I know, I know the pun doesn’t make sense, but so does Cthulhu. And that’s the theme of this product so I was actually being clever. I just didn’t realize I was being clever that way. And that’s one of the reasons why the folks at Toy Vault are cleverer. The other reason being their indoctrination of crowd funders to back their Cthulhu Knitted Ski Mask.

Come brethren, summon your browsers and head to Kickstarter. A sacrifice of at least $20 (USD) gets you a Cthulhu Knitted Ski Mask. May your fellow skiers or robbers have mercy on your soul.

Some don’t work that well, while others work, but are bulky. Then there are those that are just plain silly. The AIRE mask falls into the latter category.
First off, it makes you look like some kind of comic book villain. Second, it makes you look like a comic book villain. The AIRE concept comes from Joao Paulo Lammoglia and uses the power of your breath, which it converts to electricity, using tiny wind turbines. Just keep it connected to an iOS-powered device, breathe normally and you are charging. Good idea, but let’s not do this one.

Luckily this is only in the concept stage at the moment. Otherwise we would see these all over the streets and it would look like a gathering of the League of Evil Geniuses.

I’ve seen the Space Invaders featured on everything from waffles to cutting boards to underwear – but this is honestly the first time I’ve seen those pesky alien invaders on a dust mask.

The guys over at vogmask are offering their organic microfiber protective masks in a variety of stylish patterns, and have even covered one with a bunch of 8-bit Invader-style icons. But these aliens aren’t here to destroy your bases, they’re designed to keep dust and allergens out of your lungs, and clean air in.

Yes, I know they’re not the official Space Invaders aliens, but they capture the spirit of the game – without need for silly licensing deals, right? They still get the point across, and are certainly way better than some plain old white paper mask.

If you’re into retro gaming, and also want to keep all sorts of nasty stuff out of your nostrils, head on over to vogmask now, and grab an 8-bit dusk mask for just $20 (USD).

The Beardski Ski Mask gives the gift that keeps on giving: a super huge beard. Once you have a beard, girls start liking you, you have something to stroke while you’re thinking, and girls still like you when you talk about the Doctor Who Hockey Jerseys you saw online! In addition to putting some good looks into your bowl of ski salad, which, curiously, lacks the ability to ski, the Beardski Ski Mask also has some practical benefits. It’s water-resistant, so you won’t get bogged down with melted snow (water, in most cases) when you face plant. Also, your entire face and neck area will be protected from frigid winds and the powerful claws of angry ski yetis. (No, the yetis will still kill you, but you’ll be warm as you die!)

There are several types of Beardski Ski Masks available: the Zeke, Pirate, Prospector, Viking, and Biker all have different geeky colors of beards, so all you have to do is pick your favorite. Each one comes with a pair of goggles attached to the mask and beard, and you get all of that for just $30! If you get one of these geeky masks, everyone will know that you’re not one of the people who needs to read the Beards for Dummies infographic. “Was I supposed to click on that?” Yes, unless you already have a Beardski. “I do not have a Beardski.” Then why are you still here? “I’m washing the dishes like you ordered me to.” Oh, I see. Carry on, before you take an arrow to the knee and get demoted to Lenny’s spot of churning the butter.

The Beardski Ski Mask is super geeky, and one of the coolest ski masks around. If you’re appetite for masks has not yet been satiated, check out the Mask-Bot and the Real-f Masks, which will keep you up at night for decades. You will be ninety years-old, and unable to sleep.

Ladies, how’d you like it if there was a beauty treatment which promised to reduce wrinkles, redness, scars and acne, all without any fancy dermatologists involved. How would you feel if I told you you had to wear a mask that made you look like Jason from Friday the 13th in order to reap such rewards?

Well ask, and you shall receive, courtesy of the “Magic LED Beauty Mask.” This ridiculous looking contraption claims to work all sorts of wonders for your skin in 7 to 21 days just by pounding the crap out of it with bright red LEDs. Supposedly, it does this by encouraging collagen and elastin regeneration by “stimulating fibroblast activity.” It all sounds like it’s grounded vaguely in medical science, but I still have my doubts. Here’s a quick instruction diagram, in case you’re curious how it works:

Sold? I thought so. Now, I know there are legitimate dermatological procedures which use lasers to treat skin problems, but this just seems like some sort of “wonder cure” which is more likely to give you a headache than to actually do anything for your skin. I suppose if it doesn’t work, at least you’ll have a cool mask for Halloween next year.

If you’re really keen on trying this thing, you can order a caseload of them wholesale over at Made-in-China, or if you just want a single one, Focalprice is retailing them for $199 (USD). Or, you could just buy a couple of these and strap them to a hockey mask.

I remember this fight I had with my sister when we were much younger. It was around Halloween, and we were fighting over who would get to wear the princess costume my mom had rented earlier. It was pretty close to the October 31st, so she only managed to bring one home. At the height of the fight, I remember yelling out at my sister: “You should probably go as yourself – a spoiled brat!”

And to help take those sentiments further – and in the literal sense – there’s the 3DPF Masks by REAL-f. These are custom-made and extremely realistic masks that could pass off as an authentic replica to your face. 3DPF stands for 3 Dimension Photo Forms, and they’re available as a mask or as a full bust of your head.

These masks are made by taking photos of your face from various angles and molding a three-dimensional copy from vinyl chloride resin. The method is so detailed, that even blood vessels and iris details are copied accurately onto the mask.

These masks or busts don’t come cheap either. The first mask will cost you a whopping $3,920 (USD), with each additional one priced at $780. Going for a bust will set you back $5,875, with each additional one priced at $1,960.

StarWarsRemix is a collaboration between Noah and Mica Scalin, Emma Beddows, and Scott Walker. The goal is to make Star Wars characters, things or vehicles out of everyday objects. It’s a pretty cool idea, and anyone can submit their projects. Freehand Profit is the guy behind the MASK365 project.

Years ago, when SARS first broke out, people wearing face masks while they did their daily chores was a common sight. Now I have to admit, that freaked me out a bit and I immediately went out and bought a few dozen masks myself.

But one reason I disliked donning them was that it seemed to scare people who saw me sporting it.

Maybe it’s because they can’t tell I’m smiling as they approach. Maybe it’s because some people assume the worst if they see someone wearing a face mask. Or maybe it might be because I have creepy/scary/freaky eyes (who knows?)

Well, the Masclear Face Mask (JP) clears all that up because it’s literally a clear mask. Instead of a fibrous or cloth mask, Masclear is actually a transparent plastic mask that can serve the same purpose (ie. it keeps a person’s saliva and breath from spreading by serving as a barrier.) It’s also available in two sizes, small and large, to make sure that it’ll fit the wearer just right.

So what do you get when you put together a brilliant professional prop builder and the love of creating techie stuff? Stunning speaker systems, that’s what, if you happen to be Richard Grant.

Most likely you wouldn’t be familiar with his name, although you might have already seen some of the fruits of his labor in feature films like Alice in Wonderland, TRON, Imaginarium of Dr.Parnassus, and Band of Brothers, to name a few.

His new venture is creating something you can own, use, and display, right in your very own home: his Fidelity-sound speaker systems.

Some of the designs featured on his site are the Ghanaian Ancestor Mask, the Droid, and an Italian Portraiture. Most of these speakers are special order so you’d have to contact Grant directly via email to set up the purchase.

Only the Ghanaian Ancestor Mask speaker has been set with a price, tagged at around $1,200 (USD) per pair plus an extra $150 for shipping.

The prices are pretty steep, but you can also view these speakers as a work of art to justify the price. That, plus the fact that they’re all designed and made by a renowned professional propsman.

I was just watching Revenge of the Sith on Spike last night, so I’ve had Star Wars and stormtroopers on the brain since then. So I was doing a search this morning when I came across this thing. What you’re looking at here is a leather motorcycle mask based roughly on the shape of a stormtrooper’s helmet. At least the bottom part.

This menacing mask was made by Etsy seller EpicLeather, and is hand-crafted from Veg Tan leather, with rivet accents. It’s lined with foam and suede for comfort. The mask’s creator says that he’s worn one on his bike at up to 85MPH, and it provides great wind resistance (although he’s quick to point out that it’s not a safety device).

While the mask pictured here is in a natural color, the stormtrooper mask can be ordered in a variety of colors, including white – which is the only color that I think makes sense. You can get your hands on one over at Etsy for $199.99 (USD).

Honestly, if I saw a dude getting off his bike wearing one of these in the brown leather, I’d think the apocalypse was upon us. On the other hand, if I saw him wearing one in white, with a matching helmet, I’d probably go up to him and start quoting lines from Return of the Jedi.

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has had a few rough weeks. Aside from the much publicized announcement by hacker group Anonymous about an impending take-down of the company’s sites because of the action they took against another hacker, Geohot, they recently had to hurdle another attack on their system where the perpetrator’s walked away with over 12,700 credit card numbers and information from 24.6 million user accounts. Other than the attacks, the company’s PlayStation Network also experienced some intermittent service due to server upgrades, much to the inconvenience of a lot of gamers.

So what does SOE do? Give away free stuff, that’s what!

If you were one of the users who was affected by these, then you’re set to receive a free Batman-inspired mask and 30 days of subscription credit (plus one day for each day that you were unable to access the service.) Further information on how you can get your hands on these masks will be made available soon by Sony.

Now that’s how an apology should be done. Maybe a cape would be in order for next time?

There has been a big push in recent months from makers of sunglasses and premium eyewear to get people to buy their own set of 3D glasses for theaters and use in homes with passive 3D gear. One of the geekier and cooler sets of 3D glasses we laid eyes on were the Oakley TRON offerings. The downside to those TRON glasses was that the things were $150 a pair.

A new line of 3D eyewear that is RealD certified for kids 5 and up has landed from Hasbro branded just in time for little ones to beg for when watching Transformers: Dark of the Moon when it hits this July. The 3D eyewear looks like the top section of Optimus Prime’s head and there is a Bumblebee version as well.

The Transformers 3D eyewear will hit stores May 16 and will be cheap enough that parents will have a hard time turning little ones down at $9.99 per mask. I know I would totally pay a premium at the box office to get my kids these cool glasses rather than the plain ones they normally wear.

He was recently featured in an episode of CSI called Pool Shark and let me tell you that I must have watched the opening scene about 10 times because the music was so good (if you’re wondering, it was the track Some Chords that was playing).

Anyway, if you want to create an awesome Deadmau5 mask, then check this Netduino-powered one that lights up like a Christmas tree thanks to LED power. It actually ‘listens’ to the music that’s playing and displays colors on the beat. It was built by Wabash9000 for this year’s Halloween festivities.

It does look like the pouch for french fries used by fast food chains, but the FireScuba could be one life-saving product. While it may not be as efficient as a gas mask or smoke hood, it’s main advantage is its size and form.

I think I can fit a couple of these in my wallet. As DVICE‘s Michael Trei said, the best smoke hood won’t be able to help if you don’t have it with you when a fire breaks out. The FireScuba is made of nothing but cardboard and a carbon filter, so not only will it be easier to carry, I’m sure it’s also a hell of a lot cheaper to make than a gas mask.

Obviously it still needs to be tested, but the designer is onto something here; I hope the FireScuba becomes an actual product. I guess it all depends on how efficient the carbon filter is in trapping smoke.

Found hidden amongst the millions of items for sale over on eBay, Cyb3rBurn’s “Cyber Rave Goth Trance LED light-up Halloween Gas Mask” will definitely draw attention the next time you’re hanging out with your friends on the dance floor. And when the riot police show up and raid the place, perhaps you’ll have a few extra seconds of fresh air before the tear gas gets to you.

And even if it doesn’t protect you from serious airborne threats, at least you’ll look cool while you’re gasping for your last breath. This oddity can be found over on Cyb3rburn’s eBay store for $39.99 (USD).

Like to go swimming with the fishes? This new underwater mask can snap pictures of your aquatic journey as you dip beneath the surface.

Thanks to a built in digital camera, Liquid Image’s new Underwater Camera Mask will let you capture photos or video of whatever you see while you swim. Just look through the view port, and press the capture button to snap your pix. A crosshair inside the mask indicates the center of the frame you’ll be capturing, and easy-to-see LEDs tell you the camera’s current mode. While you won’t be able to go deep-sea diving with the mask on, it will hold up for depths up to 15 feet of water, so it’s perfect for casual snorkeling.

The company plans on rolling out the camera at the upcoming 2008 CES show in January, and plans on releasing both 3.1 and 5.0 megapixel versions, with prices starting at $99 USD.
