Escher’s Relativity is Possible in Minecraft

Gamers and Escher go well together. The artist’s famous lithograph Relativity looked even more impossible – and way more lethal – when converted into a Portal level. But Redditor/miner of crafts/illusion-breaker bergenco takes the same lithograph and makes it make sense. I’m not sure if he just ruined the point of the artwork or made it more awesome.

It took bergenco about 5 to 6 hours to shatter the illusion. On second thought, I think this version looks less weird because no one’s walking on any of the stairs. Put some pigs in there bergenco! Get lost in the high-res shots at imgur and Mediafire.

Relatively Portal: If Escher Worked at Aperture

As if turrets and lasers were not troublesome enough, Kasper Filipsen adds multiple gravity wells into the equation in this dizzying M.C. Escher-inspired Portal scene. It’s a stage only GLaDOS could love.

The piece is of course a mash up of Valve’s hit game and M.C. Escher’s lithograph Relativity. Even if you didn’t know what it was called chances are you’ve seen it somewhere before:

Zelda Totally Should Have Had a Portal Device

I’ll try and keep this one pretty short and sweet. Now that I’ve seen this video clip of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past with the small addition of an Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, I can never envision playing the game without one.

For that matter, I want a portal gun in EVERY game now. I can only imagine how handy it could be in everything from Pac-Man to Gran Turismo to Halo. It really should be standard issue equipment in all games, don’t you think?

Sesame Street Fighter

There’s something just so wrong, it’s right about this Street Fighter and Sesame Street mashup.

Artist gavacho13 combined classic characters from the children’s TV show with the ultimate fighting game to create some really insane new characters with names like Kernie and Beryu, Pig-Li, C. Monda and Baldog.

In a split second, my childhood memories have at once been defiled and supercharged. Check out the complete Sesame Street Fighter collection over at gavacho13′s deviantART gallery.

Tetris + Pong = Tetripong

Hey, you got your Pong in my Tetris! Say, you got you Tetris in my Pong! Wait a second? Are these two great tastes that taste great together?

That’s what coder Jayenkai thought when he built Tetripong, a major mashup between the two retro classic games. While the objective of the game is basically the same as Tetris – stacking blocks neatly together – you have to deal with pesky Pong balls bouncing around and mucking up your handiwork. If it sounds weird, that’s because it is. Maybe this video clip will help you understand what’s going on:

ROM Check Fail!… Retro Arcade Games Go Berzerk

Have you ever loaded up a retro arcade game with MAME, only to be greeted with an error message about those bad ROMs you downloaded 2 years ago? Well one enterprising developer decided to take that idea and actually turn it into a game.

The chaos that ensues in ROM CHECK FAIL! is one that really needs to be seen to be understood, but basically, the virtual arcade machine starts out with a failed startup sequence, and proceeds to land you in a warped 8-bit game mashup, where worlds continuously collide.

One second, you’re controlling Mario as he navigates the Mushroom Kingdom, and the next minute Pac-Man is getting killed by tumbling Asteroids. To give you a better idea of the mayhem, here’s a video clip of the game in action:

SNES Wii Console Case Mod

Have a hankerin’ for some old Super Nintendo games, but don’t want to spend all your cash on Virtual Console downloads? French game modder Kotomi has just the solution for you.

He’s taken a Super Nintendo console and smashed it down into the case of a Nintendo Wii . The appropriately named “Nii” console looks just like a Wii, but instead of Wii discs, you plug your classic Super Nintendo cartidges right into the front, and control them with a Wii Classic Controller. I especially like the blue LED ring around the SNES cartridge slot. Great job, Kotomi!
