 different colors.

I hope in the future we can just download an image of anything we want and then print it in 3D. But that will probably result in the rise of collectible toy pirates.

HP says that retail prices for their 3D printers will start at €13,000 (approx. $17,500 USD). If that’s too rich for your blood, you could always just spend $1,000 on a Makerbot.

Market intelligence firm iSuppli has completed their preliminary analysis of the costs to manufacture Sony’s Playstation 3 consoles. It looks like the two PS3 models (20/60GB) will lose between $241 and $306 each, not including the cost of accessories such as cables, controllers, packaging or shipping.

The estimated material and manufacturing cost for the $499 retail, 20GB PS3 console is $805.85 and the $599 retail, 60GB console is estimated to cost $840.35 to build.

It’s not uncommon for new consoles to be sold at a significant loss, with the aim to gain market penetration, sell high-margin games and accessories and to eventually lower production costs. Just a year ago, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was estimated to be losing up to $200 per console, and now is produced at an estimated $75 profit. That all said, with concerns about limited availability of parts and launch titles, it may be several years before Sony will be able to make a profit on the PS3.
