There are only a few 3D movies that I’ve seen that were actually worth it. Most of the others were somewhat disappointing, but check out this PMP that’s supposed to do 3D without any glasses. It’s called the Gadmei P83 PMP from Marvel Digital, and hopefully it won’t harm your eyes when you use it, because we’ve all recently heard the (not so) shocking news that 3D isn’t good for your eyes.

I’ve never really been a fan of 3D. Maybe it’s because I wear glasses most of the time, and putting on 3D glasses on top of them is just plain awkward. However, this little PMP lets you enjoy 3D without using any glasses. It’s got an LED backlit lenticular LCD panel with a 3D engine that can display native 3D content, as well as convert 2D to simulated 3D on-the-fly. It’s got an 8-inch screen, with a 1280×768 screen resolution, and onboard storage of 4GB.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The good news is that it costs only $169 (USD). Too bad you’ll probably still get a headache from watching it.

Most of the personal media players on the market are pretty much the same thing. They are generally boxy devices that look like big MP3 players with a color screen. iRiver has a new PMP called the P8 that looks nicer than the typical PMP. The new P8 has big 5-inch touchscreen and a very slick user interface that looks like something Apple would cook up.

The screen has widgets for different things functionality and large icons for music, video, FM, pictures, and eBooks. The native resolution of the screen is 800 x 480 and the P8 will support HD resolution video playback when connected via HDMI to your TV. The device also supports just about all the file formats you could need.

The P8 will play AVI, WMV, MKV, and XviD video formats. It supports MP3, WAV, WAM, OGG, FLAC, and APE audio formats as well. It will also store eBooks and voice memos too. The P8 will come in 8GB and 16GB versions and both of them will have expandable storage up to 32GB with microSDHC cards. For some reason, the P8 is only available in Russia at this point, but perhaps it’ll show up around the world with time. Pricing is unknown at this time.

Most of the cheap Chinese game console knockoffs do just one thing – play old 8-bit NES or Famicom games. Some of them don’t even do that. Here’s one console clone that claims to do way more than those.

The P1-4000 (aka PI-4000) Game Station may look a whole lot like a PS2 Slim, but it’s actually a media player, capable of handling a whole bunch of video file formats, as well as audio and e-books. The console can play videos in RM, RMVB, AVI, MKV, WMV, VOB, FLV, ASF, DAT, MP4, 3GP, MPG, and MPEG formats, and audio in MP3, WMA, DRM WMA, OGG, APE, FLAC, WAV, and AAC. It can play video at up to 720p resolution through its HDMI output.

The thing is also supposed to play all PlayStation 1 games, as well as Flash games written for PC versions of Flash 4-8, and Flash Lite 1-3 (assuming they use ActionScript 1 or 2). So you won’t be able to play the latest and greatest games on here, that’s for sure.

It’s got 4GB of built-in flash memory, as well as support for SD cards up to 32GB or USB storage devices. It comes with a pair of wired controllers that look just like the PlayStation 2′s controllers, along with an IR remote for controlling media playback. It also includes 8 DVDs filled with games (which I imagine you’ll have to copy over to flash memory from your PC). I have no idea what these games are, or if any of them are illegal, so this is definitely a Caveat Emptor kind of situation. That said, I dug up these photos which show the console playing some games:

If you’re willing to take a gamble on this thing, you can get your hands on the P1-4000 Game Station over at DealExtreme for about $92 USD. Of course, for about the same price, you could just buy an actual PS2.

When I was a kid, I collected my share of baseball cards. I was particularly fond of a line of cards called Sportflics. These cards were made of cardboard like all cards, but when you moved them back and forth, the image on the card would change. A new trading card is set to come that makes those Sportflics cards look dumb.

The new cards come from a company called Panini America and will be offered with four different basketball player cards to start. Apparently, the cards will be stuffed into random packs of five cards that sell for $20 per package, and the cards will be limited inserts into the retail packages. The cards have a small LCD screen on them and are still made of cardboard.

That screen is able to show about 20 minutes of video content to the user and it has 2GB of storage. The user can upload more audio or video content to the card as well via USB adapter that is included.

The U100 is said to be heading to Korea “later this year” which could be months away or in a few weeks, no one knows. The device has a 3.1-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 320 x 480 and can be had with 16GB, 8GB, or 4GB of storage inside.

It also includes WiFi, an FM tuner, and a microSD card slot for expansion. The thing supports just about all major file formats for audio, video, and photos. The battery is said to be good for 11 hours of video playback and 50 hours of audio playback. Pricing and availability are unknown. iRiver has also released a short promo clip showing off a little more detail on the U100.

Designers Chih-Wei Wang and Shou-Hsi Fu think that in the future, music albums could be packaged not just in a compact medium, but one that integrates a music player as well. Their concept device Skinny Player is a lot simpler and thinner than the iPod Shuffle, incorporating storage, a battery, a play/stop button and speakers into a Band-Aid-like form factor.

Like its inspiration, the Skinny Player adheres to the user’s body. This is not just practical but essential to the device, because it will use the person’s body heat to recharge its batteries. Isn’t making stuff up a lot of fun?

Right off the bat we can see that this concept has a couple of problems. First of all, it has no headphone jack, and I doubt that thumb-sized speakers will do justice to any piece of music. I’d also be worried about the environmental effects of a one-trick device like the Skinny Player. I can see myself neglecting to use or even properly dispose of the albums that I don’t listen to anymore. But I think future portable music players could take a couple of cues from this concept, especially the continuously charging battery.

I don’t know a lot of kids, but I’m betting they’d prefer to play on the iPhone, Nintendo DS or PSP rather than the SNES or NES. If they even know what those two are. But I think there’s still a lot of us 80s kids that’ll find Chinavision’s all-in-one gadget a hoot. It’s a media player that also has a built-in NES and SNES emulator.

Can you see that? A mile away? Yeah, I think that’s Nintendo’s lawyers. Before they get here, let’s rundown the specs and features of this device. It has a 7-inch LCD, A/V in and out connections, a USB port and even an SD card slot, so you’re pretty much covered there in terms of connections.

Yes, a couple of CDs containing hundreds of NES and SNES ROMs are also bundled. The Nintendo lawyers just put on their jetpacks, and are headed towards Chinavision’s headquarters. But hey, you’re on the Internet, so you can easily overtake them. You know that it’s dangerous to go alone, so take this device for $175 (USD). Warp to Chinavision’s website to order.

What would have happened if you could have had an iPod, a laptop, or a cellphone all the way back in 1977? Designer Alex Varanese decided to go back in time with his modern gadgets to see what life might have been back some 30+ years ago, but with today’s tech.

Alex’s series, ALT/1977: We Are Not Time Travelers envisions an alternate 1977 in which he was able to go back with his knowledge of 21st century technology, and market it to the retro-disco set.

I can’t decide which item I like the best, but there’s something about that “Pocket Hi-Fi,” complete with ABBA playing on it that’s pretty priceless. Although the 1977 LapTron 64 looks mighty capable, despite its period-appropriate woodgrain paneling.

Great names on those portable video games too. Pung, Flogger, Place Invaders and Asterisks. All of my favorites – if I lived in a parallel universe, where RCA Videodiscs beat both Betamax and VHS, and the Fairchild Channel F won the console war.

You can check out the full set of Alex’s ALT/1977 illustrations over at Behance.

The handheld media player market is so crowded at this point, you really need to do something special to stand out. This PMP from China strives to differentiate itself with a large high-resolution screen and a form-factor reminiscent of a small tablet PC or e-reader.

The Onda VX560 features a nice big 7-inch screen with a sharp 800×480 display resolution. But one of the really cool things about the VX560 is that it can play full 1080p HD content via an HDMI connection, so you can use it as a high-def media player for your big-screen TV too.

While HD content is supported in H.264 (MKV) format, the player can also handle RM / RMVB (including RealVideo8/9/10 coding), AVI, MOV, FLV, MPG, VOB, and DAT formats. It’ll also work as a full e-Book reader with support for CHM, PDF, HTM, UMD, and PDB formats and text-to-speech book reading too.

Although it looks like a mini-tablet, it doesn’t appear that the VX560 will have a touchscreen, but that’s not for sure. While it’s doubtful Onda will ever officially release the VX560 stateside, you’ll probably be able to find it from online importers in the not-too-distant future.

While I was buzzing about over on the FCC website today, I came across this mysterious new device from France’s Thomson and Technicolor called the PoMMeS. The funny thing is that the word “pomme” is the French word for “apple”, so in a way, you are looking at the first pics of an apple tablet.

The gadget is a wireless multimedia playback device, and according to the PoMMeS user manual, it’s designed to proved access to TV programs, VOIP video calling, as well as web browsing and other online services. The 8-inch, 800 x 480 LCD touchscreen includes a stylus, so I’m not sure if you can use your fingertips to control it or not. And if you look closely at the photo above, you’ll notice there’s a front-mounted pair of speakers, a web cam, and a D-Pad for controlling menus.

On the side of the tablet is a jog wheel, and on the back, there’s a USB connector, as well as headphone and microphone jacks. The device appears to be manufactured by China’s PCCW, and under the hood is a Texas Instruments DaVinci video system-on-a-chip and a Xilinx logic chip if that gives you any clue as to its capabilities.

If you squint really hard at the RF testing photo below, you can see the PoMMeS turned on and doing something.

While I’m not sure exactly what sort of media it’ll play, and the preliminary manual offers these setup instructions: “Before using the PoMMeS multi-media device, you need to set up the proper operation conditions. Please consult your service center hotline for network setup procedure.” Thanks for the clarification.

I’m assuming that the PoMMeS is designed for streaming IPTV services, but that’s about all I can figure out at this point. If anyone knows more about the PoMMeS, feel free to comment below.

HP’s new DreamScreen devices straddle the fine line between computer and digital picture frame. Like other digi-frames, you can view pictures without a computer. But with the DreamScreen, you can also wirelessly stream music, videos and photos from your PC or the Internet.

Each DreamScreen features a bright, high-resolution LCD color screen, and has built in speakers so it’s a completely self-contained media playback device. And if you don’t want to bother streaming media from your PC, the DreamScreen has a built in 6-in-2 media card reader and a pair of USB ports too. Video formats supported include MPEG 1, 2, 4 and H.264, while you can listen to audio in MP3, AAC, WMA and WAV formats.

In addition to media playback, you can access Facebook and view updates without getting up from your chair. There’s also a slideshow integration with Snapfish, so you can upload photos to their site and view them on the DreamScreen. HP has also been kind enough to provide access to streaming digital music via Pandora, and HP’s own “SmartRadio” which aggregates Internet radio from around the globe. There’s also a built in calendar and alarm clock, so you might want one of these on your bedside table instead of a traditional alarm. There’s no word on future plans to roll out additional Internet services, but I’m hopeful HP will release more integrations in future.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The only major downside I can see to the DreamScreen is that it’s crying out for a touchscreen surface. For now, you have to navigate using the buttons along the sides of the screen, or using the included wireless remote. Hopefully, HP will make a touch-enabled version in the future. I also wish there were an open standard for widgets like there is with the Chumby.

The DreamScreen 100 features a 13.3″ display, while the DreamScreen 130 has a 10.2″ screen. Both devices have 800×480 screen resolution, so the smaller display just has smaller pixels. The DreamScreen 100 lists for $249.99 (USD) and the DreamScreen 130 is $299.99, but you can find both models over at Amazon for a few dollars less.

While other replicas only look awesome or have loopy sound effects, Ameralis Grafx‘ Tricorder PMP-09 is not only a replica of the famous Star Trek tricorder, it also serves as a portable media player.

It’s equipped with a 2.8″ TFT colored screen, 8 GB of memory, and a battery that can play 4 hours of video or 12 hours of music before needing to be recharged. The PMP-09 handles AVI, MP4, MP3, WAV, JPG and BMP files. Too bad it doesn’t have a browser. If you could access Google and Wikipedia on this thing you’d practically have half of the functionality of the fictional tricorders.

The media player also comes in 6 different variants, each with their own version of the LCARS interface, also seen in Star Trek. That’s the Starfleet model in the picture above, and below are the Medical, Borg and Marine models. Wait. The Borg had tricorders?

In addition to the stock LCARS interface in each gadget, users can download 12 more interfaces. Here’s the PMP-09 in action; ironically its media playing capabilities are not demoed in the video so it ends up looking like, well, like a replica:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Useless replicas are already pricey, so it’s natural to expect that a useful one would be expensive as well. The Tricorder PMP-09′s starting prices are $350 (USD), $400 and $430, depending on the model. Check out Ameralis Grafx’ website for more details.

The Quantum CVFD-M46 crams in all the features you’d expect in a multimedia mobile phone, and it sells for under $100, fully unlocked.

The Quantum offers a 3-inch touchscreen display, and is loaded up with a variety of mobile applications, including a calculator, contact manager, clock, FM radio, games, MP4 video player and voice recorder among other things. The quad-band phone works on all GSM networks worldwide, and has dual SIM slots so you can switch between two mobile accounts with the flip of a switch. The phone also supports Bluetooth connectivity, including A2DP and AVRCP so you can play music or even operate remote-controlled devices over Bluetooth.

There’s also a built-in video/still video camera, but it maxes out at a paltry 640×480 resolution. And just like the iPhone that it so desperately wishes it were, it even has a motion sensor which detects when you switch from landscape to portrait modes. And unlike the iPhone, it already has MMS support out of the box. Did I happen to mention that it has a built-in TV too? Too bad it’s analog, so it probably doesn’t receive anything in the US now that analog broadcasts are done. For those of you in other countries where analog TV still works, you can tell us how well it works.

This nifty little media player claims it can play just about any video format you can throw at it. The Mvix Ultio 1080p Media Center not only can play a ton of codecs, but can stream video from many web-based video services as well.

The compact box can play full high-def (1920 x 1080) files in popular formats such as MP4, H.264, DivX HD, MOV, VC-1, FLV, VOB, WMV and AVI as well as less common formats like MKV, AVC-HD, RMVB and Minus VR. Of course, it can also play a variety of audio formats like AAC, WMA, OGG, MP3, and M4A with aplomb. There’s even support for subtitle formats including Advance Substation Alpha – which has the best file extension ever – .ASS . (There’s a full list of supported formats and codecs here).

In addition, the Ultio can connect to the Internet via a built-in Ethernet port or through a Wi-Fi network (if you plug in an optional USB networking dongle). Once connected, you can download media files using the system’s built-in BitTorrent client. Since it has an integrated Samba server and UPnP, you can use services like PlayOn or Tversity to stream video from Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and other web-based video services.

The Ultio has a nice array of video outputs, including HDMI 1.3, component video, optical audio, analog audio (yuck) and composite video (double yuck).

Keep in mind that the Ultio doesn’t come with any built-in storage. For best performance, you’ll need to drop in a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive (up to 1.5 TB). Otherwise, you can play files from a USB 2.0 hard drive or a flash drive. You can also stream media stored on your PC if you’d rather store files there. And the guys over at Mvix are even encouraging users to download all of the system’s open source and GPL sourcecode to see what else they can do with this little box.

You can find the Mvix Ultio over at ThinkGeek for just $169.99 (USD). The 802.11N Wi-fi dongle will set you back another $39.99. BYO hard drive.

Forget rumors and *gasp* blogs: if you want to get your hands on legit cutting-edge gadget news, the FCC is the place to be. Take these diagrams, taken from the FCC’s website, of what are supposed to be Creative’s contender for the touchscreen-crazy PMP market, the Zii. That by the way is an extremely awkward name for a device. Not what you’d expect from a company named “Creative”.

As you can see, Creative may be planning on trumping the Walkman X , the iPod touch and all other PMPs by including an HD camera in their device. Engadget‘s Thomas Ricker also reckons that the “developer edition” Zii EGG (seriously, wtf is up with these names) means that Creative is intent on going Apple’s route, e.g. apps, making the Zii more than just a media player, just like the iPod Touch. Hopefully the price won’t be as ridiculous as the gadget’s name.

Shortly after hearing about HP’s Photosmart Premium with Web Touch, the world’s first printer to have its own apps, we now have Vizio announcing that their high end XVT (Extreme Vizio Technology, if you were wondering) line of LCD HDTVs will have their own internet apps as well. Yes, this is what HDTVs are for: Twitter and Facebook in 1080p. The internet-ready XVT line can connect via Ethernet or WiFi (802.11n dual-band), and will come with “a customized Bluetooth universal remote control with sliding QWERTY keyboard for easy thumb-typing.” Sweet.

Vizio has already confirmed the support of several content and service providers aside from Facebook and Twitter, such as eBay, Flickr, Netflix and Vudu. Currently, the only XVT series on sale is the 55″ VF550XVT LCD HDTV. You can order one at Amazon for $1899 (USD), or at Vizio’s online store for $2000.

The 42″ SV421XVT and 47″ SV471XVT HDTVs will be available in July for $1,200 and $1,500 respectively. If you were hoping for relatively cheaper XVTs, you’re in luck: The 32″ SV320XVT will be available in September, featuring a thin profile and full 1080p goodness for “only” $750. The 37″ SV370XVT ($850) will also be on sale in September, along with the LED-backlit 55″ VF551XVT ($2,200). Check out Vizio’s press release for more info as well as the complete roster of XVT series. Whew. Typing is exhausting.

This handy gadget adds a complete digital sound system on the handlebars of your bicycle.

The Lavod Bikeman LFB-615 clips onto a sturdy mount on your bike, and lets you play your favorite digital tunes through its built in amp and directional speaker. Designed specifically for bike riders, the tubular sound system directs music right at your ears, and does away with the dangers of wearing headphones when biking.

The media player can play MP3 and WMA format files, and has 2GB of on-board storage for your tracks. The speaker is rated at 2.3 watts, and runs on a high-capacity lithium-ion battery pack that lets you listen to up to 10 hours of music on a single charge. And when you need to juice back up, just connect it to your computer’s USB port or the included charger.

In addition to playing music, the durable water-resistant aluminum music player doubles as a flashlight – just in case you need to see where you’re going in the dark. A bright 1-watt white LED should provide plenty of illumination.

You can find the Bikeman MP3 Bike Speaker over at Lavod for $139 (USD).

Digital Trends have reviewed Panasonic’s DMP-B15, The world’s first portable Blu-ray player. So is it worth the $800 USD price tag? Well, the player does get a 7 (out of 10 I guess), but after reading the review my short answer has to be NO.

I’m not saying that Digital Trends’ review was biased or anything. From a technical standpoint, the DMP-B15 deserves a 7 because it’s so versatile. You can connect it via HDMI cable to an HDTV and use it as a conventional Blu-ray player. It also has VIERA CAST functionality, Panasonic’s web video service that allows access to sites like YouTube and Amazon’s Video-on-Demand, as well as for downloading firmware updates or BD-Live content. The DMP-B15 also has an SD card slot and an AV input, so it’s still useful even if you don’t have a Blu-ray disc on hand.

Unfortunately, nearly all of those functions are hampered in one way or another. First of all, the 8.9-inch, 1024 x 600 screen kind of defeats the purpose of Blu-ray media because it can’t really handle HD content. Second, the DMP-B15 can only go online via… Ethernet *groan*. No Wi-Fi. Third – and I’m not sure about this but still – Digital Trends only mentioned support for MPEG-2 and AVHCD playback from SD cards. Fourth, the battery’s only good for 3 hours.

So what would make you spend $800 dollars for this jack-of-all-trades? I guess the only reason is just so you can say that you have the world’s first portable Blu-ray player. Actually I don’t even believe that claim, because we already have portable Blu-ray players: Blu-ray capable laptops. And wouldn’t you know it, at least one of those laptops sells for just $700 USD! Yes, something that’s way way way more versatile, has WiFi, and can play all kinds of shit costs $100 less than the DMP-B15.

But hey, it’s your money. You can get the DMP-B15 at Amazon. Or not.

I’m pretty sure that the guys at Ozaki love Brando. My proof? Ozaki’s iMini Pet. Like most of Brando’s gadgets, it’s a mish mash of functionality – in this case an iPod dock, a radio and an alarm clock – with a touch of weird – a stuffed pet that can “dance” as music is being played. They nailed it.

Look at that demented frog’s face. He’s called Rap Frog by the way. There are four other pets available – House Dog, Jazz Panda, Classical Bear (who is pink), and Rock Lion. If Brando made this they’d have clams and anglerfish and centipedes as well.

The iMini Pet is equipped with a pair of 3-watt amps and also a pair of 4-watt drivers. As you can see it also has a backlit 64 mm LCD screen. The digital alarm clock also has a snooze feature as well as auto sleep. The FM radio has auto scan and can save up to 6 preset stations, while the dock can charge an iPod and play music at the same time. And the pets can move their mouth, hands and head. Except for Jazz Panda, who for some reason can’t move his head. I’m not kidding. Look at the spec sheet if you don’t believe me.

There’s a video of the iMini Pets moving awkwardly and mouthing along to the tune of Don’t Worry Be Happy, and I guess they’ve got that Sesame Street vibe goin’ on. I don’t know if it’s just me but the video is freakin tiny. Another touch of weirdness I guess?

Jeremy Horwitz of iLounge says that the iMini Pets will sell for $99 USD, but he didn’t say when or where will they be available.

Verdict: Cute. Until you make it dance to Lamb of God or Children of Bodom, that is.

He/She took an iPod mini – a relic from 2004-05 – and gave it a suit of blocky plastic armor, the iconic NES controller from the Golden Age, the ancient Pre-Playstation eras. Okay 1983.

The casemod is a bit “simple”, and by that I mean the iPod mini was just placed inside the controller. I know that’s not really as simple as it sounds, but it would have been nicer if the controller’s buttons were wired to control the iPod. Just saying.

As you can see the screen and scroll wheel face the back of the controller, so as to preserve the buttons in front. So from afar it’s going to seem like recycledgamer just plugged in a pair of earphones into a NES controller.
